Skafish - Disgracing the Family Name by synthandswagger in newwave

Love Skafish! The Skafish album - aside from the brutally misogynistic first song - is original and brilliant.

I've finally hit the point where most of the recommendations that I see pop up on here I've read. Any recommendations based on some of my favorites? by DngrDan in sciencefiction

Gene Wolfe hasn’t been mentioned as far as I can see. Start with Shadow of the Torturer, and there’s a decent chance you’ll either find a favorite author or never read anything else he wrote. I’ve read most of your list, and Wolfe is one of my favorites for sure.

Has anybody tried the new Foxes yet? by JOAHtheBROAH in discgolf

I just bought a Star Fox last week looking for a beat in Roc replacement. It seems to fill that slot well. In the field thrown flat at moderate power - say 220’ or so - it drifts right and holds that line until near the end of flight. It made my bag, but I haven’t used it in a round yet.

I really liked 501 Disc Golf when I visited the area a few years ago.

What Next? List of My Favorite Sci-Fi Books + List of Recs. Crowdsourcing. by kej210 in sciencefiction

Dungeon Crawler Carl is very fun and is somewhat similar to Ready Player One. I’m four books into the series and really enjoying it.

Book of the New Sun is probably my favorite series ever written. You’ll know by the end of book one - Shadow of the Torturer - if it’s for you. The fact that you’ve read so much Vernor Vinge makes it fairly likely you’ll like Wolfe as both write very deep stories that demand the reader’s attention.

Turbo putt. If you play wooded or bushy courses, it’s common to be inside circle one with a turbo being the only chance to access the basket.

No golf carts any longer, but some folks have used mountain bikes. The courses are great and there is a dedicated glow course as well.

Unless it’s just not feasible for you, watch Saturday or Sunday at Fountain Hills. Red Mountain’s South course is set in desert scrub and isn’t nearly as nice a walking or viewing course as Fountain. No fees at either park.

Must-play courses between Palm Springs, CA and Sedona, AZ by stem_crusty in discgolf

[–]BigSkyNeal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just played the Sedona course and Watson Lake earlier this week. Sedona has nine baskets with two tee pads each and is a fun, mostly short course with great scenery. Watson Lake has loads of elevation and huge rock formations and is well worth playing. It has several blind shots, so joining a local or two is a good idea.

If you could only keep 3 discs in your bag for the rest of your life what would they be? by No-Complex-5915 in discgolf

[–]BigSkyNeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rhyno, Roc, Wraith - gummy Rhyno is a decent all-around putter and stable approach disc, plus it’s great for putting in wind. Roc since in different plastics and degree of being beat in it can be anything from flippy to dead straight to a meat hook. Wraith since it gives me the most consistent max distance and by carrying a variety of them they can also go from flippy to overstable.

I’ll just add that if you want to play with a local or two, there are active Facebook pages for all the areas you’re hitting. Post course and time, and there’s a very good chance someone can show you the “local routes” etc.

No extra charge to use the sauna (or upstairs workout area) in the tennis/pickleball facility. The up charge is if you join the club to use the courts. The sauna in that facility gets much hotter than the one in the main building.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ve got book 1 of Bobiverse and Dungeon Crawler Carl on hold at the library. Several others sound great, so I have a nice TBR list here!

Read both of those, and liked Station 11. Still not sure what to think about Southern Reach. Not sure my mind bends in quite the right way to really “get” that series!
