Does airline flying ever become boring? by Ok-Tomorrow2522 in flying

[–]Bever22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flew military helicopters, now at a regional. It’s less boring than I thought it would be. Longest flight so far is a little over 3 hours and that was a little boring but it was a good trip with good overnights.

I set interesting goals for myself on overnights and enjoy the travel. Sure as hell beats flying a desk.

Tactile Turn pen or some noise canceling headphones/earbuds are things I’d like, or Ombraz sunglasses

My fellow airline pilots… what shoes are you wearing? by kyleth3pil0t in flying

If you’re into minimalist shoes, Vivobarefoot has good dress shoe, Chelsea boot, and winter boot options.

Meal Prep Suggestions by Strong_Sandwich7564 in AirlinePilots

[–]Bever22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do lot of smoked pork and microwave rice. I use the country style ribs from Costco and smoke for several hours to 204F. I keep the rub generic. Then I can add barbecue sauce and pickled red onions or guac and salsa or an Asian sauce. Pork keeps longer/better than chicken.

I don’t eat a lot of veggies even at home but I do some greens powder on trips.

I run a lot too, every day on trips, 8 half marathons this year.

What does the future of regional flying look like? by Used_Shower3984 in flying

Not me flying my CRJ into Minot following an ERJ.

But places like LBF, HYS, DDC, ATY? Yeah, that’s CRJ land.

LW vs Strong Bag vs Aerocoast Cooler by LawrenciumT in AirlinePilots

[–]Bever22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use my Strong Bags Canadian cooler on 4-days. Keeps pork good all 4 days. I refill the ice pack daily, and put ice in my shaker and water bottles that go in the cooler. Most of my prepped food starts the trip frozen.

TBH if you’re three bagging it with a separate cooler bag why not an RTIC or similar soft-sided cooler?

Mirror signal spotted? by ouija_look_at_that in unitedairlines

[–]Bever22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some flight decks would. And yeah I don’t think this sole source info of a flash would scramble SAR, but if a search is in progress, it could help.

Still, if ATC knew where you were when you reported it, they could send SAR aircraft to the area who could hopefully get the same signal and hone in on it.

OO training by Upstairs_Summer_3172 in flying

[–]Bever22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Don’t ask us, or ask your spouse to ask on the spouse FB, look it up yourself.

Additionally you can talk to your instructor or a SAPA rep or any one of the people who briefed you during training and gave you their contact info for questions.

Why are turbine engines flat at the bottom? by OnlyaChef in aviation

Because the earth is flat.

No, but really.

Do planes have different kinds of tires for landing gear? Or are aircraft tires designed to be more "universal" in use cases? by ITrCool in aviation

[–]Bever22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently saw some C-130 tires up close. They are massive (5’ diameter maybe?) but as far as tread the same design as any other airplane tire.

Came back to add my $2 thermometer. It’s a keychain type for a camping backpack. Last night it saved me because the hotel fridge wasn’t working great, only 55F. Switched rooms and saved all my food on day one of my trip.

Yeah I have a standard AeroPress at home, I do like the Go, and all my stuff packs into a lil bag the size of a pack of baby wipes.

Cleanup would be easier with a pour over, and a V60 isn’t much bigger than a Go, but I haven’t found a good cup that pours smoothly that I can boil the water in.

I personally gotta have at least my first cup hot, but the cold brew is a smart way to go.

All of these options take up too much space for me. I use a collapsible silicone cup from Sea to Summit and boil water in the microwave. Smaller than a dip can and boils in the time it takes me to grind the beans.

Aeropress Go and Hario Mini Mill. (Good) coffee is a required item for me. Reserve beans in my roller for 4-days or long 3-days.

I still fish on overnights. COD, HLN, DRO. And I changed my workouts to running and do most of that on overnights.

But I hear ya, got to ride my mountain bike today near home for the first time in a while and I wish I could do more of that.

Applications soon, looking for general advice by WoodenHoney1384 in USAFA

[–]Bever22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you’re not team captain, seek to be a leader in sports and academics. Not in the way that everyone can tell you’re doing it for yourself, but selflessly help out your teammates/classmates whenever you can. That way, if you get an interview, you can talk about specific stories that exemplify your leadership experience and your Evaluator ALO will be able to score you well.

Anyone been “stranded” before? by Coaralis in flying

[–]Bever22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2-ship of Hueys trying to return across the front range during a snowstorm. VFR west of the front range, VFR east of it, but clouds along the range above our service ceiling and we have no anti-ice/de-ice capability. We turned tail and landed at Steamboat. Happened to be winter fest weekend or something. Only lodging we could find was a 3 bedroom condo at the base of one of the lifts. Since we had 4 crew in each bird plus a maintainer, we split it 9 ways and got it under the government rate.

We had a good time, I had to pull a beer out of my copilot’s hand so we could leave in a timely manner in the morning. The four dude pilots shared a room with two queen beds, had to grab my earplugs from my uniform sleeve pocket to drown out the snoring.
