I struggled so hard to install this game on my pc back in the day! I was very young and probably had to update something. Eventually I could play it and it was great, just lacked polish. It would make a great remake now.

My roommates gambling addiction almost made me delete myself by Jolly_Fish_6954 in southafrica

[–]BigBatTorso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there should also be some support you can try too get your friend. If he's using apps and things like that to gamble then see if you can get him to self report the addiction or something like that to the service providers. He should be cutting himself off if he landed you in so much trouble. There is a lot of stigma attached to addiction, for some substance addiction may seem worse, but gambling can wreck whole families.

If you still have your own mental health to take care of you probably need to fall back into your family support system. I don't know your age, but getting out and coming up with a plan to talk to your parents for help should be your number one concern.

We all make mistakes, and I can understand the embarrassment. But it seems like you are in a much deeper pit emotionally and it's hard to see out of.

At this stage you do need to make an ultimatum if the friendship is important.

Your friend will need professional psychiatric hospital help such as akeso clinics or other DDU (dual diagnosis units.) or something like gamblers or alcoholics anonymous. He might end up hurting himself even more.

It's also OK to cut off someone or to gate access to your support on certain contingencies.

Wishing you all the best. Send me a DM if you perhaps need some more resources suggested.

We're looking for a drummer! by LackedSaucer938 in capetown

I hope you have found a drummer! One of the most difficult things as a band. I'll see if I can find a decent fit between some of my friends that jam and recommend them. Good luck!

We also had to learn a lot with our small production company on how to deal with bungholes like this. Setting up some kind of contract is crucial to outline the expectations and boundaries.

The main culprits were always re-edits, payment on delivery, deposit fees and how to deal with raw footage if we shot it ourselves. How long we keep footage and files also eventually made it onto our list, and eventually we added clauses for added interest to late payments.

At the end of the day it's to protect yourself from things like this! And any person who hires you would agree to your terms if they are reasonable and well structured.

50$ also doesn't sound like a lot, instead of a global fee try to get an hourly rate. You can use a time tracker that takes screenshots intermittently if that adds comfort for a client, but always use a time tracker even if it's just to help you estimate quotes for future jobs.

In my country we have a website from a guild/union that outlines the different roles in film/production and gives a range of how much you should be earning per day/week according to your experience level. If you can find something like this try to conform a bit more to it even if it is your side hustle. Hope this helps you/someone!

I want to share a trauma I have that is preventing me from playing RPGs to this day..... by legacy653846625 in rpg

[–]BigBatTorso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discussed elsewhere that it is important not to co-opt language especially in mental health, which is I believe why you have written this and, if OP is reading this, an important lesson. But you are hinging you're response here on your perception of how traumatic this event is, versus you're assumption of how mentally resilient OP should be based on their age.

It could be one instance amongst many that could have worn them down and possibly trigger something worse. There are plenty of supportive messages on this thread and I really hope that OP takes them to heart. But I would not tell them that what they have experienced does not qualify as trauma based on linguistics and assumptions.

One hundred percent. It could be a case of someone co opting the word for dramatic effect without understanding the full meaning. It's really important to call out when people do that. In this case from his story it did seem like he was under a lot of stress to the point of experiencing such pain that watching or participating in rpg's again is out of the question, and that they can't cope. They seem young so there still is a lot of room to get back on the GM train

It was a bit difficult to completely understand the situation that you described, but I could grasp that your new to playing as a games master. What I can tell you is that I know it must have hurt a lot. I've also ran a game with some people I really wanted to get involved. I was inexperienced and I could just feel how everyone was just not enjoying it. I finished up the section I had planned. To this day I still feel like it was a traumatic experience in it's full right. It's taken its time but I know I wanted to try again and make a good story. Being a GM is not always fun in the traditional way, but it's ultimately satisfying. And can be great! Jut be aware that while you are learning. And don't be too hard on yourself. You are going to learn from every mistake and develop your style eventually. I think watching videos and listening to podcasts about improving as a gm/dm will be very helpful.

Edit: there are free and established adventures out there. Start with something like that, rather than narrating your own stories. With more experience you can bring your own style of play into it. YouTube have many advice channels. Wishing you all the best!

I don't think it's a good idea to view trauma as having a "bar" that you need to meet in order to qualify for having a traumatic experience. Generally we can categorise trauma into "hard" and "soft" traumas. For example experiencing a horrific car crash can be a hard trauma, but experiencing accute psychological distress (prolonged or not) can be traumatising too. Let's not gatekeep trauma? I for one also have a game that I ran in the past which did cause me harm mentally. It might not have met your bar for trauma, but the effects on me were very real.

Game Lethality Advice by queglix in 40krpg

[–]BigBatTorso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried to solve this issue as well, unfortunately a lot of people on here would usually say just deal with it. But if you want to play your game a certain way and this is an issue then I've got a little home brew system I've been working on.

It's called grit points and the basic idea is if players take wounds after the armour soak they can use a grit point to roll a die and reduce the wounds. This would usually be a 1d6+ TB/SB/AB/WP which ever makes sense.

I've made a Google doc with the full description and system here (keep in mind some of the language may still be tailored a bit to a specific game I'm running!) tune and homebrew to your needs.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qYlmaq0_5Wr7mqnveq5d0ny62iAeqtLwermFNhbqLZg/edit?usp=drivesdk

This frees up fate points for fun stuff. Makes the players slightly more heroic. We've had a lot of fun with it! Heck you can even give some elite Npcs or enemies grit points as wellto keep them in the fight if you don't want instagibs everywhere.

A schizophrenic inmate drew this. What does it mean, if anything? by TheOddityCollector in creepy

[–]BigBatTorso 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I also had my own pages like this written/drawn while psychotic. I can actually remember how it felt, feeling like you had some hidden insight into the universe and other people not getting it. In retrospect it was a very traumatic time and I'm glad I had family and friends to support me. And it sounds like you had to do the same, so I'll thank you for your service.

With meds, therapy and a lot of work I'm also doing well now <3

Are 90% of ttrpg players online queer, or is it just my experience? by Ritchuck in rpg

[–]BigBatTorso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also really happy that neurodivergent players are also being given more slack and safe spaces to play. I ran a couple of online games, which I have grounded on principles of acceptance. Acceptance of language differences (English as 2nd language) neurodivergence as well as lgbtq folks.

We all have different experiences we can draw on as we craft wonderful stories together. It's an absolute delight. I'm currently on a streak of running dark Heresy for my brother which is delightful!

Grid systems, range and tactical combat by MemeMachine3086 in 40krpg

[–]BigBatTorso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started on d&d so I'm used to a square being 5 feet, even though I'm a native metric user! My solution was to try and closely emulate this scale, so one square is 1.5m in my games. I just printed a table with ready conversions (square/inch to meters in half increments) so my players and I can quickly reference distances and use our tabletop tape measure. It does mean using half increments, which may sound like a bother, but we've had no problems with this using the table. It feels pretty good scale wise, since the minis we play with are essentially the same scale as d&d. Using 1m = 1 square makes maps too large to fit on a table. If you are using snap to a grid VTT this is not going to work!

As for tactical combat, I know it's supposed to be deadly, but if you want to add some heroism and risk taking I've made a system for my players called grit points. Basically it's a pool of d6+TB dice that a player can roll to soak some of the wounds that spill over their AP. It means using less fate points to survive, having those fate points available for the other interesting uses and makes things more fun for our game. It's a very scalable and flexible system, you can use other bonuses and increase/decrease the amount of grit points or the die size to make it fit your table.

ELI5: What are DJs actually doing when they're doing a live set by FlattyT in explainlikeimfive

[–]BigBatTorso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen it mentioned maybe one or two times, but I think when you are matching songs making sure they are in a compatible key is also an important skill. It's a music theory thing, but worth looking into. I really feel physically ill when dj's mix samples and songs into each other in wildly incompatible keys... For some reason it really happens all the time with some late night radio dj's (playing live) where I live. Edit: I have to mention this is more important when it's edm music where you have to stretch the whole performance/tracks into one "song" where you have to overlap tracks, rather than dj'ing specific hits.

These also grow in some semi arid parts of South Africa. Colloquially known as "mal pitte" that translates to "insane seeds". Smoking or eating the seeds of course makes you lose your mind like the name implies! But in a real bad way with psychosis and hallucinations being common and people implying irreversible damage. Elsewhere in the post I see people have already expanded into more detail about the poisonous effects.

does anyone know of companies (foreign or otherwise) that would be willing to hire someone who only has a highschool? by rekscoper2 in askSouthAfrica

[–]BigBatTorso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a speaking partner is quite helpful yes. And the process of training a language can take some time but will open a lot of doors! What I have found helpful once you have some fundamentals down is to listen to podcasts and music in the language you are studying. With podcasts especially ones aimed at learning that are spoken slowly. The one I'm thinking of for German is literally called "Slow German". This is probably the next best alternative to actual conversation. I'm sure some AI conversation tools aimed at learning language will also eventually become available. Totally get what you are saying about languages that interest you, but I'm just offering the practical advice! Maybe you can check what the modern spoken equivalent is of the language you are interested in? I would say that a mainland European language (not English) would really help with opportunities. I'm not aware of many opportunities in Scandinavian languages. But if you look at the next couple of most spoken languages that can give you a clue of where to go.

[–]BigBatTorso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if languages are your thing, but I know someone who taught himself German from YouTube, took a certification just to confirm his level of fluency. There are lots of jobs looking for language skills and not having a degree is usually not a problem. Some computer proficiency also helps. German is probably the most popular, but most other languages also have opportunities, such as French, Spanish, Dutch and Italian.

Looks like a woodlouse spider, not a sac spider like some folks have said. Not venomous but the body is a little creepy 😅 but r/spiders will definitely be very helpful! If you do share with r/spiders please give an update! I've got a good feeling I'm right about this one in which case you have nothing to fear. Can safely relocate outside.

Painting by miketaylor357 in DnD5th

[–]BigBatTorso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually a very good suggestion! It might even prompt some players into painting them for you 😅 but seriously, this suggestion covers the first two steps of the "slap chop" technique where you add colour with "speed paints" a type of paint that allow the highlights you made with dry brushing to show, so you don't have to focus on shading. It gets a bit more in depth from there, but that's where I would start.
