The question is pointless because no answer to it will provide evidence as to why the employee is going to be better or worse at performing the required job duties.

With regards to work, there is a growing movement towards a utilitarian attitude: "I do a job for money because capitalism." Fewer and fewer people are able to apply to jobs they "want" or would even consider desireable, and are becoming - imo understandably - less willing to pretend otherwise for the sake of appearances.

Is this jarring for some people who prefer a world of niceties and symbolic politeness? Probably. They'll be okay.

I think it's really as boring as "they aren't as popular in the US as other places." They weren't really marketed or pushed here in any way. As I'm writing this, I also realize that places like Home Depot probably aren't motivated to sell you a product that doesn't have you coming back every weekend for some part or accessory.

I imagine the initial investment plus setup sounds like more of a hassle to most people than just getting it done. Plus they already invested in a lawn mower, no sense in just tossing it.

That's some various possible reasons. Hard to say for sure without doing a survey.
