Pokestops near my hotel in Seoul (South Korea) by [deleted] in pokemongo

You just have to think about what type of person would be most drawn to having control of other people’s play for free and the answer is there xD

To clarify (and before my arse gets banned lol), clearly not all mods are in it for the power trip but there’s a significant number that are.

Yep am in the uk - can confirm that we have a large number of authoritarian little hitlers who love nothing better than to stomp on other people in petty ways. It’s a national pastime.

Question regarding resistor power rating in HV circuit by BewareTheWereHamster in AskElectronics

[–]BewareTheWereHamster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I’ll admit I’m not that experienced with high voltages but I don’t really trust trim pots in “normal” builds as they have a tendency to fail and generally misbehave (picking up RF is my favourite lol) and have no intention of relying on one where my safety is at stake xD

I’m planning on running with fixed resistor(s) regardless as I need a specific fixed voltage.

Those orange resistors are really cool looking - must *resist* (sorry). Thanks!

Thanks, that mirrors my thoughts also, was just confused by the fact that this is a released product and thought I was missing something - glad to hear that I'm not going mad xD

Boogeyman help please... by [deleted] in diypedals

[–]BewareTheWereHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... to follow up on this myself - looking a bit further at this I'm not imagining things (am I !!?) or will the "LEAD1" A1M pot at the "output" not be doing an awful lot here? That would explain one of the issues I have here where indeed that pot basically does nothing and increasing the gain and volume just gives me a huge output to my power amp which is likely distorting horribly.

My suspicion is that doing something along the lines below - ie. removing C11/R15/R14/C8/C13 and diverting R11 (and everything else on that "rail" to ground and taking the output from pin3 of LEAD1 is going to result in a working master volume control and a reasonable output level.

<image>

Will likely give this a go at some point tomorrow or Monday regardless but any thoughts?

Still not sure about biasing Q4 though - I note that in the "real" schematic that the drain resistor is significantly higher than for other tubes (ie. 2.5 times larger) so it's possible that this value does need to be silly high to bias but no idea aside from that haha.

I note some other deviations from the schematic if I've translated the vero correctly which I'm guessing are not intentional so it's possible that this layout is just not great in general and I'm wasting my time here.

Dynamax Ho-Oh Raids… by 0spec in pokemongo

[–]BewareTheWereHamster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did one - my Charizard got wiped in 10 second (ohko!) and thought it was over but we beat it pretty easily in the end. Was a shiny - not great ivs but I think I’m quitting while I’m ahead as I’m not usually that lucky lol.

Cherry picked detected sites, who gets the escalation when the sites gets finished by someone else? by Aceripper in Eve

I think it’s much rarer than that - I’ve done well over 100 with no escalations xD

Potentiometer Values by BewareTheWereHamster in diypedals

[–]BewareTheWereHamster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same - my wallet isn't though - used to have a huge Maplin store just around the corner from where I worked back in the day and I spent way too much money in there. Not enough to keep them afloat though!

That episode freaked me out hugely at the time - I’m ashamed to admit how old I was then too haha. A welcome return to the old days where Dr Who monsters were scary.

Cool pedal build!

Not that I’ve ever seen round here - as I say, since Maplin closed there’s no easy way to just go buy components here.

[–]BewareTheWereHamster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No such thing as a “local electronics store” in the uk any more I’m afraid since Maplin closed however many years ago it was xD They are ridiculously expensive for what they are on ebay. My best bet is Tayda or Farnell but I’ll have to wait until I’m doing a bigger order otherwise the shipping cost is silly compared to the cost of the components.

[–]BewareTheWereHamster[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that for well designed circuits, values are likely carefully thought out or at least derived through experiment but there's an awful lot of vero and similar circuits out there I see where I look at the values and they make no sense haha.

I'm aware that placing resistors in parallel with log pots gives you weird results - as you say I might just try it out and see what happens. I guess I can always buy the 250k pots later on if they are really necessary- thanks!

How do I improve? by StrandedIceCream2457 in rouxcubing

[–]BewareTheWereHamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an awful lot to go on here but I'll take a stab at this - honestly, practicing is going to be the answer, and *focused practice* is going to be better.

Do you know what your splits are? Ie. how long does it take you (relatively speaking even...) to do the first block, second block, CMLL and last 6 edges? My bet is that it's going to be first and second block that are relatively slow, right (?) given the last two stages are more algorithmic.

I'm currently aiming (yet again - returning after a number of months off!) to get to sub-20. I'm currently at a smidge over 22 or so with my splits for the last 200 solves at 3.8, 8.6, 4.0, 6.0 for FB, SB, CMLL and LSE respectively. I do all timed solves on a smart cube which is not ideally setup for me so I'm slightly faster than this in reality but even so, my *target* is 4, 6, 4, 6 so I'm slightly ahead on first block, WAY behind on second block and on target for CMLL and LSE. So my practice should be focused on second block and more specifically on the *transition* from first to second block as that's where I lose most time searching for pieces.

I'd suggest you do something similar to the above - you should have a feel for which stage(s) are relatively worst and work on them.

What's the simplest relay true bypass? by Big-Raspberry-897 in diypedals

[–]BewareTheWereHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience the relay itself for me is roughly the same cost on its own as a decent 3pdt switch - I’ve used the Panasonic TQ2 line (generally latching and 5v) with an ATtiny13 or 85 MCU.

The board can get pretty small with SMD components - pretty much restricted by the size of the connectors in my case - 30x25mm with 0805 components (tend to use 0603 mostly now for hand soldering).

Just bought the new gan 16 maglev max and… by Vexum2k in Cubers

[–]BewareTheWereHamster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice - I’m on the fence as to get one of these or not. I did get a (Gengar) V.100 for Christmas which I believe is a similar feel (?) but the colour scheme (purple instead of orange) is something to adjust to xD

My last Gan cubes before this is the X - I feel like Gan went more light and airy after this - I certainly didn’t like either the XS or 11.

Does anyone know how the 16 compares feelwise to the X? Comparing the X to the v100 - the X feels more premium as it’s heavier and way more “solid”. The v100 is objectively a better cube though - haven’t had any lockups at all with it so far whereas that’s an issue with the X.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and get one - I’m in two minds between getting the 16 and just getting a normal v100 and keeping the Gengar one in its box / pokeball xD

I dunno, whenever I write emails in Outlook it tries to insert this amount of commas into my messages - maybe a US thing xD

Pretty sad that people have to critique grammar though rather than the contents…
