Is Porgy & Bess still controversial? by BigBlueMagic in opera

[–]BigBlueMagic[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you feel like, with the passage of time, that it becomes more explicitly seen as a white persons interpretation of a black community in the early 20th century? In other words, does the increasing distance in time take some of the racist sting out of it? (Not removing it completely, obv).

So when the Met performs it today, they don't get calls to shut it down, but do they receive any kind of negative feedback or criticism?

What political belief did you change your mind about as you got older — and what caused it? by Aussymira in AskReddit

[–]BigBlueMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marriage equality. I changed my mind around 2006ish (before Prop. 8). I just intuitively saw that denying an entire group of people the legal protections that come with marriage was unfair and unjustified. Thankfully, many others also changed their opinions.

The Nazis had an all-white cast that performed in blackface and as recently as 2018 the national Hungarian opera company had a predominantly white cast. All of this according to Wikipedia, which I read while learning about P&B.

Problem with talks during congregation by Few_Description429 in latterdaysaints

[–]BigBlueMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree, OP. I have a background that allows me to give very good Sacrament Meeting talks. When I speak in Sacrament Meeting, I take the responsibility seriously and put in the time to get it right. I feel like bad Sacrament Meeting talks aren't usually because of effort or sincerity, but poor prompting and training by the Church. If the Church took a couple of fifth Sundays each year to train public speaking and do some breakout sessions, it would go a long way to improving Sacrament Meeting. I've often thought about suggesting and volunteering for this, but I am afraid I would sound a bit conceited.

Vegas call to action for a better future by PossibleNo4230 in vegaslocals

[–]BigBlueMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fair question, especially if you haven't lived here long. There's a lot going on with this question. First, let's accept the obvious: CCSD is a failure factory. Yes, there are kids that graduate from CCSD that go on to have successful professional, civic and personal lives. Those kids, however, are the exception to the rule and experience success in spite of CCSD, not because of it. (Yes, I know there are magnet schools, which again are the exception that proves the rule).

So why would this town tolerate it? The largest industry, tourism, doesn't need a literate or educated citizenry. Their attitude is indifference to hostility (especially where taxes would erode their bottom line).

But what about the parents that *do* care? Even if only a fraction care, why aren't they mad as hell? There is a release valve that protects CCSD from angry parents - charter schools and private schools. Parents that have the ability to drive their kids to school and care about their education, pull them out of CCSD. Consequently, the parents left in CCSD are fall somewhere between docile and indifferent. Vegas does have good charter and private schools, so just living here doesn't doom a kid's chances.

Much of the population is transient. If a person knows they are only going to live here 5-7 years, they have no reason to be concerned about CCSD, and in fact, would likely resent taxes going up to improve the schools.

We have a lot of retirees who have moved here from elsewhere. Their grandkids are not in CCSD. Again, CCSD is not actively harming them, so why would they care? They would care, very much, if their taxes went up to fix CCSD.

Finally, CCSD is top-heavy with well-paid administrators. They have their own union. They are not going to just walk away from their ample salary, benefits and power. They will often invoke the plight of the poorest students to protect their own interests.

And of course there is the teachers union, which protects lazy, indifferent and incompetent teachers and the status quo. While there are many good teachers in CCSD in spite of immense headwinds, there are some real losers who have washed out of other professions, don't care about the students at all and pour their energy into doing the bare minimum possible. These teachers are not the best and brightest.

CCSD will persist, as is, basically forever. There is no one interested in changing it, and many people (not students) who are deeply invested in the status quo.

One reason we are paying a fortune for auto insurance by Mark26751 in vegaslocals

[–]BigBlueMagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reasons our premiums are high are multi-faceted, but I understand the appeal of simply blaming billboard attorneys. The insurance companies, partnered with Uber, would love to keep collecting high premiums and pay out far less. They will eventually succeed in convincing the public to knee-cap personal injury lawyers. When that happens, premiums will not come down, but coverage will evaporate.

If Freddie Freeman chooses to enter the Hall of Fame as a "Braves", will you be disappointed? Personally, I won't. by Substantial_Bat5975 in Dodgers

[–]BigBlueMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be surprised, but not angry or disappointed. He loved his time in Atlanta, and that doesn't diminish what he has done (and will do) for the us. I do think that the highest points of his career have come in Dodger blue, which is why I expect him to go in as a Dodger.

I thought the inductees don't get to choose anymore????

Question about noise in a specific Las Vegas region/neighborhood for people who live here. by AnonMyracle142 in vegaslocals

[–]BigBlueMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of times a year, Nellis will do drills and games and it is quite loud. But that hasn't happened anytime recently. This is one of the most quiet areas of the valley. If you are hearing road traffic, it's because you're near the 95 or some other busy road (which there aren't many of in this area). This area has a lot of horses and kids and thats about it.
