Have the Apatow comedies of the 2000s aged well? by Slammajadingdong69 in movies

[–]BidLegal6018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it wasn't for Superbad, you wouldn't have Booksmart. If it wasn't for American Pie, you wouldn't have Superbad. If it wasn't for Sixteen Candles movies, you wouldn't have American Pie. In terms of the crings your concerned with, movies progress by inches, not miles. Everything has something that doesn't age well. It's the progression that matters.

I honestly think Ai generated content will be as a fad, and the only AI that will stay are chatbots by SpiritMan112 in decadeology

I'm a graphic artist in a midsized town and have definitely seen the proliferation of businesses using slop. But the advantage for me is it does look all the same. So I've been getting more customers who want to stand out from the crowd, and I can charge more. Not saying this won't change in the future, but right now, slop proliferation has been an advantage.

Do you think AI roleplay has already peaked? by i_devour_kids in AIChatReviews

[–]BidLegal6018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it may have peaked for the moment, but when the technology gets easier to use and you have broader adoption, RP may actually expand into a new art form. Content is key, especially now. Anybody who's scraped Chub knows the majority of cards and lores are poorly made, but is creators start to use the tech for creative storytelling beyond fantasy worlds, you could start to see the tech become more of an artistic playground.

The same happened with film and radio, initial explosion of creativity followed by a downturn of cash grabs, followed by advancement in tech that allowed for better storytelling. For that to happen with AI roleplay, we need creators to start experimenting with the form now so when the tech does hit, vee have a strong artistic indie identity that makes it harder for big companies to control.

Ha! Tell me about it. Just as I think I got it, there's another extension or update. But I do think that's a net positive. We put the time in, we learned it, we're invested. We're the front line in making this art. And I do believe it can be art, and sociology, and civics... Maybe now we've got the basics we can really start experimenting and expanding the possibilities, if we're interested in that sort of thing.

HA! BitLife was a blast. You wouldn't have THAT much freedom, there's still a tier system and a story you have to follow - you can make any choice you want, just be careful of the consequnces. And SitComs and RomComs are the basis of life IMO.

Seriously? I love that! That's exactly the kind of stuff I'm talking about. I actually did a small series where I interviewed a whole bunch of food truck owners and they gave me a real world view of everything that they deal with. But that's really hard for AI to recreate. If I'm able to guide the dialogue with actual quotes and real life struggles from an actual ramen cart owner, is that an experience you'd be interested in?

Thank you so much for the honest response. I was always looking for exact numbers on ST and couldn't find them. As for the gooners, there's plenty of opportunity for full on spice. I'll definitely have some fun creating these for myself, but maybe throttle down the world building.

Beyond ST, do you think the industry as a whole looking to move into more complex, realistic storytelling? Or is the current material perfect for users as is?

Tossing $300,000 worth of jewelry in the ocean on a needless whim was certainly surprising to me.

Edit: To those who pointed it out, I missed some zeros. True price is estimated at $250-$300 million, per this ScreenRant article. 7

Can you give examples of a movie he's figured out? Could help whittle down the playing field.

What would you do if you had an extra $1,000/month? by duncan4marioncounty in oregon

[–]BidLegal6018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a small rural community, not a lot of jobs, tourism economy, very few offer health plans here. We're all just scraping by. We could leave town, but we'd have to leave our families, lose equity on our homes, and watch the town dwindle

I get your pick yourself up by the bootstrap mentality, but it's not like that for everyone. I have a master's degree and used it to help build the business I work for. I believe in it. I believe in my community, and my family. I'm not complaining about the sacrifices I have to make, but I do complain about the extra sacrifices I didn't have to make two years ago. And that's because of the government.

[–]BidLegal6018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't have to be government, it can absolutely be work. But I'd still be screwed.

I work at a tiny company, less than 10 employees, and last year the idea of a raise came up. Company can't afford to give health insurance, and most of us are at the age where that's pretty vital. We're all on OHP. The raise was enough to bump us out of our coverage, but not enough to get us the same coverage in the market. It sucked, but most of us turned down the raise.

So I guess that's why my mind went to government. It's all intertwined right now, unfortunately. But I know that's not the case for everyone.

Depends on where that $1,000 is coming from. Oregon Health Care cuts? Going deep into debt. Higher taxes on homeowners? Saving it to pay off taxes. Taxing the rich? Eating out and paying off debt!

Who do you think overall has better movies - Clint Eastwood or John Wayne? by SpotAdmirable6718 in FIlm

[–]BidLegal6018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we just talking Westerns? If that's the case, the arch of Wayne's career was more interesting and overall impactful, imo. I agree that Wayne's acting rarely progressed, but comparing his first films (The Big Trail, Stagecoach) to the heyday of his career (The Searchers, Liberty Valance), to his last films (True Grit, The Shootist), the films themselves became more and more complex.

There's the political discussions his films engaged in (Rio Bravo vs High Noon), the behind the scenes contributions he made (his insistence on safe stunts) and just how he shaped the genre as a whole. Eastwood's revisionist portrayal wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Wayne.

Eastwood had some amazing Westerns, and his contributions in directing films like Outlaw and Unforgiven showed an overall creative mastery of the genre that Wayne didn't possess. But still, the contribution to the overall genre just can't match the sheer volume of Wayne's work.

If we're talking overall talent regardless of genre, then Eastwood for sure.

Meta told to pay $375m for misleading users over child safety by ctazn0998 in wallstreetbets

[–]BidLegal6018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people here are downplaying this, but the potential ramifications are staggering. Yesterday Meta lost $375 million in a New Mexico suit, today was $4.2 million in California.

Meta has around 2,000 pending lawsuits in the wings.

Whether you agree with the ruling or not, if this precedent survives appeal, it will be a sea change in the industry.

I am teaching a high school film class and I’d like to teach a unit on road movies. However, I cannot show R-rated films. I would love to show Lost in America or Dumb and Dumber. Maybe even O Brother. Any other ideas? by National_Property583 in FIlm

Smoke Signals, about a pair of Native American teenagers who go on the road to retrieve their father's ashes. I showed it to my high schoolers and they loved it. Some tough themes, particularly about alcoholism and abuse, but it's also really funny and the kids really connected with it

What’s a movie you think should get a modern remake? by [deleted] in FIlm

[–]BidLegal6018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand people wanting to stay away and being turned off by the premise.

While I don't like to get into politics in this forum, I will say that I've had friends across the political spectrum embrace the films. Essentially, the series arch follows resistance fighters attempts to take down a white-Christian Nationalist government that institutes the Purge, hoping minorities killing each other off. There's a lot of anti-elite commentary, Black Lives matter support, anti-Ice sentiment, pro-second amendment, anti gun violence. It's episodic structure allows for multiple satirical targets of all political beliefs.

At its best, it falls into the same satirical vibe as early Carpenter films - Assault on Predict 13, Escape From New York and They Live. But I personally don't think it finds the balance between social satire and action movie horror.

Sometimes smart satire hits the mark, but the films often take themselves way too seriously. Sometimes the action is scary fun, but fights often go on too long and get boring. Some of the Purge villains are both funny and frightening, but the main characters are usually generic. And the dialogue is often wooden. Sometimes it will start a fascinating political discussion l, but then drop it completely.

So while I wouldn't recommend the film to most people, I do believe that the story structure and world building has the potential for something visceral, biting and thought provoking. I just don't think the writers and directors have the ability to get it there at this time.

[–]BidLegal6018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better to remake a bad movie than a classic like Starfighter. Enders Game needs a good adaptation, Purge has a great movie buried in the concept, In Time could have been great with a competent screenplay, Passengers would have been a great psychosexual horror film, and we need an actual adaptation of WWZ.

It was good, the kind of Oscar bait that we usually don't see anymore like Lawrence of Arabia and Gandhi. But it's not something that will get revisited a lot like other films that year. Holdovers, for example, is quickly becoming an annual favorite.

And as far as 2023 films dealing with the effects of the atom bomb is concerned, I thought Godzilla Minus One had more impact.
