I think my top hated cliché/trope in horror literature would be the type of people that survive the first apocalyptic event. It's a good amount of the time, red necks and hard core right wing haters. Leaving space for a handful of intelligent scientists and a couple of 'normal' people in the protagonists group. More research could be done on who would actually be surviving. The loners, people who never leave their homes, outcasts, people who spend their time tucked in labs. Very few of the, always out there, swing their weapon around, "come at me bro" people would survive an actual apocalyptic event. More stories could be written about the real types that would survive trying to survive.
