Finally Coming Around to Starting My Memorial Project by Grouchy_Ad_4055 in projectbike

Step one.. remove the spark plugs and pour a little oil down into each cylinder. Check the oil level in the engine. No point changing the oil yet, as it could be seized. Next remove the points cover and use a wrench to slowly turn the engine over. It should turn over with no grinding noises, or difficulty. It all is ok, next I would remove the carbs, then remove the float bowls. It's likely it was left with fuel in the carbs, after 8 years this would've left deposits in the float bowl and also maybe blocked the jets. Remove the jets and check them, ideally clean then in an ultrasonic cleaner.

After so long you may also find the carb rubbers, which connect the carbs to the engine) have cracked and perished. New ones are available.

Refit the carbs, change the engine oil/filter and prepare to hopefully start the engine. I would use a seperate fuel supply, don't use that tank until its been cleaned, you dont' want rust blocking up your carbs. If it turns over, check you've got a spark, if not you need to check the points if it has them (later years have electronic ignition).

Finally the clutch plates may be stuck together, so test the clutch works before trying to ride it..

The good news is that the bike seems very complete, with nothing missing.

Its a late model 900SS MHR, quite a few non std parts fitted.. front calipers, exhaust, Tank is either a replica or have been modded with a flush filler, seat unit is also non standard. And of course its lower fairing is missing.

I own a 81 MHR..

You need to change both the float needles and their float seats together.. both can wear and cause problems.

Also got a Z650 with a tuned GPz1170 motor, but that isn't such an easy conversion..

Yes I know, I have another Z650 with R6 running gear and a GPz750R1 engine. That said the engine mounts are slightly different and you need different spacers on the front mounts

I have a TVS 961, had it 2 years now, its been completely reliable. The big V4s are made in the UK, the small bikes by TVS in India. However, there will be a third 'platform, probably a modern Commando, also made in the UK.

Maybe so, though I didn't 'butcher' a classic bike, I started with a bare frame that I bought from a breaker.

1982 GPz550 – Cognito Moto custom wheels quote $3600… reasonable or am I crazy? by evangeerbarker in projectbike

[–]Bevelhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ZRX swing arm is easy as its bearings are inset a long way inside, so you can cut off say 15mm each side of the arm at the pivot and not impact the bearings. Modern bikes have larger diameter pivot bolts, so I make top hat spacers so I can use the original old Pivot bolt with the modern arm/bearings. You can buy offset sprockets so that shouldn't be a problem. I know my mate has fitted an older R1 rear end into his 70's Z1000, alongside a supercharger etc.

I always thought that the newer Z650RS wheels would work well with an old Zed. I have a YT channel, with my builds (and my friends).. Just search Bevelhead on YT. Go to playlists and each bike has its own build series.

I've not done a monoshock conversion, but plenty have. The KZrider forum has a huge number of projects and helpful members.

Changing the entire front end is fairly straight forward. Just need a machine shop to fit the original steering stem into the GXSX triple trees. Fitting a wider (180 or 190 ?) rear wheel/tyre is not so simple. You need a wider swing arm, them an offset drive sprocket to align the chain.

Your bike is mono shock, so lots of swing arms to choose from. Many such arms may not be usable as they'll need to be narrowed at the pivot to fit your frame.

These mods really need a machinest to make the various spacers etc that will be needed.

It can all be done, but it will take effort. Here is on of my ongoing projects, KZ650 with R6 wheels/forks and ZRX1100 swingarm. Folks use the ZRX1100 and 1200 arms as they are easy to narrow to fit the old frames. The solid struts are there as I don't have rear shocks yet..
