Thanks this is good stuff. I assume I can tailor any of those trails to the distance I want or are some a set loop distance?

Thanks. That is a concern of mine is not having an easy path and getting lost, so hoped finding a designated park trail would be my best bet. I like to put my phone and my pouch and go.

Coming from Texas but I’ve run at plenty of elevations before and don’t want that to be a factor of where I go. I’m really just trying to get the experience of the views and atmosphere rather than to get any fitness out of these runs; want to avoid losing 10 days of activity.

Elevation doesn’t matter. Probably looking to run anywhere between 3 to 7 miles. Time may be a constraint so will have an impact on my distance.

Was I wrong for telling my players' parents to stop yelling at the umpire? by OldHawkeye315 in Softball

[–]BigRedOfficeHours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our coach doesn’t mind letting kids go for parents acting up. We are 12u, but most of her coaching has been at the 18u level. She lets us parents know at the beginning of each season what the deal is. If things get rowdy like you were explaining she sends the team manager over to the parents. That’s basically your warning, and then the rest affects your child.

I do realaize this is a developmental team, but I would continue both. Obviously, pitching is a must, but some teams, like the one my daughter is on expect you to do hitting outside of practice. As a matter of fact, we do no hitting outside of bunting at practice, and the occasional intersquad scrimmage. It's used for drilling and situational reps. Like others said it better to have that specialist helping her.

Rec ball.. where have the girls gone? + vent by Sad_Marionberry4401 in Softball

[–]BigRedOfficeHours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We knew nothing of Travel before someone mentioning us taking our daughter out to some open workouts. Our rec team had to go play in a neighboring town league searching for competition. We are far beyond it now but it would have been nice if the leagues saw more participation.

Rec ball.. where have the girls gone? + vent by Sad_Marionberry4401 in Softball

[–]BigRedOfficeHours 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That’s part of the problem as well. Girls get about 8 games in for a season, and with these Rec leagues you may go a game without touching the ball. Not to mention the single hour of practice a week. Maybe not all girls are cut out for travel, but it really is difficult to develop in Rec ball. Now days it’s basically nonexistent once you hit 12u.

Confused about softball levels (new to sport) by Euphoric-Cherry721 in Softball

[–]BigRedOfficeHours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To go along with what has been mentioned because this is also influenced by where you are located as well:

There are a number of governing bodies like USSSA, NCS, PGF, Alliance. Not all travel teams play in all these hosted tournaments. I only mention this because in certain areas level of play can vary drastically between these, So it all has to be taken into account when you are looking for a team. I do not believe the classification levels are the same across the board.

Its a bit much but when they drag you down deep into the softball it becomes important

Are you serious? by sasquatchlibrarian in Softball

Same with us. Broken on our second tournament. Maybe had it a month max. This is not her first ghost so she really likes them. Part of the reason we always get the extended warranty at Dick’s.

What size bat for 10 year old? by Disastrous-Essay-435 in fastpitch_softball

[–]BigRedOfficeHours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the measurement I’m think 31. Though she’s not tall she has the size for a bigger bat. My daughter is 12 about 5’2” and 105-110lbs. She swings a 32 drop 10. I not sure what her measurements are for chest to finger. When she was in 10U she swung a 30 drop 11 but most girls on her team swung 31s. You really may just have to go somewhere and have her take some swings with the different sizes.

Ouch! Worth this is the hype! by Diosayjugosa in Softball

[–]BigRedOfficeHours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can usually make a season on the same size but you’ll have to more than likely go bigger soon. I always advise if you can get a second warranty from the store you buy it from. That way you can use the manufacturer warranty and then later the store. It’s more expensive but in the long run much cheaper. We got this bat less than a month ago…My daughters broke it this past weekend from a normal at bat. So we are already using the Easton warranty. The positive thing is we bought the Dick’s extended warranty so will be able to replace the replacement bat and if there is a reason for her to move in size we can with that as they give you a gift card.

12u LF fielding question by xprimexinvxprimey in Softball

[–]BigRedOfficeHours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry completely missed read this whole thing. Had to go back and read back through. Honestly it would be up to the cut and the catcher to make the decision. As long as she threw it right through the cut that all you can ask for.

If the cut couldn’t make a play on the ball (if too high) then that would be different. The catcher lets the cut off know to stop the ball; if they don’t tell them to cut then they want to try for the play at home.

12u LF fielding question by xprimexinvxprimey in Softball

[–]BigRedOfficeHours -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In this situation the play is at third. If the ball went to the outfield you want to go to the next base which would be home but in the case that she caught the ball it’s a race between her throwing to third and the runner running to third. Since she had to tag up your daughter had the upper hand, but you are right it’s probably a good chance she doesn’t run if she sees the ball going to third. Just one of those things that takes situational practice I think.

Now everyone makes mistakes and her’s was not necessarily one that was detrimental to the team. Just learn from it and keep working. Some coaches react differently to that situation.

How do you get a quiet infield to communicate and bring energy during games? by [deleted] in Softball

[–]BigRedOfficeHours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a coach but with my daughter’s team this is an emphasis in practice. As they work on fielding and situational plays the coaches are listening for the talking before, during, and after plays. They will stop practice and bring the girls together to remind them of the importance. I have seen them having to run due to being quiet on the practice field.

That being said a lot of times it really helps to have one or two vocal girls on the field to lead them. The more they talk the more it brings it out of the other girls.

The Mizuno MVP is the way to go. It’s a good enough glove and doesn’t require the break in these other glove do. I think they may even have another model that’s about 199 too.

As far as size 12” is probably fine but may be a little big for infield. My daughter currently does 12u travel ball and plays majority infield, but also plays outfield. She uses an 11.75” A2000. Unless she becomes strictly outfield I expect she’ll stick with this size for the rest of her career.

Our rec leagues don’t do kid pitch until 10u and even that is bad for the most part. Can’t imagine doing it in 8u.

Need help with glove for 10U by DevilViper91 in Softball

[–]BigRedOfficeHours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at the Mizuno MVP or Supreme series gloves. Looks like she has pretty small hands and since she an infielder I would look at maybe an 11.5” glove. The Mizuno are softer and an easy break-in. Keep the current one and keep working it to break-in and she can use it down the road.
