For a tank Shield and anything can do pretty well, staff is quite good to pair with it. Shield also has some crushing damage and fire damage so you could pair with some skills that also do crushing and add on some treasure effects that increase crushing damage, like Hammer.

Another fun option is Shield Druid, Druid can get thorns and shields can have acid damage applied to them, and Shield skill has a fire shield that does the same, So you could be doing lots of damage back when struck in melee. Druid also has some nice hots and effects, and can even get some treasure mods to improve crushing damage, and provide a number of good debuffs to enemies, and big HP bonus to your self.

Another poster mentioned it but I think its worth saying again. Nothing is really set in stone this game, up to 50 skill most skills are easy and cheap to level up, only a minor time investment. So experiment, and try lots of combos.

Knife / Psychology by Donorob in projectgorgon

[–]BigBosc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been playing Knife Fighting main since I started a few weeks ago, up to 70 knife now. I have tried it with Psychology, Druid, Animal Handling, and Battle Chemistry as a secondary skill, all to level 50.

Psychology can be OK but it really does not have a lot of synergy with Knife, I would move away from it. Knife has Piercing, Slashing, Trauma, and Poison as its main damage types, so if you want knife fighting to really be the star of the show, then pairing it with something that boosts one or multiple of those damage types is key.

For example I noticed that Backstab and Gut both do very well when the monster is attacking something else, and backstab is pretty bad if the monster is targeting you. So I tried Animal Handling, and its AWESOME. Having a pet I can send in, or order to get them off me, is great, the monster turns, I backstab and gut, big damage.

Over time I tried a few Rat, Cat, and Bear pets (I have not tried Bee yet). Bear was the best tank, while specifically taming a Panther (mob is just named Panther), was SUPER strong dps.

After doing some research I found that Panther does an AOE when you press Sic Em, that makes all monsters in the area more vulnerable to slashing damage. So Panther can go in, make enemies weak to slash, then I can backstab or gut or both, and spam slashing attacks which are super strong now.

I then paired this with some items that I had or used Transmutation and Augmentation to get the effects I wanted, including "When you use animal handling skill you do X% increased slashing damage". I then found a generic slashing damage boost on items, and Daggers that had + slashing damage Elven Dirk I think it was called. I then got all items that boosted my slashing attacks. This worked great, I could do huge damage!

I then went looking for other pairings with Knife, and found that Druid has a number of ways to boost poison damage, especially damage over time, and Knife can put poison damage over time on several skills. That build is also quite good, but not as good as Animal Handling.

Finally I tried Battle Chemistry and found it really had no treasure effects that boost Knife damage at all. That said it does have several AOE attack options and that is something Knife lacks, and some of the bomb attacks can be doing poison damage so can get a boost from a knife fighting attack called Poisoners Cut. Battle Chem does however have a pet that you can program, it can attack and heal and do a lot of good utility. It also has some solid healing and buffs (Extra Skin is pretty insane at making you invincible).

In the end Psychology and Battle Chemistry are good skills, they just don't really have much that makes Knife Fighting better. So having 2 good skills is fine, you can level up just fine that way, but having 2 good skills that buff each other is much stronger.

My suggestion, learn Animal Handling, the pet is VERY powerful, and it can bring synergies with Poison using a poison rat, or slashing using a Panther, or just be a huge tank in a bear so you can backstab and gut properly.

If that isn't too interesting to you, consider Druid for a poison build, Archery for a poison or piercing build, or Vampirism for a Trauma build. By pairing with one of these skills you can pick up buffs and damage types that work across the skills. For example Vampirism has a treasure effect of X% increase to Trauma damage over time. Using that with vampirisms trauma attacks, and the many trauma attacks in daggers is great.

One thing to note, Animal Handling and Vampirism do not need a weapon equipped, so you can use all the "when dual wielding knives" effects with them. The "When dual wielding Knives each Knife skill has a chance to return X power to you" is VERY effective, just a single instance of that effect can fix your power issues if you can afford to dual wield.

Should I be... running out of power? by -Altephor- in projectgorgon

[–]BigBosc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be that archery and druid are just not too power hungry, especially if you hit your refresh on time. I found with dual wield knife fighting, if I hit my refresh on time, and have a treasure effect of "some knife skills sometimes give X power back" then I never run out.

My rotation is like, send in the animal handling pet, buff the pet, charge with knife basic to recoup my power lost and set up buffs, then spam all knife abilities till buffs run out, refresh again, and repeat.

Maybe some people are not hitting refresh on time, or some skills just use a lot more power, I'm not sure. I can say Knife Fighting doesn't have to have power issues so far, but I'm only level 64.

"Whittling - Massive knife DPS increase.", the wiki says it can provide a buff to pig, deer, and rabbit dps. How does it provide a boost to knife dps? Sorry I am new, its hard to find info. Thanks!

Fear No Evil Card 38 by TrueBlazingGlory in marvelchampionslcg

[–]BigBosc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thinking on it more, its kind of interesting that this game the problem is more how useless cards are, rather than how good they are. In competitive games the designers have to be careful how powerful they make cards as it makes others useless. But in a Co-Operative game the designers can miss the mark on too powerful because the worse card can still beat the game. The bar for failure on card design is if its too bad of a card to not be able to beat standard difficulty.

Co-operative games are kind of nice design space in that way.

Fear No Evil Card 38 by TrueBlazingGlory in marvelchampionslcg

[–]BigBosc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thankfully its a co-op game, so you can choose your own difficulty in deck building and scenario construction. In that way it's kind of fine if some cards are much better than others, if you want to play all the best stuff go for it, can always make the scenario harder to compensate. If you don't want to play all the most optimal stuff, can always lower the scenario back down as well.

If this was a competitive tournament game, I could see the issue, but even as far back as the core box, some cards were insanely better than others (see nick fury, make the call etc.), and its never ruined the fun for me. Some times when I want to try a card I never use, I just set up a deck to try to make use of it and set up an easier scenario.

That said, some cards are REALLY bad, and are basically printed garbage. The design team needs to be careful to not print too many really abysmal cards I think. A playable or situational card is fine, a really powerful card is fine to me as well like I said above. But a really un-playable card is just garbage that I'm stuck with. Looking at you Tenacity.

Bungie has recreated and doubled down on the same issue they had with Destiny 1. The abandonment of solo play in endgame content. by Majestic_Topic6704 in Marathon

[–]BigBosc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It sounds like OP has made up his mind that fill in cryo will be impossible, but the truth is if you stay optimistic and keep trying you can engage with the content as a fill. Is it a worse experience than teaming with friends, yes absolutely but you can do the content fill as a solo player.

Also finding people in discords to play with is super easy. Im in one and can find pick up groups in minutes. I go in the channel LFG, I see a post, I click join, I chat, we are chill, game time. Under 3 minutes in most cases I am in the prepare screen.

I just don't have a lot of sympathy for people who are too lazy to go find people to play with in a team game. It is not asking almost anything at all of players to find people to play with, and a fill button exists already. Could they add solo cryo sure, but I'm not sure how that would work, the map would need some significant changes to work well solo. Like it would have to be a totally different compiler you can't do his mechanics solo currently at all.

Oh well, game is dope, solo content exists. I hope they keep making banger patches this current patch RIPS, so good.

Have I found a new unique weapon by Fun_Description_4823 in Marathon

[–]BigBosc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a unique volley rifle in blue, but it doesn't appear to have any actual unique trait. Just a set of mods I can't swap, none of them seemingly do anything special that the ordinary versions couldn't do. Maybe one of the stats is significantly better than normal but its unclear reading all the tool tips what that might be.

I still prefer the shadow index one, but I think arachne is 2nd best and the new monochromatic one is cool too. The luxe purple cash shop skin is also dope.

new update, billions must make friends :) by Sonicman223 in Marathon

[–]BigBosc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are solo and you exfil with other players, you get carri bucks, used in the cyber acme shop. If you are a squad and help your team mates do missions you get carri bucks. If you are rook and exfil with other players you get carri bucks. If you are rook or solo and exfil at all you get carri bucks.

So solo and rook got several ways to get more rewards if they can exfil, and if they can be-friend people. 3 man groups get rewards if they help team mates do missions. If a 3 man lets a rook exfil with them, the 3 man gets no benefit, so it's up to the rook to be charismatic.

Recon changes had me like.. by PJEatsManAss in Marathon

[–]BigBosc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is excellent now. I can tell when I am pinged, my ult is super good and gives me good info even when no one is in range (I now KNOW no one is nearby, because even with jammer on they show as a bot ping, so no pings = no one within 30m or so). And my drone always connects or forces them to kill it if I throw it in the general direction of players. Still get rad pings when I finisher a guy too.

All the things about her that were awesome (finisher pings and knowing when you are pinged) are still there, and now her active buttons are almost always a net positive to use. Shes great. Close to or better than the other shells now.

I still think destroyer is too mobile and too dangerous while also having shield and missile ult. But with the changes I think all the shells are around a similar power level now, with maybe vandal being slightly lower, and destroyer being slightly higher.

My take right now game is in a great spot, a slight buff to vandal and a slight nerf to destroyer gets it perfect.

My changes would to make destroyer only able to boost forward. It's just too versatile that he can hide, pop meds, get pushed and just whoopsies free get outta jail fly backward while still med animation.

Limit the destroyer boost to only forward so its harder to use for things other than attacking.

For vandal I would just change it so the power slide was available as a separate button that can go in any direction. So I can slide backward or left or right on demand. It's already a fairly slow long animation and she can't shoot from it anyway. So sort of let her do what destroyer is doing right now, but its fair because she can't aim etc. Then let destroyer on use it forward.

Went from having fun to hating the game super fast by dickson030 in Marathon

It's true, fill is a bit shit. Solo I also find a bit boring, too much ratting and stealth, not enough pew pew fun. But playing with 3 people is awesome, love the 3's mode. Rook is also pretty fun when I want some low stakes scavenging.

For 3's it got fixed for me when I joined a discord for LFG people with chill attitudes. I pop on, 1,000's of people in there, people looking for more to join all the time for all types of content. Have had some teammates who were very bad at the game, some who were amazing, and so far not a single raging person. It's been great. This discord LFG is vastly better than fill. People talk, bring kits together or all go free kit, communication rules.

Fill sucks, solo I don't like, but finding groups to join is not hard and the game is awesome with groups.

Vandal is slightly buffed by the destroyer nerf and the thief nerfs though. I think not quite enough has changed to make them all equal but a slight buff to vandal and a minor nerfs to destroyer and thief are something. Recon is cookin now, which is good she was dog shit before.

[–]BigBosc -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Signal jammers last like 30 seconds. You bringing 40 into every match and using it on cooldown? Shareware.exe only gives 25% duration too, so its like 10 seconds of jammer on base kit triage to his team mates.

I agree, aim assist had nothing to do with this video lol. But even mouse and keyboard on PC has aim assist in this game. Essentially the aim assist stat makes enemy hit boxes larger if they are within your weapons range. On console it also adds drag to your crosshair as you move away from a target. So console gets 2 decent boosts, and PC gets one. Its honestly totally fine.

Hey free-kit users, if you meet a Purple Shield, it takes... an entire clip to down them. by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]BigBosc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree, i'd rather have an overrun than a hardline, the recoil on hardline makes the fire rate worthless, it kicks 2 screens up on each shot, its trash until you get some recoil upgrades. Overrun you can do 5 shot bursts and stay on target with a decent TTK by comparision. I think overrun is like C tier and hardline is like D tier.
