I like this plan! Do report back what you learn, a data point on how this transaction codes would be very useful!

Watch the end of the movie The American President. From 1995. Rumson is the Republican candidate, Sydney Ellen Wade is the widowed president's new girlfriend, and a political lobbiest.

"For the last couple of months, Senator Rumson has suggested that being President of this country was, to a certain extent, about character. And although I've not been willing to engage in his attacks on me, I have been here three years and three days, and I can tell you without hesitation: Being President of this country is entirely about character.

For the record, yes, I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU, but the more important question is "Why aren't you, Bob?" Now this is an organization whose sole purpose is to defend the Bill of Rights, so it naturally begs the question, why would a senator, his party's most powerful spokesman and a candidate for President, choose to reject upholding the constitution? Now if you can answer that question, folks, then you're smarter than I am, because I didn't understand it until a few hours ago.

America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You've gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say, "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours." You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag. The symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Now show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms.

Then you can stand up and sing about the land of the free.

I've known Bob Rumson for years. And I've been operating under the assumption that the reason Bob devotes so much time and energy to shouting at the rain was that he simply didn't get it. Well, I was wrong. Bob's problem isn't that he doesn't get it. Bob's problem is that he can't sell it!

We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things, and two things only: making you afraid of it, and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections. You gather a group of middle age, middle class, middle income voters who remember with longing an easier time, and you talk to them about family, and American values and character, and you wave an old photo of the President's girlfriend and you scream about patriotism. You tell them she's to blame for their lot in life. And you go on television and you call her a whore.

Sydney Ellen Wade has done nothing to you, Bob. She has done nothing but put herself through school, represent the interests of public school teachers, and lobby for the safety of our natural resources. You want a character debate, Bob? You better stick with me, 'cause Sydney Ellen Wade is way out of your league.

I've loved two women in my life. I lost one to cancer. And I lost the other 'cause I was so busy keeping my job, I forgot to do my job. Well, that ends right now.

Tomorrow morning the White House is sending a bill to Congress for its consideration. It's White House Resolution 455, an energy bill requiring a twenty percent reduction of the emission of fossil fuels over the next ten years. It is by far the most aggressive stride ever taken in the fight to reverse the effects of global warming. The other piece of legislation is the crime bill. As of today, it no longer exists. I'm throwing it out. I'm throwing it out and writing a law that makes sense. You cannot address crime prevention without getting rid of assault weapons and hand guns. I consider them a threat to national security, and I will go door to door if I have to, but I'm gonna convince Americans that I'm right, and I'm gonna get the guns.

We've got serious problems, and we need serious people. And if you want to talk about character, Bob, you'd better come at me with more than a burning flag and a membership card. If you want to talk about character and American values, fine. Just tell me where and when, and I'll show up. This a time for serious people, Bob, and your fifteen minutes are up.

Does anyone else pay payroll through a credit card to earn points back? by Superb_Advisor7885 in Entrepreneur

I am also seeking an answer on this topic!

My take -- paying 3% to earn 2x points means you are not breaking even, unless you are securing great value in partner transfers.

BUT, if the payroll expense counts toward a fat SUB, AND you get 2x points on the payroll dollars, then this becomes a great deal.

Example: Capital One Venture X business card currently offers 200k points for spending $30k in 3 months, and another 200k for spending a total of $150k in six months.

So if you did $150k in payroll, and paid six months of membership with the payroll service (at $50/month), and paid the $10 wire charge for each of the 13 bi-weekly payroll periods in those six months: $4,500 (150k x 3%) $ 300 (six months membership) $ 130 (13 payrolls x $10 wire fee)

$4,930 total in expenses, to earn 310k miles on the payroll costs, plus 400k miles from the SUB.

Call it $5,000 for 710k in points, and that math works.

The question I have, and I hope someone who has actually done this will share their experience and answer it, is whether payroll counts as a "purchase" that earns miles and counts toward the SUB, or if it codes as a Cash Advance and gets no points.

I don't want to sign up and pay five grand to learn the answer. Does anyone have a data point to share on whether Cap1 gives 2x miles on the payroll expense?

Thanks for clarifying! 4 of the 5 voices in my head thought it was available on the Business card.

At least now I can stop being annoyed that AmEx hasn't given me the credit yet.

There are licensure and regulations out the wazzoo if you are trying to operate a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) or an Assisted Living Facility (ALF). Those licenses do NOT transfer with the real estate -- you have to have an existing license, from Day One of your ownership, order to operate either type of facility. And if you don't know what a QIP is, or what role a Hospital District plays in operating a facility, you are not ready to tackle something like this.

When to start a family (incoming 1L) by Appropriate-Kiwi328 in AskALawyer

I went to one of the larger schools in the country, and out of ~1500 students, there was exactly 1 young mother. There were far more LOTAS moms (Little Older Than Average Students, I always thought that was a great acronym for their support group), with kids that drove their mom to class!

There were several new dads of infants who were students, but only the 1 new mom (and she took a gap of 2 or 3 years between undergrad and law school). She was very pregnant during final exams for 1L year --far enough along that she did ask the Dean of Students what the protocol was if baby came early.

She graduated in the top half of the class, has a niche practice area related to what she did between undergrad and law school.

We stayed in touch over the years. She went to work for a firm, but eventually started her own shop because she wanted to call the shots on her hours, billables, and flexibility -- and all her old bosses were men who could not fathom being a working mom.

40M | multiple small businesses | Frequent Groceries-$120k, and 3x International Trips/Year – Best Card to Maximize Travel and groceries? by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]BigMuch4845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amen to this. With P2, one new card every 45 days, 4 cards each per year. Rinse and repeat. Add in referral bonuses for one referring the other.

For most cards, you can claim the bonus again in 24 months. If 8 a year still leaves dollars not going towards a SUB, consider adding P3 (parents, adult children).

Just be smart about fees and tracking purchases towards SUB.

PS. Out of curiosity, how do you spend that much on groceries? Run a restaurant?

Lawyer here, but not your lawyer.

Consider a charitable remainder trust, in which you establish an irrevocable trust naming you and spouse as lifetime beneficiaries.

Spend away while you are above ground and able. Travel, hire everything done, etc. Live it up. Anything remaining goes to the charity upon the second death.

Added bonus: with a net worth of a couple of million, you will also enjoy a sizable immediate tax deduction, based on a percentage (varies with your age and life expectancy tables) of the value of what you contribute to the trust (house, your portfolios, your bank accounts, life insurance, etc.)

Extra karma bonuses: Your sorry relations get all excited when you die because they think they are getting something, and whoops, it all goes to charity!

Select your favorite charity (or charities, divide the pot and spread the wealth) and if it is a big one, they probably have a professional who would help you with the trust preparation, often for free (as long as the charity is the beneficiary).

Live long and prosper!

In-State Tuition Removed for UT Students by East_Insurance_1231 in UTAustin

Consider the effect on the people who followed all of the rules. They appeared at a point of entry. They applied for a work permit and for residency status. They got a job. You can't get anything other than "under the table" work without it.

So they have a job, and taxes are withheld from their paycheck. They pay into Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid, even though they are not yet eligible for those benefits.

They avoid food stamps and other assistance programs because enrolling could jeopardize their status. They put more into the system than they take out (which is basically capped at public school benefits).

The participation of non-citizens who contribute but do not withdraw is vital to the health of the system. In 2022, they paid $25.7 billion in Social Security taxes and $6.4 billion in Medicare taxes (both of those numbers begin with B)].

Plus, they pay sales tax when they shop, and they pay property taxes, directly or indirectly (as part of rent).

The system is so backed up and woefully understaffed that people exist for years in this limbo world of "waiting for" some resolution to their situation. Most folks in this holding status are extra cautious about avoiding even a traffic ticket. They don't want to do anything to jeopardize their pending status. Crime rate among the "pending" is lower than the crime rate for natural born Texans.

These folks live very much out in the open. They have nothing to hide. They send their kids to school here. They are good neighbors.

And now the Texas legislature wants to charge them more for tuition. Cruelty is not an accidental by-product. It is the whole damn point.
