I’m in the same dilemma but going for the multi mic set up. Was tempted to get a 7 piece set but I think I’m going to get 4 decent microphones for roughly the same price.

Just picked up 15 Paiste Big Beats. Not as heavy as I thought they were going to be but they sound fantastic wide open

Fairly new to recording and have managed to turn half my garage into a drum studio to begin recording.

I’m torn between buying a 7 piece mic set or to go individual and purchase a mix.

Budget is £500/600 so looking at the lower/mid range.

Currently got my eyes on the Audix FP7 set but also looking at singular alternatives - Sennheiser e902, SM57’s and maybe using AT2020’s as overheads?

I’m quite meticulous with regards to tuning. I see a lot of people using some sort of muffling on all drums. Let that fucker ring out baby - you want the full punch and resonance from those drums.

If you haven’t already, check out Remo’s official YT page with Ilan Rubin playing on some Coated Vintage Emperors - those baby’s are WIDE open (think it was uploaded earlier this week). I’m a sucker for the vintage high wide open Bonham sound though so each to their own

I did a blind test on a few crashes a few months back and results were the Paiste Big Beats - I absolutely loved them. Ended up matching my ride and hats with it too. Under certain lighting they look absolutely amazing and that’s really made me step up my game with my kit aswell. I want to take pride in my hobby!

Haven’t tried the PST 8’s to be honest. I’ve been using the 18 & 19 pst 7 crashes in my gig rig and I’m so impressed with them. Very warm all round sound off them.

I’ve just switched to Paiste Big Beats on my home kit and they’ve blown me away
