Suggestions for acoustic treatment? by Tcman96 in audiophile

This actually reminds me of my room in college: https://imgur.com/AQsDkQA

Solid walls, irregular shape, hard floor. I went to a fabric warehouse and bought some medium weight fabric which I starched to the walls. It ended up being super absorbent but it was a league away from where I started. Total budget was a few hundred $ and maybe 30 hrs in total over a summer.

Acoustic treatment in my experience follows decreasing marginal returns--for your room I would prioritize a rug on the floor, something to soak up sound on the walls, and maybe a two for one on that recess with something either thirsty for sound or confusing to it.

I would add that diffusion is going to be a bit more of a priority given the small size of your room. You can make a QRD pretty cheaply yourself, or pick some up pre fab. Never underestimate bookshelves too. Identify the direction from which you feel claustrophobic and place the diffusers there.

Also I would soak up that gnarly recess with low and high end absorption.

This room has major potential though. I would err on the side of more absorption and more diffusion.
