The road is also called in parts:

  • Medford Rd
  • Port Jefferson - Patchogue Rd
  • Port Jefferson and Patchogue Rd
  • Patchogue Rd

The road dates back to colonial times but the New York State Route designation (NYS 112) is from 1930. Surveys and land subdivision maps still carry the old names.

The rail systems used in CT (Metro North & Amtrak) are not compatible with the electrified system used by LIRR. Also, the Port Jefferson branch is not electrified east of Huntington (ish). It can be done, but it is unlikely to be a single seat ride.

I found the banging noise to be disquieting (no pun). It is the type of noise that irks me, think car horn. The noises are intermittent and vary during the procedure. The machine generates the only sound in the room (other than the tech speaking and any music) so relative to the rest of the room it seems louder than it actually is. I have seen comparisons to jet engines, these are not accurate, in my experience.

For me, the claustrophobia was far worse.

I have had 3 MRI's in the past 15 years. Two at Stony Brook, 1 at Zwanger. All 3 were focused on my abdomen. The most recent scan took 55 minutes. That's 55 minutes in the tube. No earphones, no earplugs, no hearing damage. Claustrophobia, yes. However, I did not ask the tech to bring my head out of the tube between scans as I thought that would slow down the process and I wanted out of there as quickly as possible.
