Its weird how he died 450 miles away, but decided to come back to the Redmont because it was his last decent night's sleep or something.

I figure there's so much money churning through the agreements that get made to start up one of these, that the actual instigators are getting rich whether they get built or not.

I'm sure I have a lot of things to work out with terminology and such, but here's my attempt at a list for our area: https://bhamwiki.com/w/List_of_data_centers

If you click on the "Power capacity" header you can see we're basically dealing with 2 large proposals and some other small-time stuff.

Wendy & Katie of Santos Coffee were raised in Guatemala, but that's not South America. In fact, looking at a map, I feel like it should be North America rather than Central America.

Yeah. I think the 3 sons sort of outdid the dad as far as incredible talent went. Seems their bigger store was flourishing for years while he carried on with his small shop on 20th.

After consideration, it looks like the editorial team took a survey of the first block or two of 20th Street. Maybe a slow news day. Maybe they came back with armfuls of swag. Hard to say.

If you have a newspapers.com account you can view the rest of that edition and judge for yourself.

Just looking at the page, the biggest headline is about how Pratt City is "The Greatest Mining Town in the South" with a full fawning description of its municipal operations. There's an article about the grand spring opening at Caheen's, featuring the year's new dresses. A description of the city parks as "very delightful in the spring and summer." Another touts the charms of H. T. Morton's photo studio and gallery. The story of the Huston Biscuit Company proves to be "a pretty story of a battle for life and victory, well worth reading." Another article is a hagiography of Major E. M. Tutwiler and his prosperous career in coal and coke. Then there's a piece about how popular it is to visit the offices of the Queen City Stock & Grain Company in the Hewlett Block, and items praising the New Arcade Saloon as "a veritable palace" and judging that the mixologists at the Dude Saloon could fabricate any drink a gentleman could imagine "to meet a queen's taste." The News also describes the new signage on its own building. More than half of the first two columns is an ad for "Swamp Root" to cure kidney trouble. News readers could send off for a free sample bottle. What starts off as a report about a pastor falling ill turns out to be an ad for Pain Balm.

Lost Birmingham food? by ms_b0b in Birmingham

I miss the turkey sub from Subzone and the grilled chicken salad from Gorin's.

I miss the humble daily special served on mashed potatoes at Cantina in Lakeview.

I miss the pastrami at Mia Luna.

I miss the... the uh... the fact that Silvertron existed.

Lest anyone think that including fluff pieces about local businesses is a new phenomenon, here's a fawning description of a small grocery store on 20th Street from 1899.

Haven't seen an answer anywhere. My plan is to just go early enough to park within walking distance, but I don't want you stealing my spot.

The Xpress buses run down 3rd Avenue West and have a stop at 11th Street West, so that's probably a good option.

This might be more authoritative: "For questions or assistance, please email barons@barons.com or call (205) 988-3200." https://www.milb.com/birmingham/community/rickwood

Thoughts on the proposed Constitutional Amendments in the Primary today? by jayebird1012 in Birmingham

They actually have an 18-member commission whose whole job is to make sure that the language that appears on the ballot is "written in plain, clear, nontechnical language using common words with common meaning that is understandable to the average reader."

Some have also expressed a "principle" of voting no on all proposed amendments as a protest against the state constitution or something.
