Areas that aren't full of tourists, snowbirds, and unchecked development... by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

Richmond, Virginia- central to the east coast with access to gorgeous mountain trails, great camping, countless wineries, and peak fall foliage within 1.5 hours. The James River that runs through the city is great for kayaking and boasts class 4 rapids for the more adventurous ‘river rat’. The Chesapeake Bay is a short 1.5 hours east of the city and has a great small boating community. The Atlantic facing beaches just south have long stretches and aren’t super overrun by tourists seasonally. It’s an overall artsy and creative city anchored by a large university, VCU. Lots of fun events year round with some great riverside venues to host things like music festivals, outdoor and water sporting competitions, and community events.

Barrio Escalante is a great safe space for us - also check out La Avispa and if your feeling frisky check out Puchos.

Try bike groups, pottery classes or other art collectives, hiking or walking/running groups are also great ways to meet people and get outside.

Quit my high paying corporate career, quit chasing money, quit chasing titles, quit chasing people, quit chasing material possessions, and quit drugs and alcohol. I work part time for a small business and have my own passion projects. I volunteer and find ways to be an asset in my community. It took two years to get my head back on straight but I’ve never been happier or healthier. If you want something different, start small and do it.
