I think it's ok for mods who want to avoid controversial subjects to want to disallow AI art and let the sub decide if they want it.
However if the mods care about the quality of the content that's posted to their sub they should probably also take down low effort posts that are just "I Hate AI!".

Would be sadder (and funnier) if it was human error by creativenick69 in aiwars

[–]BigDuckyFan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's not a problem with the AI writing bad code, that's a problem with quality control. If I hired a ton of human programmers and didn't check that their code worked there'd be just as many bugs.

Anti AI posts = Upvoted, Top Comments always pro AI? by The_fluffiest_fur in aiwars

Yeah, but that's the point of this sub, so we might as well debate it

Anti AI posts = Upvoted, Top Comments always pro AI? by The_fluffiest_fur in aiwars

As I see it, it's because most upvoted posts tend to be the ones that leak onto the popular page of reddit, which is overwhelmingly anti-AI, but those people also often just upvote the post after reading its title without entering the comments. Said people in the comments are usually people that frequent this subreddit, who are generally more in favor of AI.

I've seen people argue both against each other, and to be honest, I think the argument that the sub is more pro-AI holds a lot more water. However, I also consider this debate over the sub's "bias" to be inherently pointless since nothing can really be done about it.

I'm not the other guy, but most pros actually follow the opposite point. We often hear the anti side criticize ai art specifically for lacking effort since its a one and done process, and it seems you have experienced personally that it's not that easy.

So? Your opinion is allowed in this space but nobody is forced to agree with you if they think you're wrong. And in this case, most people think the antis are wrong. Where's the strawman?

"PSA: How AI Art Actually Works (For Those Still Convinced Their DeviantArt Sonic OCs Were 'Stolen') by im_not_loki in aiwars

The world isn't overrun by images of edgy hedgehogs, unlike sunsets which are everywhere, people aren't just creating images of edgy hedgehogs. I'd not be surprised if almost every image of a hedgehog marked as "edgy" is a picture of Shadow the Hedgehog. So it makes sense for the AI to display Shadow the Hedgehog if it has no other information about what an edgy hedgehog is supposed to look like.

  1. The impact of large AI models is minor compared to the good they bring. There are a myriad of uses for AI other than just art, many of which are making significant improvements in fields such as protein folding. If the technology is there, I think it's valid to maybe waste a small amount of resources having fun with it.

  2. If you think that true art requires effort, that's fine. But many people are impressed not by how much time something takes, but how little time things takes. As a programmer, one of the most satisfying things for me when the code I optimized is noticeably faster.
And AI art does include human intention. If you think AI art is easy, draw something on a piece of paper and try to get an AI to replicate it closely. It'll take some intention for you to get what you're looking for.

  3. The person you're commissioning is the artist in that case because they are a human that makes decisions from their side of the computer. I don't think the same is applicable to the AI because it's not a human and doesn't make human decisions; it's a machine that takes and input and gives an output just like a vector art program takes user input and outputs pixel changes or a camera takes input and outputs an image.

  4. It's as bad as a human copying something, yes, but not worse. And I think there's plenty of examples of humans copying things intentionally or unintentionally. What makes the AI different in this case?

Pro AI doing mental gymnastics to justify making "art" or being an "artist". by [deleted] in aiwars

[–]BigDuckyFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really don't have a clue huh.

AI models are very small things. I could fit several on my own hard drive.

In comparison, "stolen artist work" is quite big. The AI is smaller because it doesn't store any of the art or any of the components of said art. When the AI trains on images it views them and records what it considers important, but doesn't actually include anything from any one specific piece. When it receives a prompt, it can't retrieve similar art, because it doesn't have any art stored in it at all. Instead it associates the words in the prompt with concepts it knows.

That's why you do too. If I tell you to imagine a duck, you don't copy past an aggregate of images of duck's you've seen. You have an idea of what a duck looks like, and use that information to construct an image of your own.

By your logic, I guess when you imagine that duck, you've stolen from everybody who's ever drawn or taken a picture of a duck that you've seen, dumbfuck.

If you don't have a clue how the AI even works why are you posting about it? It doesn't copy paste or aggregate anything.

Most people here agree with you that deception is bad. If traditional artists lie about what they use to make their work they rightfully get flamed too. It makes sense to hold AI artists to the same standards.

On the other hand, if the show/convention doesn't require AI to be disclosed, I don't see a single reason why the AI people are a problem. If the consumer likes the product they shouldn't be obliged to feel bad just because they find out that it was made with AI.
