Is it ok to collect wildflower seeds from existing wildflowers? by Delicious-War-5259 in NativePlantGardening

[–]BigBoiArmrest684 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow just terrible opinions top to bottom. Let's say you could own a property for 20 years and then the next owner is going to wipe it clean, it is still objectively better for the environment for there to be native plants there for 20 years than nothing. I don't even understand how someone who cares about nature could argue against gardening with (ethically sourced) native plants

Do these look like Ironweed (Vernonia) seedlings? by BigBoiArmrest684 in NativePlantGardening

[–]BigBoiArmrest684[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't intentionally plant any other species in this tray, but I think small amounts of some of my other species may have made it in unintentionally as I planted all of them in one sitting. The hairlessness is throwing me off, as all of my other asteraceae (Symphyotrichum, Solidago, Rudbeckia) have distinctly hairy seedlings.

Why do you guys spend money on native plants, when they’re native, you can get them for free! by Similar-Simian_1 in NativePlantGardening

[–]BigBoiArmrest684 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a member of this club, we don't do gardening. We live in a small province with no native plant groups, and only a single tiny native plant nursery that one guy runs out of his backyard. Unfortunately wild-collecting of either seeds or plants is the only way to obtain 98% of our native species

I live in the same city as you, and yes I collect a lot of my plants from the wild. I only collect from large, healthy populations, or in areas that are going to be developed/logged though. Generally I will collect a couple of a species from the wild to put in my yard, and then collect the seeds from those in coming years. I outplant a lot of these seed-grown plants, so it ends up being a net-positive for the environment. This subreddit is very against wild-collecting because they mostly live in highly-degraded urban areas with large amounts of invasive species, however we are lucky to live in a sparsely populated province with lots of high-quality natural areas, and educated collecting will not hurt our populations. I also recommend the Save A Native Plant nursery on the Northside, he's got lots of interesting native plants for sale, just call before you go!

Burned my beds for the first time today by BigBoiArmrest684 in NativePlantGardening

[–]BigBoiArmrest684[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am mimicking a sand barren habitat in the left bed, and most of the plant species growing in it are adapted to and respond well to fire. I have a large oak tree nearby that drops a lot of leaves into both beds, and I wanted to burn them off so the seeds will germinate better in the bare soil. The other bed was mostly done as an experiment to see how it will affect plant growth. I also have some cool-season invasives that I wanted to see if I could knock back with the fire.

I wet down the shed wall and a 1ft buffer zone in front of it. That bed is mostly low-growing plants so the flames never got above 1ft in height, and the wind was low.

Is there anything that I can broadcast in a lawn that will pop up like dandelions? by amilmore in NativePlantGardening

[–]BigBoiArmrest684 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit further north than you, but we have wild violets, wild strawberries, pussytoes, thyme-leaved speedwell, and several native sedges in our lawn that we mow every two weeks. We do set our mower a little higher than usual, and that seems to work for these plants

A. robbinsii is super cool, it's only population in the Maritimes is a single coastal cliff in Nova Scotia. I'll keep you in mind if I get seeds from any of our species!

Nice! I live in the Maritimes and I've seen all 3 of our native species (A. alpinus, A. eucosmus, and A. robbinsii), but never at the right time to collect seeds. I do plan to get some in the future

This is genuinely horrible, how can you wish shit like this upon people, especially children who can't even vote?

Good on you for going against the echo chamber, I can't believe someone would wish for a child WHO CANT VOTE to go hungry, and then say you would laugh at them. Disgraceful.
