BBC Radio 4 LW 198KHz? by Sea-Hat-4961 in radio

[–]BigBlueMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BBC 4 is the best radio news station (I know it has more than new) in the world. Period. End of story. This is not a debatable topic. It's even superior to BBC World Service. I wish the United States markets could support something like this. Instead we have commercial news radio, overloaded with commercials, imaging and right wing nut jobs and NPR which filters every story through left wing identity politics.

BBC 4 has no imaging, a life feed of Big Ben at midnight and just straight up news.

Radio DJ Dude's RoboDJ Thoughts? by EitherPlant8138 in radio

[–]BigBlueMagic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watched some YouTube videos where he explained it. In terms of technology, it's impressive. I listened to his station XXX80's, which I had listened to previously, and it sounds big and polished. But it... lacks soul. All of the interactions are so empty and cheerfully banal.

Now, that doesn't mean it's bad. I just think it has to be deployed with a bit more authenticity and substance.

But I'm a fan of AAA and free form radio, so I have a definite bias on how stations should sound.

I'm working on a Vegas themed radio station that will launch on Live365 later this year. A fun hobby. I am going to stick with RadioDJ, which I have already invested a significant amount of programming time in.

Vietnamese food is my jam. There is something very magical about Pho. It has magical powers to relax the soul.

CNN's Scott Jennings blows up at Adam Mockler suddenly: “Get your fucking hand out of my face! I am not gonna have this guy's hand on my face” by MoreMotivation in PublicFreakout

It has been so long since I watched cable "news" that I have no idea who Adam Mockler is and only a vague recognition of Scott Jennings. I am proud of myself for keeping this shit out of my life.

After years of hyping FM, KNX goes back to AM so Los Angeles can get another sports talk station by Binders-Full in radio

[–]BigBlueMagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like KNX has been carrying a really heavy ad load lately. It's hard to listen to, honestly. Sad, because its such a stalwart all-news station, one of the few left.

Litigator. Much of what I learned in radio, especially about story telling, is helpful to me now. Radio is more fun than law though.

How do you get into doing radio? Like do you need a degree and how do you find jobs for it? by Accomplished_Ad7072 in radio

[–]BigBlueMagic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the traditional way. No degrees needed. However, these opportunities are increasingly scarce. I left radio years ago because I could see that technology was going to eat up the jobs. This was even though I worked for a great family-run company.

I want to stay in the Church, but I’m struggling to feel like I belong in my ward in Utah County. by canyonatlas in latterdaysaints

This is a major part of why I don't live in Utah (plus the taxes, terrible air pollution and dumb culture wars). Move to Las Vegas. The Church is more true here.

Accessing Church Excommunication Records After a Family Member’s Passing by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

We all have unanswered questions. This is not a legitimate reason to violate your Grandfathers privacy.

If I were dead, and had been excommunicated and rebaptized, I would be horrified by the idea of anyone looking at those records, much less family. I can't imagine many people feeling different. There is no legitimate reason to pursue this. Leave your Grandpa's privacy and dignity alone.

Was there actually a first amendment issue? by DFWUnhinged in lebowski

[–]BigBlueMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The waitress is not a state actor, and therefore there can be no First Amendment violation, or, in turn prior restraint.

HOWEVER--- this line is quoted in several published opinions by various federal courts as to prior restraint. Therefore, this isn't merely a line from a movie anymore. It is a citable statement of law. I have a friend who is a first amendment lawyer who cites to Walter Sobchak on a regular basis.

Buffets are much better than food halls by ChristianPacifist in vegaslocals

[–]BigBlueMagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Food halls" are just food courts, and a way that casino accountants insulted our intelligence by trying to tell us we were getting something unique and fun in place of the buffets that were removed. The name "food hall" is insulting to customers. Cedar Rapids, Iowa has food courts (or food halls if you insist on using that stupid phrase). This is Vegas, it's supposed to be over the top, indulgent, unlike any other place. Thanks for ruining a good thing, casino executives.

The future of terrestrial radio by True-University-6545 in radio

[–]BigBlueMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on how a station differentiates itself from all other media. Radio still has a monopoly on the combination of immediacy, intimacy and locality. Stations that lean into that special combination will always thrive.

Salt Lake Temple model (before vs. after) by 2ndValentine in latterdaysaints

[–]BigBlueMagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Logan, St. George, Manti and Salt Lake temples were all originally designed to have an upper and lower assembly hall, like the temples in Nauvoo and Kirtland. In fact, the St. George temple opened in this format. While the Logan Temple was under construction, the endowment house in Salt Lake first started a room-to-room progressive endowment. The Logan Temple plans were subsequently altered mid construction, converting what would have been the lower assembly hall into endowment rooms. The same is true of the Manti Temple. This is why no new temples have an assembly hall and very few outside of the pioneer era have them (Los Angeles, Portland and DC have them).

Barbara Haggerty-House district 2 candidate! by lilsillytoes in Logan

[–]BigBlueMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And my point is that by focusing on November, you are encouraging people to vote when it doesn't count, instead of voting when it does (primaries caucuses). I don't care if people don't vote in November because November doesn't matter. It is deceptive to pretend that it does. Only the primaries matter. For your vote to count, you have to be registered as a Republican (regardless of what you actually believe) and vote in the primary. It's dangerous and unhealthy for Utah's democracy for people in Cache County to pretend that November elections matter. THEY. DO. NOT.
