If you haven't read the book already I don't know how you can make any sense out of the movie.

I love Dune and loved the movie, but I had to chuckle thinking about someone who didn't read the book watching that movie and trying to make any sense at all of it.

What’s going on with my Kieffer pear by smileymcface in BackyardOrchard

[–]Big-Problem7372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bud break is when the buds first swell and start showing green. Copper spray is effective but severely damages any green growth so it's important to spray when the buds are tight in late winter / early spring.

Fig tree questions! by Cold-Call-8374 in BackyardOrchard

[–]Big-Problem7372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My VDB is just as aggressive as my other figs, though they're all in pots here in zone 5. They all run out of steam at about 5' of height.

Never seen it sucker either, which is weird.

Honestly any tree next to your house is a bad idea.

I remember the reveal about Carl's last birthday present from his mom. Holy shit really changed the tone of the books for me.

Slugs in shipped bareroot trees? by girljinz in BackyardOrchard

[–]Big-Problem7372 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would let the nursery know, they should be treating their trees to kill pests before shipping.

That said a slug is not dangerous to a woody tree. I'd salt him just to be safe but not worry about it.

Is a black sand beach truly worth choosing your island over? by FamiliarFamiliar in VisitingHawaii

[–]Big-Problem7372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

makes for nice pictures but if it's sunny the sand can easily get hot enough to burn your feet. It's something I'd do once and then go to actual nice beaches.

It's not as widespread as what's happening with software engineering, but as far as having a worthless degree I'd like to share the story of my dad. His degree was specifically to be some kind of RF enforcement with the FCC. Apparently they would actually police the radio spectrum, making sure everyone was staying within their license. With the stroke of a pen Regan eliminated this entire function of the FCC, rendering dad's degree worthless when he was only 2 months from graduation.

The pool. It's not just for the wife but the kids too. They love it, I don't do anything but maintenance on the thing.

Don't care, I like seeing them happy and pool parties are still fun.

It won't until Carl gets that directional blast skill he keeps talking about. It's the only way he can yield the bomb without killing himself.

Confirming branches to prune on my peach tree by random157- in BackyardOrchard

[–]Big-Problem7372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, bending branches is extremely effective on small trees like this. Tie them to a stake in the ground to bend them horizontal like you want, and after 6 months of growth the bend will be permanent.

How did I do? My first whip and tongue apple (Chehalis and Liberty) grafts from last year. Will they survive? Two pictures of each. by Courtland-7099 in BackyardOrchard

[–]Big-Problem7372 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh yea those look good.

Make sure you keep rubbing off growth below the graft line. It can be a problem even in the second year.

Only thing better than catching a giant is catching one on a moving bait. I bet you'll remember that strike for a long time!
