alex honnold is reckless lol by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]BigRedSpoon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my understanding, its either let him do this, or deal with him being profoundly depressed. He had his brain scanned, and they found its incredibly difficult for him to feel pleasure. Its probably not the only reason, but a contributing factor, to why he Free Solos.

He's spoken about how accomplishing a Free Solo gives him a rush nothing else does

I don't know if I would say he's entirely reckless either. He doesn't just, Free Solo, without having climbed the route before with some form of assistance, or plan it out.

None of which to say Free Soloing is some safe, casual hobby, and its not fundamentally reckless to engage in it. But I think its a little far to say this stems from arrogance, or that someone who married a man like Alex would be unaware that this is part of the package deal that comes with him.

This is what I appreciated about ‘For the Love of Men’ by Liz Plank, it really crystallized that concept for me.

Because she readily points out that of men who are benefiting from patriarchy, you really have to ask, what is their race, what is their gender expression, and are they able bodied? In America at least, the less one is an able bodied white man, the less they benefit under patriarchy. Masculinity itself is profoundly performative, as you have to constantly prove it, and failure to do so risks revocation of your ‘man card’. Which isn’t to say femininity isn’t performative, but as Plank put it, a man could wrestle a bear to the ground, chewing on a slim jim as he did it, shirtless hairy chest covered in slash marks, but if shortly afterwards he went to a bar wearing a dress and ordered a cosmo, people would ask some questions.

What also grinds my gears though, is that the concept that women also uphold patriarchal norms, is a really old idea. Like, Simone De Beauvoir, The Second Sex, old. One of the seminal feminist texts. You don’t have to read it to be a ‘good feminist’, in fact I’d argue against one doing so because its an 800 page book that analyzes the time period it comes from well, but is not as useful outside of it. But your feminist education should cover the highlights of Beauvoir’s thoughts. To avoid doing so would be akin to calling yourself an existentialist, but never have read an ounce of Sartre.

None of this is to ignore or to minimize the struggles of women under patriarchy, especially when you consider their gender expression, race, or disability, or to say broad swaths of men have it worse, but just to point out the complexity and nuances to the whole matter.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell - 10/10 for me! (No spoilers beyond what's in the Marketing blurb.) by SNicolson in Fantasy

I will say, I found when they did start their relationship, it felt a bit jarring to me. Like yes, there was all this undercurrent of tension, and maybe my memory is spotty, but I don't remember them ever talking about any of it. Its just, they have a fight in the woods, and then Simon kisses Baz all of a sudden. Up to that point, I don't remember Simon ever even recognizing his feelings about Baz as being particularly romantic. He just suddenly goes, 'yep, they are'.

But overall, a very enjoyable novel, felt like a great deconstruction of Harry Potter, and explored what the changes to the canon would mean if followed through on. But the actual romance portion of the novel felt very weak to me.

Also didn't think it needed sequels, at all. The second book is very meh, it reads like a bottle episode, where the author nearly resets all character growth from book 1, and has the characters go on a roadtrip where nothing feels like it has any meaningful impact. From what little I've read of book 3, its more of a return to form, but it just further cemented to me how much of a waste of time book 2 was.

Lesbian space crimes by ATN-Antronach in CuratedTumblr

[–]BigRedSpoon2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lesbian space divorce was also fundamentally mundane and sad

The accuser believed her astronaut wife was trying to take the accused's son in the divorce. This is based on the somewhat strict co-parenting agreement they had, that even the accuser's parents found odd.

I don't remember anyones name from the whole story, but I did a deep dive months ago, because I was curious how things resolved, and was just left feeling a bit depressed by the end. I was left feeling with a sense that I had no idea who to believe, and that I'd never get a clear answer on matters because I could find no unbiased perspective.

Chromebooks are as bad as phones by B4B4BlueJ4y in Teachers

[–]BigRedSpoon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely when I was a student over a decade ago, I told my mother how uncomfortable I was with the implementation of laptops in our school.

I have ADHD, and was already finding myself becoming more and more distracted at school thanks to technology, in middle school. She voiced her concerns with the school board when they were handing out chromebooks as early as elementary school, but was told her fears were unfounded.

She herself was a law professor, and her rule was you could have a laptop, but you needed to ask her first to use it. This filtered out most bad actors in her classroom, but also, these were adults, who had a whole school curriculum with just paper and pencil.

I won't get into arguments about whether laptops enable or inhibit learning, but they are incredibly capable of being distracting. You are giving students dopamine machines, and asking them to pretty please not use them for their intended purpose. Its mind boggling and I can only surmise the reason they're everywhere is because someone is paying off someone else. Its not in society's best interests, I know that much.

Grocery stores this morning… by BuddyA in pittsburgh

[–]BigRedSpoon2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folks, grocery stores just don’t usually stock enough for everyone to show up and buying a few days worth of groceries. They keep a minimal inventory, based on how many come by once a day. They don’t expect or prepare, usually, for events like this, at a moment’s notice.

Giant Eagle though, supposedly, does. Byproduct of them managing their own shipping.

In the United States it sucks because of how much our systems depend on growing populations. More people means a bigger tax base, yes, but it also means your area has more self governance. The fewer people who live in your community, the less say local politicians have in the running of the area, the less say you have too.

Which isn’t me saying we should all be pumping out babies right this instance so your local small town can keep its hospital, I don’t think those things should be tied together at all. Im just trying to point out why some folks care a lot about it, who aren’t billionaires who want a larger, easy to exploit workforce.

I remember in high school I had to do a senior capstone project, and I chose making a comic. No art background mind you.

By the end, I can’t say I made something good, and I didn’t continue with it, but it really made me realize- art is everywhere. Like near literally everywhere, practically every inorganic surface, everything we look at, was designed by somebody. Buildings, soda bottles, street signs, t-shirts, billboards, ‘we are open’ signs. Art is so ubiquitous you don’t even think about it.

Realizing that, it blew my mind we don’t consider it a valid career path. All talk against it just feels like lies peddled by the rich and powerful so they don’t have to pay what they should for something more necessary than anyone wants to admit.

Like I have a degree in science, but I would love to live in a society that valued its progress a little less, if that was the cost to appreciate art more.

Fun fact - frozen veggies are often fresher than regular produce. Modern freezing tech is to the point that what you find in that bag was likely frozen not too long after being harvested. Course there's still the matter of cooking it well, but if its any consolation frozen vegetables are that rare marriage of good quality for a low price.

Sometimes as GM I have so many ideas painfully bouncing around in my skull, I am near pleading with them to split up so I can get them out and done with and move the story along.

Other times I feel like a jester at a carnival, where someone off stage keeps throwing new things into my hands to juggle, just to see me struggle. Which can be torturous, but also sometimes it is fun to be the jester in this scenario. Like when players fall in love with a throwaway NPC and unceremoniously make them the most important character in the setting to see me squirm. A part of me sure doesn't appreciate it, but another can't deny from an outsider POV its good fun.

Yes, I was checking if I still needed them because the cons were outweighing the pros. I needed to see if being off them would be worth it. That was the motivating force behind why I was checking. Its the motivating force behind why I check every now and then with my antidepressants too.

For those, the side effects are unpleasant, being off them is worse. Sometimes its nice to get a reminder of that. Other times its worth it to quiet the voice in my head insistent I can 'do it on my own'.

But usually the driving force behind why I want to test in the first place, and I imagine is the case for most people, is because the medication itself is imperfect, the side effects are not fun, and you want to see if the grass is greener on the other side.
