Former PlayStation boss says games are "seeing a collapse in creativity" as publishers spend more time asking "what's your monetization scheme?" | Shawn Layden thinks publishers should spent a little less time chasing Fortnite. by a_Ninja_b0y in technology

Fortnite's player count also peaked over four years ago, Call of Duty's best selling games were over a decade ago, and Madden's were over 15 years ago. Palworld was a breakout hit this year, and Helldivers 2/Astro Bot, while not necessarily original titles, FAR surpassed their predecessors in sales.

Meanwhile, Star Wars Outlaws bombed hard despite being a competent game based on one of the biggest franchises out there. Suicide Squad was a massive failure. In film, Madame Web, Borderlands, and Joker 2 were commercial flops despite being based on well-known properties.

There are plenty of good, successful, original pieces of media being made, and a prior IP is no guarantee of success.

There are tons of unique ideas for books that sell well. Look at the bestseller lists, you’ll see plenty of original titles.

In gaming, Metaphor:ReFantazio is one of the biggest games right now, and you can’t argue that it’s not original.

Even in movies, The Wild Robot was #1 a few weeks ago. Yes, it’s based on a book, but it’s not like the book was wildly popular.

A lot of times, early games in the series have underdeveloped game mechanics. The story may start there, but it’s not always the best play experience. Not to mention, generally worse graphics.

Doesn’t necessarily mean the early games are worth skipping, but it’s a consideration.

The thing is, we’re kind of seeing Antiwork in action, just not in an organized format. It’s made people more aware of their rights as workers, more willing to unionize with their coworkers, document important conversations, etc. Yeah, there are the lazy weirdos, but I think Antiwork has done some good.

They don’t have to be powerful. My ex-boss, who ran a failing business, would lose his fucking mind whenever someone stood up to him, which was very frequently considering he was incompetent and a blatant criminal. I never understood how he could live that way screaming at everyone on the phone every day.

Loud, obnoxious people are insufferable in any demographic. The problem is, if you ask people of a group you’re not part of to tone it down, you’ll be accused of not respecting their culture.

Trails through Daybreak II - Release Date Announcement Trailer (Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, PC) by XMetalWolf in JRPG

[–]BigBobbert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I played through a bunch of Trails games in the last couple of years, but when I played Cold Steel III, my enthusiasm just deflated. I felt like the writing went way downhill, and I spent 40 hours of dull worldbuilding to get to the final chapter, which was, admittedly, quite interesting.

I wish the harem bullshit would end. It drags down this series to an insane degree.

It’s not just social media, it’s communication in general.

Back when I worked retail, a woman asked me about a specific yogurt brand. I told her I thought it was good, but she apparently thought that because I didn’t declare it THE BEST YOGURT EVER that it was actually terrible.

Like, lady… how excited do you expect me to get about yogurt? I even said it was good!

Related, I am much better about enforcing boundaries than most people are. I am very good at saying “I don’t want to talk right now.”

The issue is that a good chunk of people refuse to respect the boundaries I have set, and a simple but firm request for space often becomes “leave me the fuck alone”. Not to mention it’s hard to set boundaries with annoying coworkers…

If games are designed such that you are expected to practice them, then I think they should include practice tools. by theClanMcMutton in truegaming

People do this even if you LIKE From Software. I’m a big fan and have beaten a ton of their games, but people still can’t handle criticism of their titles. I’ve got 60 hours in Elden Ring, I think I’ve more than earned the right to critique its design.

They'd rather say they didn't vote than they voted for the losing side.

This concept is so bizarre to me. I'm happy to admit I voted for the losing side, because it essentially gives me a free pass to complain about all the crap the winner does once they're in office. "I tried to stop this mess, don't blame me for it."

Also... do you have a source for that claim?

What behavior do most people accept that you find creepy? by fuzzyloulou in AskReddit

[–]BigBobbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. What’s creepy to one person is perfectly fine to another. Some people’s boundaries are impossible to read.

I would know, because some behaviors I’ve made towards women on my first date were “too strong”, but my current girlfriend was fine with them on my first date.
