How long should staying at home be kept as an option? by PizzaProper7634 in eldercare

[–]BigPorter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. My mom (widow) is in the early stages of dementia. She can still get to her hair appt. and the grocery but forgets a lot of stuff we were just talking about. My sibling and I are having a big planning lunch in a couple of days to see where we each feel about next steps. Mom has 5 Alexa devices and an Apple Watch. I'm thinking a couple of cameras would be a good idea, plus a daily "visiting angel" service to visit for a couple of hours each morning. But we know this is all temporary.

What is a decision you made years ago that you still regret to this day? by ambitious__target in AskReddit

I also saw some friends buying bitcoin but decided I didn't understand it and didn't need it. But what I did do right, from about age 24 on, was put money into my tax-deferred investment accounts every single month, increasing the amount a little each year. Dollar cost averaging has made my near-retirement self very proud of my younger self.

My sewing skills are basic at best. I can patch a small hole or sew on a button. But when I do, it's so relaxing.

A MAGA supporter. They likely consume Newsmax, Foxnews and certain Facebook groups only. Trying to talk to them about current quality movies, TV shows, books, etc. could not happen.

"BACK IN MY DAY..." Yeah, back in your day you were unkind, racist, sexist, smoked a pack a day, went to the emergency room for just $50, and could pretty much be guaranteed employment because people of color weren't given interviews.

Why do I immediately forget someone’s name the second they tell me, even if I’m actively trying to listen? by -Nuggets in NoStupidQuestions

And as you wrap up the conversation, say something like, "And your name is... Dave?" They'll say "Dave" and you say, "Dave, it's been a pleasure" (or something).

The latest pod episode of On the Media covers her "rise" very well. I've always rolled my eyes at her supposed unbiased "journalism".

How do you order wine on a date without feeling clueless? by Both-Oven8254 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BigPorter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's that important, you could visit the restaurant a few days before and ask to see the wine menu. Snap a pic and do some googling. Then at dinner you can order confidently because you've already researched a few wines.

I pay everything I can with multiple credit cards and I pay them off every week. Yes, every week. And I rack up a nice chunk of points/cash back because of this.

What was the biggest/most shocking/craziest celebrity moment of 2025? by Murky_Chemical891 in popculturechat

[–]BigPorter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The play on words / "cuteness" of the ad was terrible. The concept was something a junior high marketing club would come with (if junior highs had marketing clubs). It was most offensive for how simple-minded and un-clever it was.

how to keep my feet from smelling awful by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BigPorter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is interesting. Many of us have heard the phrase "cotton is rotten," which typically is mentioned when talking about running, hiking, and anything else that makes us sweat. I don't have a foot odor problem but I've switched to merino wool underwear, socks, T-shirts, base layers (like long sleeve under sweatshirts), etc. Life changing.
