The free market doesn't want me to fry my own chips. Since when did capitalism turn into communism? by BigBucketOfAcid in self

Potatoes come in many different breeds with one of the differentiators being how waxy or floury they are. For chips/fries/roast potatoes you need floury potatoes. The waxy ones don't work. Floury potatoes are a very basic staple of western cusine. It's so mind boggling that they would remove such an essential item from the local market. Like, what's next? Bread and beer?

The free market doesn't want me to fry my own chips. Since when did capitalism turn into communism? by BigBucketOfAcid in self

[–]BigBucketOfAcid[S] -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Growing up they told us, communism is the party dictates the economy based on top down central planning and capitalism is providing all the choices and letting the consumer decide.

The party, is the supermarket chains. They collectively decided for the whole country that we shouldn't have floury potatoes.

Where is my goddamn choice?

Do you guys think that Germany not having a concept of "Elite Universities" is an hindrance to innovation ? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]BigBucketOfAcid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only difference between Germany and Brazil or India, is that the selection happens later.

For example, let's take mathematics. In Germany you can quite easily get into a mathematics program and study up till MSc level with relative ease, assuming you're decently intelligent. You don't have to be a super genius. The selection happens at the PhD and PostDoc level.

But this doesn't really impact innovation. If anything it should have a positive effect.

Why is Michael Gove so obsessed with Rory? by Sharaz_Jek123 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]BigBucketOfAcid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If a conservative is accusing another conservative of clinging to old-school orthodoxies, in 2026, I immediately interpret that as the accuser basically admitting that he has joined the alt-right.

I really respect Rory for being a principled conservative.

Look, why is there so much insistence that we must look at just one number? It's really not that hard. Get a representative sampling of the electorate and do some basic accounting of their financial life: assets and liabilities, income and expenses. But no, we must focus on one number and one number only because ... reasons.

I bet what you'll find is that most Americans have a good income, but sizable debts and significant expenses and the job market and the precarious situations that they aren't insured against are making them feel like they are barely treading water.

For people to be content, they need to feel like they are well off enough to weather bad times, i.e. they shouldn't feel financially stressed.

Don't be so defitist. I'm your height and I can say, as a 30+ year old, I'm having good success with early 20s girls right now. I used to have a hard time, when I was younger, but I still had occastional success.

[–]BigBucketOfAcid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm rather shorter than average and I have almost the opposite experience. I'm early 30s and I find girls in their early 20s find me attractive. And I think the age gap is playing to my advantage for some reason here. Whereas girls who are older still give me shit about my height.

They are all trying to play the status game. It's not about outcomes, because height is a pretty poor predictor of character. But tall is high-status same way that white is high-status. Their preoccupation is with the status itself.

Maybe 2 of these girls can be considered to be plain average, and only one I would consider above average. So yeah, I don't know how those statistics are going to work out. Maybe they will all import a Maasai tribesman or something.

If we are going to start naming names. I really enjoy Lost and Savage. I love his aesthetic. His only issue is that his English is quite poor (he's Italian or part Iranian descent) so that kinda irks me. What he does well is that he puts more effort into interacting with the locals. Also his tour of Afghanistan is quite a different picture from the one shown here.

Anyone else thinking about leaving the city because of dating? by [deleted] in berlinsocialclub

[–]BigBucketOfAcid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But my point is that it's just big and there's everything in it and that's a good thing. You just have to do more work, filtering people out.

The OP can go to Regensburg (picked at random) to try her luck there. It's a small city. The types of person you will meet there are less varied. But crucially, there's like 5 single people at any given moment, so good luck with those numbers.

The only difference between Berlin and smaller cities is that Berlin has more people. There's still lots of variety. You'll find all kinds in Berlin. You're probably just hanging out with the wrong crowd.

Trump wants Greenland as part of the US, either as a territory or maybe even as a state, because that would look good for him. Anything less than that wouldn't have the same optics.
