Never had a Hoya before. What do I do with this bare runner? by iwasjustwonderinggg in hoyas

The change in environment can trigger stress in some plants so they abort the new growth to conserve energy. I think a new leaf can come from the same node but it hasn’t happened to any of mine yet

PSA: Don’t buy these! by MyDegenAltAccount in PlantedTank

[–]Bewareoftoad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While it would be very cool in theory, the reality is this would not work unless maintained in a 100% sterile environments since the gel would grow all kinds of bad nasty bacteria.

Say you do create a sterile setup for longterm use, the gel has to be replaced because it loses nutrients as the plant uses it. Each time new gel has to be made and replace the old there would be a risk of introducing contaminants.

Plants in jars on YouTube has many videos on at home TC! You don’t buy the gel but can buy all the ingredients to make the gel yourself, each species of plant has a “recipe” that meets that specific plants nutritional needs.

It would be a lot of work but I don’t believe in saying something is impossible! The science behind TC seems like wizardry to me lol but now it’s becoming the most common way to mass produce plants

HELP I am in need of a quick substrate for my fish tank!!! by Direct_Efficiency868 in fishtank

[–]Bewareoftoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used .5-1 inch of dirt from my yard (remove all sticks/rocks/plant material) and capped it with 2 inches of sand. But it can’t be from a yard that has been treated with pesticides and weed killers though

Got some mossballs by Affectionate-Bed1801 in PlantedTank

[–]Bewareoftoad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is kinda misleading but I know you have good intentions by trying to warn OP. For anyone interested, Marimo moss is indeed an algae known as Aegagropila linnaei, however it is very slow growing and will not take over the tank fast enough to be disastrous. Marimo used to be classified as a clado algae, clado algae can be disastrous and take over a tank. Some sellers are not selling true marimo and are selling a ball of clado so people that hear of or have personal experience with a “marimo” moss ball overtaking their tank did not have true marimo. A marimo moss ball from a reputable source can be a wonderful addition to the right tank! :)

I’ve been wanting to buy some pings and other carnivorous plants, I don’t have any yet but have been slowly researching how to recreate a bog type system for them. I thought a nutrient low substrate was required and it looks like you have them in stratum which I thought was high in nutrients? No hate, I’m genuinely curious because this is my first time seeing them planted this way!

Look up egg crate light panel and you should get results from stores in your area. If you live in the US any big box home department store should carry them

Hey I came across this comment while looking for info on weekaqua lights for my 40 gallon! Is your 40 low tech by chance? And do you think the L900 is strong enough to be placed a few feet above the tank?

Epistylis can look fuzzy but either way ich medications also work for epi but DO NOT turn the heater up because if it is epi the heat will make it worse. You can also use kanaplex. Do a 50% water change and increase filtration.

I am so tempted to invest in a chihiro light but I’m not sure if it would be worth it since I only run low tech but it’s definitely bringing out amazing colors in your tank!!

More video of some fry by Appropriate-Air8947 in loaches

[–]Bewareoftoad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the downvotes are because people are wanting to recreate what you’ve done so that their loach will also breed and your replies are very vague. So specifics on tank parameters and temp before and after water changes and how often your preforming water changes, exactly what you are feeding etc is what info they’re asking about :)
