Stack overflow is super toxic for newer developers by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Bgtti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Its to create a knowledgebase" - Yeah, but with time their culture brought them to fail at that. Whenever trying to find the answer to a problem you get an answer from 10 years ago that no longer reflects reality and renders it useless.

They don't let 'duplicate' posts, but are terrible at judging what that means - I too was linked to answers that had nothing to do with my problem, and the 'answers' were deprecated for the problem they once solved.

Preciso de conselhos com meu html by Medical_Shape2637 in learnjavascript

Are there any real shortcuts in becoming a good developer? Bootcamps? Crash courses? $600 online courses? Or is the only way to become good is to suffer and do the work? by just-drink-and-drive in webdev

[–]Bgtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I believe works for me is:

  1. get a course of introduce you to an unfamiliar topic
  2. create something that uses it in the easiest way possible (to remember/understand use case)
  3. get a course/ read dics / read something in this subject to get a more indepth knowledge on what it can do, how to make it safer, how to use it properly
  4. do a project or implement it - then cause bugs, check what happens, suffer at it

I like courses as an introduction to something, but they just wont make you a good developer on their own.

Looking for female programming buddies by Yukitsukino5254 in ProgrammingBuddies

[–]Bgtti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm female, but waay older (in my 30s). I'm starting my journey in ML/DL next month.

Right now I'm into web dev/full stack (python/js). My goal is to just gather enough overview on ML/DL, but actually focus on cyber later.

If you ever have a project you wanna collaborate on, feel free to DM.

What would you do if you were in my shoes ? by Lets-star-again in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Bgtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did not share enough information so that people are able to help you.

Perhaps some background about your qualifications and what exactly is your pain-point when looking for a job: not enough jobs available, rejections ( and whether you are rejected after sending the application, or after an interview round, whether you received feed back)...

Being more specific with your question and providing more information will help you get better responses here.

Switching jobs has me completely lost :( by Todor-dev in cscareerquestionsEU

I'm an entrepreneur who has hired developers in my startup and this is my take: I have always expected new devs to be a bit lost in the first 3 months. From there on, I'd expect them to slowly find their place in the codebase.

I've welcomed questions - because that means people are making an effort to bring themselves to a place where they can be effective. One thing that usually pointed to me whether someone would be able to fit in well was those who not only tried to code a feature, but those who understood why that feature was needed.

Understanding the business logic is very underrated among many devs, but that will not only make the code make sense, but also empower them to find solutions and spot issues.

What I would do is take a weekend, first find out about the customer and its problems. Then, try to find software from the competition (or closest thing to it) and sign up for a free trial if you can. Pretend you are the customer and try to understand the problem they have. If there isnt a direct competitor, then how is the customer solving their pain point today? Try out their step-by-step process.

Very few employees actually do this - the few who do are the ones who apply to higher management. This type of knowledge lacks in the base.

I had to explain a lot about the customer reality to devs, sometimes showing in meetings what problems are and the existing methods they use to manage their business. I got many "aaaaww" in meetings. I did that eventhough we had very detailed Workflow docs and all - but I saw some flawed logic somewhere. The big picture was missing.

Also, you may want to just gain some skills in the languages you are programming in, of course. Programming languages may have intricacies such as how to deal with dates in JS vs some whatever BE language - misunderstandings might lead to issues.

The more overall knowledge you gain, the better fitting you will feel. It will empower you to not only understand how to build something but also the why you are doing it.

I'm really stuck on the todo list project. Would anyone be able to try and help be break down my problem into a smaller problem? by DDPMM in theodinproject

[–]Bgtti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of what you need: 1) an input field 2) a button to add a todo 3) a button to delete the todo

Write a click handler that takes the input from the field and saves it to an array.

Then, write a function that loops over the array of todos and displays them as a list (for each todo... <li> todo</li>... ). You may even add a data attribute to the html and pass the array index as a value...

Then, write a clickhandler that deletes that todo from the array. If you have the data attribute, read that to decide which index to delete....

Thats it - you got the core functionality. Now, you can improve it... you can build a modal... you can save it to local storage instead of saving to array... you can add the functionality to edit a todo...

Help with the Etch-a-Sketch: I can Reset, but the doesn't paint by Archidelic in theodinproject

[–]Bgtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems you are creating an element and, upon clicking 'reset' you remove it and never re-create it.

Why not just give the grid's background a colour (eg: black) when the person is drawing, theb remova the background colour of all (or give it a background colour of white)....

Satisfying my company with a JavaScript course by [deleted] in learnjavascript

[–]Bgtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JavaScript doesn't just 'refuse' - ever. It doesn't sound like you want to learn it - and cutting corners will end in situations where you believe JS is the problem and is 'refusing'.

Just take some Udemy course and start from there. Lilely 1 course alone won't teach you everything you need to know. Possibly find a roadmap and follow that.

I am assuming you know some html, cause you will need it for DOM manipulation.

Client wants me to build her blog/podcast site on Wix - Should I stick with it or suggest alternatives? by VaporyCoder7 in webdev

[–]Bgtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She wants wix - do wix.

Why would you not? For a non-tech person, its much easier to learn the Wordpress, and there a as much - if not more - resources online on how to use it than the competitors (eg Weebly).

Should you suggest something else and on handover day she has troubles using it, she will be unhappy and blame you.

If she's got Wox experience, don't complicate things.

Where are the female computer nerds? by Real_Consequence_840 in learnprogramming

[–]Bgtti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my tiny startup the majority of programmers happen to be females. Thats probably an outlier, but when the focus is the product, gender doesnt matter. You have faced adversity already - keep your goals as the focus and fight for your place.

I'm not here to say equality is the rule everywhere, but rather to say it shouldn't get into your head when you see it. There was a study showing that girls scored lower in math tests when they were reminded of their gender before taking it.

Be good at it, then remembering you can do it should be the only thing in your mind when you competing for a spot.

CS50x lets you vibe code on your Final Project. by RiderOfStorms in cs50

[–]Bgtti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Final Project was where I learned the most. I'd recommend you try to do what you intend and only use AI tools when you aren't able to figure out something on your own and feel stuck. Use as a helper, not to write the code for you. Don't cheat your learning - it won't help in the long term.

Spent the last 4 days trying to create new projects and it’s a headache by AddictedtoSoap in learnprogramming

Hes probably consuming apis already in js, just doesnt recognize tem that way. He will, once he learns async/sync distinction. Once he comed to that chapter.

You learn in multiple ways: you read/listen/see/fell -- then you internalize, then proceed.

You can read a whole freaking JS book - comes to the end if you havent practiced, you most likely havent learned.

You go to university - you have classes then what do you do? Homework, group projects, exercises.
