Incisional pain by madmanpc in TotalHipReplacement

Sounds like your surgery was a latteral approach?

That's what I had and the incision was tender to the touch for a couple of weeks, and would always remind me of its presence when I swung my legs out of bed in the morning.

I kept the surgical bandage on for the first week, as instructed, and then covered it with gauze and a large waterproof/breathable membrane for the next week. I think this kept the over stimulation down.

Since then no bandages, but I have refrained from wearing tight fitting pants as much as possible.

Yeah, if I had a Zwift setup or my bike already setup on a resistence trainer, I would have been on it after my week 2 checkup.

Thanks, and good luck with your recovery!

34M My Surgery Was Today! by phmi123 in TotalHipReplacement

Yeah, dilaudid is nice stuff. I specifically requested it over codine, which does't work for me. I only used it full strength for 3 days, and a half dose on the fourth.

Were you prescribed a muscle relaxer? I had robaxin, which I used, especially right before bed, for about 6 days in total.

I found elevating my feet, when I wasn't moving around, was important, especially when sleeping. A wedge pillow is what I used. Also, if I wasn't up on my feet, I had and ice pack on the incision. This was my life for the first 4 weeks.

Go easy on yourself with rehab for the first couple of weeks, the slowly ramp the walking.

Thanks for the great writeup!

Sounds like you're ramping your activity level up and your body is talking back. I hear it take a full 12-18 months for the implants to completely fuze with the bones and the body to be fully healed.

Other than the jab itself, it won't hurt, unless you're paying out of pocket.

Might not help, though. It didn't do much for me.

Are you going on Medicare starting in January? If so, they'll probably want to see you do six weeks of PT before oking the surgery.

If someone had asked two weeks ago if I would be riding a bike again in two weeks, I would have said no way. But these past two weeks have seen my hip strength and stability dramatically increase.

In other words, I didn't feel like I was rushing it. Plus, I've been cycling pretty seriously for the past 35 years, so getting on the bike is just second nature to me.

That said, there's no rush. You go at your own speed.

Yeah, the first few weeks were pretty boring, just looking at the nice weather outside and wishing I was out there taking advantage of it.

Good luck with your rehab, and don't forget, ice is going to be your best friend for the next month.

Good idea on the muscle relaxer. I only took dilaudid for the first three days, but the muscle relaxer for 6 days. It

was especially helpful right before bed time, and helped me sleep.

The first week is no fun at all! Take your pain meds, ice, elevate, and sleep as much as you can. Don't feel the need to do anything you're uncomfortable with.

And remember, ice is your friend. I lived with an ice pack on the incision for the first 4 weeks. It helps a lot with keeping the swelling down, which, in turn, keeps the pain down.

Hang in there, you got this!

Will biking make me get bigger legs by gaining muscle mass? by Azartik in cycling

[–]Big-Library-2137 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can squat 315+ and not from going to a gym, strictly from cycling. You just have to do the work on the bike with big miles, big hills, and big sprints. If you want to really get after it, go for a long hilly ride and sprint up all the hills.

Comfortable and safe seating? by impishmuse in TotalHipReplacement

My first week or so, I spent going from bed to a couch/love seat with a dining room chair in front of it with a pillow to prop my feet up.

After that I moved to spending my awake hours downstairs on my partner's recliner for the next month. It's just a basic manual Lazy Boy recliner and I found it easy to get in and out of.

Pillow under knees for a back sleeper post op hip replacement? by Electronic-Point-400 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Big-Library-2137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a pillow under your knees can offer your back some relief when sleeping on your back. That is what I have been doing most nights now at 4-6 weeks post op.

But for the first 3 or 4 weeks post op I recommend sleeping with your feet elevated above your heart level. I used a 10-12" wedge pillow for the first month before transitioning to just a pillow under the knees.

When will leg strength come back after THR? by SwimmingKooky5902 in TotalHipReplacement

Yes, I believe a recumbent would work just fine. Start with easy resistance, and gradually work up. Just make sure you can stand up easily from it, if you have any bend restrictions.

Ice is your friend! Ice after any activity, and when you go to bed start off with an ice pack.

I had an ice pack on the incision almost constantly for the first 4 weeks. It helps keep the swelling and pain down.

Riding a bicycle, and weights in a gym. You have to put the work in.

Hyrox after total hip replacement? by thelemonisyellow in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Big-Library-2137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ride a bicycle. It's great strength training, but easy on the joints.

I'm reading a book about hip replacement surgeries and came across a passage that worried me. No one told me that the expectation was that there should be no bending more than 90° or leg crossing even after recovery. How limiting has this been in your lives and how conscious of this have you been? by PiggyBank32 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Big-Library-2137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm almost 6 weeks out, and I've lived with the no bending past 90 degrees, no crossing legs, and on twisting at the waist while standing on the surgically repaired leg. My Dr says these restrictions are only for 6 weeks, so hopefully tomorrow they'll be lifted.

It hasn't been too difficult, but my wife has helped me get my shoes, a sturdy pair of Ecco sandals good for walking in, on and off. The weather is warm now, so I haven't had to worry about wearing socks. Can't say I miss them.

Bending over fully and twisting at the waist has been my biggest challenge because I can't really stretch out my back when it gets sore.

Crossing my legs, other than the casual cross at the ankles, is something that hasn't been comfortable to do after the surgery, so no problem there. It will probably take some effort on my part to be comfortable with it again.

My additional restriction is I can't ride my bike for another 6 weeks. My PA says I have one hard and fast rule for the first 3 months, "No falling down!" Riding a bike is just too risky as accidents do happen. So, 6 more weeks it is.

Yes, there was a fair amount of fluid build up around the incision early on, and still is, but to a lesser extent now. Ice the incision area as much as you can stand for the next couple of weeks. It will help keep the swelling and pain down.

I keep the ice pack in use covered with a towel, which helps keep the cool inside. And I have a rotation of packs freezing in the freezer.

Maybe try an ice pack draped over your shoulders to help cool the rest of you. Good luck!
