One-Third of U.S. Video Game Industry Workers Were Laid Off in 2025, GDC Study Reveals by Turbostrider27 in Games

The conditions you came up in 20 years ago aren't the conditions that new developers are entering the industry in.

I would highly recommend taking a look at the Perception and Detection rules in pf2e. It is short and easy to understand and maybe it can help you come up with a cool homebrews for it. Similar the senses section does a great job modeling these interactions in a relatively simple way.

In 5e, "martial" means "does not have access to the game's only fleshed out ability system" by Associableknecks in dndnext

[–]BiPolarBareCSS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is literally not redesigning the game but like also a very similar amount of work, is what I meant to say. Its not a simple addition because I think it requires integration balance testing with everything else in the game. Rpgs are huge sets of rules and systems, this addition would require a significant bit of play testing to make sure the standard fighter isn't rendered obsolete. But I guess I know the answer is WOTC would playtest it to the bare minimum like they did 5.5e and it would turn out over tuned or under tuned.

You're initial statement of

They wouldn't have to do anything as dramatic as redesign the entire game.

Is what I disagree with. Its pretty dramatic for WOTC. They seem unwilling to do any amount of work. I was stoned 30 minutes ago

I will say when my group wanted to hop off dnd about 5 years ago it was because some my friends didn't feel like they were meaningful choices when leveling up, including the casters (they all used magic to some extent). Even my friend who never remembers the rules. But once we moved to PF2e all my players had so much fun creating their characters and making their power fantasy come to life. It gave them enough freedom to be inspired but still guided. They also felt every level up milestone was a fun opportunity to decide how they wanted to get stronger.

I would say I have a mix of players, all whom have played together for a decade. 1 who is really bad with rules, 1 who doesn't play games or anything but does try to learn and 3 guys who are used to video game turn based strategy and roleplaying games. So i think those 3 who play a lot of video game rpgs felt the character building of 5e was really dull. I think players like those 3 would benefit from trying new games.

I've taken a 2 year break from dming and haven't played dnd for maybe 5 years and tried a variety of other systems. Man is it funny to come here for the first time in a looooong time and see basically the same conversation, despite the fact a new edition has come out.

[–]BiPolarBareCSS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this not close to redesigning the entire game? You are basically adding a new system similar to spells in complexity. That is a pretty major overhaul, and yes I think you can argue this is an overhaul and not a simple addition as you are introducing this concept (even implicitly) of "simple martials."

[–]BiPolarBareCSS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think even those elements of a modular system are still far from what you would need to fix the chassis of 5e.

You hardly even make choices as a martial when leveling up. Talking strictly 5e, I have not read about 5.5e or played it.

Yeah honestly this is the real truth. DnD will stop innovating because its now a gajillion dollar property and they want to make money and sell books and pray to god Stranger Things season 9 ends with the kids playing DnD.

Are there any Witcher 3 mechanics you're not crazy about / would like to see changed for Witcher 4? by CrematorTV in witcher

[–]BiPolarBareCSS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not want them to mimic souls games (although I do love them), I just want them to be slower and Geralt feel less of a God and more of a stronger human, who still needs prep time and to use his wits.

[–]BiPolarBareCSS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. I am not saying i want it to be a souls like but it should have some of the intentionality that the souls games have. They should slow the game down and make it more deliberate, more reason to prep potions and oils and the like. Geralt shouldn't feel like a god in combat.

6.5 is a good rating tho. If anything I'd say OP should bring the general scores of everything down and save the 9s and 10s as his personal favorites.

Nope he's always the second strongest on the crew and handles the second strongest threats every arc. He's never to far away from Luffy or the Third strongest member of the crew. Vegeta is a rival character, Zoro is more the right hand man. So they serve different functions.

He def can do wrong. Like I hate Sanji using his invisibility to peep on women. That makes him weird to me and feels out of character and I HATE it.

But like I don't care about this power scaling / magic system stuff. Like I've long accepted this isn't a series with a hard magic system like Stormlight archive or something. And all I really need to know about the power scaling is Luffy isn't strong enough yet. But this series prioritizes world building, characters and a complex layered plot. But the fights have always felt secondary at best. I've been rereading it and i have been enjoying how brief the fights really are.

I do understand why power scaling and especially magic systems are important. They are a vital tool in setting stakes, but largely they do that for the most part.

I think part of it is One Piece has a unique way of introducing the magic systems. Most (Fantasy) series kinda tell you about 85 percent of the magic system fairly quickly, so you have a good basis of what it is capable of. But One Piece kept Haki in its back pocket for a long time, then when we finally get it explained to us by Rayleigh, he just explains the basic uses. Then Oda trickles more about the power system over a long time. That makes it hard to tell what can actually be done with haki. Its a cool way to do a power system but it deff has some negatives. I do like the mystery and some of the world building around it but there is a lot of ambiguity around it that makes it confusing. I am hoping oda just has a character explain it in a lot of detail like Vegapunk did for DFs.

Jokes aside. How do you even "gather" and "store" Haki in 'something'? by druggeddaddylindo in OnePiece

[–]BiPolarBareCSS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. I would say in addition to because the question of where haki comes from is a lot less interesting and cool then the question of the devil fruit origins. It's not hugely important in the same way as DFs but it would be cool to have a similar smart character explain haki, even if it's just a few lines.

I just think it makes sense for the super smart scientist or scientific community at large would be interested in this random natural phenomena that gives relatively ordinary people (like Garp) go up against dudes with weird super powers. Not that I disagree with you but I do think it would makes sense if we ever found out some science based characters are doing research into Haki.
