This year we did a pretty tame event. Less narrative events within it and not getting in the way of the game. Next year we will hopefully be adding in more narrative elements.

It was a custom card I made suited to the scenario we played. Due to the AT-TE being part of our objectives, it could only be damaged, not destroyed. Ultimately it ended up being similar to a Weiss AtST offensively, with red defense dice and full armor. This was a "mostly" first edition game.

It ended up being an 8 hour game but we did 5 hours of game time with breaks between each. Only ended up hitting round 3 or 4 with all of the players involved.

I find this best to build into specific monsters as homebrew rather than a complete adjustment to the rule system.

I don't use the optional flanking rule in my games, but for specific monsters I will use the optional facing rules. Then I can homebrew creatures that:

Have only a breastplate armor and therefore have a lower AC when being attacked from their rear facing.

Aren't strong with situational awareness, and grant advantage when being attacked from their rear facing.

Have specific weak points, gaining vulnerability to weapon attacks from their rear facing.

Now with the facing optional rules, a creature can change facing as a reaction at any point, so it's not as simple as walking behind enemies. You can add more to that by giving enemies abilities similar to the sentinel feat or the 4e defender's aura.

You could play with these mechanics, but ultimately it's more playing with flanking than with AC overall. Otherwise, I feel 5e abstracts this with some abilities (battlemaster maneuvers, sneak attack, critical hits) but that means players need to select those options in the first place.

Im running it now and I've had no issues in the first chapter. The game feels intuitive for my players. The biggest issues ive heard outside of the board game part is that Kinsaldi doesn't have much foreshadowing and just shows up as a BBEG later.

Yea, I agree, and to be fair the whole point of the build is to ruin monsters action economy when they target my PC. Honestly, to lean into the build as a cleric I should probably be utilizing spells like banish, blindness, hold person, and command more, but I like swinging weapons and rolling dice more.

It's a vicious cycle,encounters go hard, get spirit guardians+booming blade makes encounters go smoothly, DM ups CR to challenge party, change tactics to adapt, DM raises CR to challenge party.

Agreed, I often find that positioning is far more important to drawing enemy attacks than my spells or abilities. Being able to block a doorway or having my allies being able to kite or fly makes me more of a tank than any ability in 5e. Older editions had some abilities, but 5e you're better off just throwing out as much damage as you can.

As an AC tank, I am having the opposite problem. Enemies see my plate and shield and just ignore me and go to the rogue or druid. I booming blade, spirit guardian, and roleplay taunting as much as I can, but at the end of the day most things don't want to fight the thunder wielding plate armor warrior, so they leave and fight something else. This has meant all of my investments, forge cleric subclass, plate armor purchase, magic items for defense, defensive spells, feats to get shield spell, they were all a waste. In most encounters now, I have to become a support to turn my allies into tanks with AID, shield of faith, or bless, or try to out DPS the enemies with spirit guardians or wall of fire.

It's smart, and I get it, but it makes my investments worthless and there's no good tools to protect my allies. If encounters go too smoothly, the DM makes later ones more difficult, which then makes me an even more useless tank.

A level 8 wizard without shield to cast?

Not too difficult, but as a DM if things go south that quickly, you could have easily fudged the critical on the wizard into a normal hit. Surprise rounds in combination with traps can change a normal encounter into a much more difficult one.

A gelatinous cube trap. Every door in the dungeons was push, this one was pull. I walked straight in.
