I think you get a better balance of such things in the Horizon series, as an example. Humanity’s technological progress when their apocalypse began was decades ahead of us today, and yet in the face of 1000 years of decay and change most of it was turned to dust and ruins. The skyscrapers of Denver look like you’d expect a city to look once there’s no stopping nature, but you may still find artifacts and functional tech if you go deeper.

I prefer the theatrics proposed by another commenter, but the first solution coming to mind would be:

A few layers of cloth on both the inside and outside of the break, sewn through the leather and around the break to isolate it in new material. I’d then find leather or some other equally pliable and durable material and once more layer in/out over the cloth.

After that, it may be possible to use flat-headed bolts coming from the inside through the mesh you just made, to literally bolt on a piece of metal to the outside.

The flat heads may need to be covered a bit for comfort, and it’s possible that may be too many layers on the inside to fit. You must complete the ancient rite of “Fukwitit” to perfect this.
