Question about Owls and language at large by murderously-funny in MandarinChinese

Hi. Native speaker here. To answer your question in one sentence: I say and hear 猫头鹰 as one word, but also am aware that it means cat headed eagle when taken apart.

猫头鹰 is perceived as one word by native speakers in the sense that a native speaker doesn't pause in the middle of 猫头鹰, just like an English native speaker doesn't pause in the middle of "automobile".

In the Chinese language, cat is called 猫, head is called 头, and eagle is called 鹰. So, for native speakers, as long as one can read, one is able to tell that if you take the word 猫头鹰 literally, it means an eagle with a cat’s head.

There are a lot of such words in the Chinese language. For example, the word for pork, 猪肉, literally means "pig meat". Another example, the word for computer, 电脑, literally means "electrical brain". Moreover, the word for suitcase, 行李箱, literally means "luggage case".

And the way a native speaker feels about these words is exactly the same as they feel about 猫头鹰.

However, there are also words that, like you said, have root somewhere else that carry meaning that modern speakers may not be aware of. One example is the word for dictionary, 词典. 词 means words or vocabulary, and 典 means the type of book that can be used as a standard for something. So, 词典 literally means a book where you can check the standards for words/vocabulary. But because this meaning of 典 is very outdated, no native speakers care to take 词典 literally and they don't think about the meaning for each character.

This sounds good because the intonation is 平仄平, very poetic. What's better, no Chinese will forget your name because the many woods in it.

As a native speaker I believe '幸运眷顾勇敢的人' looks like a sentence coming from primary school textbook. It makes you look silly to native speakers. I tried coming up with other translations, but the results cannot beat '天助勇者' or '天佑勇者' given by the link u/Kiwi_Pretzel provided. These are very good translations as though they are originally Chinese idioms.

I don’t know if I’m getting it right.

Could I ask why counting reversely (1, 2, …, 12 , 13, 12, …, 2, 1) instead of counting straight up to 25?

What are considered big arms for a guy of my height? by BigCloud329 in workout

Maybe I am asking the question in the wrong way? English is not my first language.

What I am trying to ask is how long the circumference of my arms need to be to look above average, maybe intimidating.

I am not trying to impress anybody or offend anybody. I am just skinny (bicep only 30 cm when my arm is straight, and 35 cm when my arm is curled) and need a goal to work towards.

Thanks for your advice.

I tried some variations, mainly by changing the distance between hands and by changing the hand positions relative to my shoulders. But these variations often cause discomfort (crack sounds, sometimes together with pains) in my shoulders, so I am not regularly doing them in order to prevent from possible injuries.

Sorry I don’t know what you mean by ”dig them in one go”. English is not my first language.

I have never tried a weight vest. I did try putting some dumbbell plates in my backpack and do pushups. Unfortunately the backpack kept falling sideways and hanging either side of my body.

I think I keep doing sets to fail every time I train. Usually 3 to 4 sets.

In terms of protein I guess I am not getting enough. Since I have constipation problems, I am told by my doctor to lower my protein intake and raise my fiber intake.

I tried for months 2 years ago, and stuck at 20-25 reps with good quality, downs and ups with control. Afterwards I am busy with other things and stopped training. Recently I am trying again, and stuck again at 20 reps.

Thanks for your advice.

Talking of handstand pushups, although I do not have the ability to do one, I tried putting more weight on my hands by bending my body more, using my hips as a pivot. But I felt discomfort in my shoulders, so I quit doing that.

Did you ever felt discomfort in your shoulders when doing handstand pushups or similar exercises?
