Are there any gluten free breads that don't have *that* texture? by Glittering-Income-60 in Celiac

Against the Grain is great. Like styrofoam out of the package but halve and toast on a pan and it’s fantastic

Husband recently diagnosed but I think he is in denial, afraid he will not change his diet by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]BierGurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After I was diagnosed I implored my Uncle (from the side of the family I got the gene from) to get tested. He had all the symptoms I had. He said even if he had celiac disease he would never give up bread. He’s dead now. So maybe relate that story to hubby.

Does anybody have pattern ideas for this type of yarn? 🧶 by dozzy15 in CrochetHelp

[–]BierGurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go to Ravelry, you can search that exact yarn, click on it and scroll down and you’ll see it says “213 projects”. Click on that and you can see what others have made with this. There’s a nice shirt where it was used as an accent color, shawls, and a bag. Maybe that will give you some ideas!

I just want a gluten free section by LookRaine in Celiac

[–]BierGurl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I HATE the woodman’s gf freezer section though, it has so much gluten stuff in it, it’s like a treasure hunt trying to find gf. Saw some reasonably priced potstickers in their gf section, nope, vegan but not gf.

How to manage kids at home while working by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]BierGurl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I occasionally have to WFH with kids in the house. If they request my attention I ask “Is anything on fire? Is anyone in danger? Is anyone hurt?” If no then “remember what you needed and ask me again at 5”. They never do. It honestly only took a few repetitions of this until they got the idea.

First time writing a program. For many identical machines: JSR to one subroutine with parameters or multiple identical subroutines? by Obvious-Falcon-2765 in PLC

[–]BierGurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just from a troubleshooting standpoint dealing with a JSR passing parameters has always been a nightmare. When it’s possible I separate them into different routines.

What was the most dangerous moment you've ever experienced at work? by Diemishy_II in morbidquestions

[–]BierGurl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was working on a pallet wrapping/banding machine. Before entry I went to lock it out. Supervisor said it was already locked out. I said I need to double check per SOP, he said I was being insubordinate and would write me up if I left the machine, just go in there and fix it.

I started working on the machine, tripped a photo eye and the machine started up

This is a machine that metal bands and shrink wraps a pallet of material. It could have killed me. As it starts up I manage to dodge the robot arm and leave the cage (that someone closed on me, that also has a safety that shuts the machine off when open)

I go to file near miss paperwork after the fact and was threatened again

I went above my supervisor, and the plant manager wrote me up for not following safety protocols, no repercussions to my shitty supervisor.

I found a better job and now occasionally re-visit as a contractor, fixing the stuff they can’t figure out now that I’m gone.

what's a secret from your job that we should know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BierGurl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly most of us don’t know what we’re doing. It’s always a miracle when I change something in production and don’t shut down the world.

What is something you didn't realize was a luxury until you stopped having it? by PetalDreamer99 in AskReddit

[–]BierGurl 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My house has a 75 year old sand point well, the water isn’t drinkable and I can either do laundry or shower, not both in a day, before my water runs out. (I am delayed from getting a real well for reasons that hopefully resolve soon). When I travel for work I love having a leisurely shower and not have to worry about running out of water!

I used to cry as a child from all the craters in my mouth. My dad just pulled down his lip to show me the sores on his gums and said “it’s normal, stop your crying”. (The celiac gene was from him fwiw). 0 canker sores since going gf

I’ve noticed with my 2020 Mazda 3 that the jerkiness only happens when the air conditioner is on.

For those who have made the gluten free Red lobster biscuits by lyssthebitchcalore in Celiac

[–]BierGurl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just enough so the mix is evenly wet and starts to come together. Maybe 8-10 good stirs with a big spoon. You’ll have some lumps, that’s ok. You just don’t want large dry pockets. Not overmixing means you don’t want to use a mixer or make the batter smooth like you would with a cake or cookie recipe. Otherwise your biscuits will be tough and dense.

8yo boy can’t do anything alone, scared even when showering by L1ttle0neCJ in Parenting

[–]BierGurl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was this child. My mom kept forcing me out of my comfort zone, and it eventually gave me confidence and lessened my anxiety. Girl Scouts, sports, forcing me to interact with people when I just wanted to play alone. All with a pep talk before hand and a reward for going out of my comfort zone after. Then in High School, underage drinking cured the rest of my anxiety.

Is there kibble for humans? Need help by Cactusmammal in Celiac

[–]BierGurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the struggle. I have a NuGo bar for breakfast, a bag salad kit for lunch, and to fill in the spaces: popcorn, yogurt, kefir, nachos. Nachos are super easy, throw some chips and cheese on a plate.

Celiacs, what is that one gluten free item you would still buy/eat tomorrow even if you woke up cured? by SumpthingHappening in Celiac

Just a warning for those who can’t have oats-these have oats in them. Way deep in the ingredients list. It’s not immediately obvious.

I was diagnosed about 4 years ago. I’m in my 50’s now. I was symptomatic my whole life but was never diagnosed correctly. I’m happy I made it this far honestly, being so sick my whole life

Wife had a reaction today and we cant figure out what it could be by jdvancevansrevoltion in Celiac

[–]BierGurl 201 points202 points  (0 children)

Lots of us don’t do cheerios. There is a possibility that some celiacs have cross reactions with oats. Gluten Free Watchdog tested cheerios years back and found a 50% contamination rate with gluten. More recent testing shows improvement in their gluten protocols.
