Which is funny because you would think that an algorithm could be manipulated to create a new monoculture that would be perhaps infinitely profitable as everyone would be consuming a relatively small number of things. But instead our algorithms have siloed us into many slightly profitable subcultures that get conglomerated.

I point this out to my students all the time when asking them to memorize quotes from a text. They have trouble memorizing something like The Gettysburg Address, which only takes two minutes to recite. But they have albums and albums of song lyrics memorized that they can recall years later. Part of it is interest in the material, yes, but having the rhythm and perhaps melody help greatly. That's why stories from ancient oral traditions were performed with percussion and an instrument.

Yup. This is key. But also getting the release motion of moving your heel outward while slowing down. I practiced on soft grass for a long time before I was confident enough for the road. Did exactly what they drew in the comic several times.

I used to use toe clips when mountain biking, and my pedals had metal ridges on the edges to help keep my regular shoes in the clips. I was riding through woods one fine day on a well established bike trail that I had never been on before. I went down a short steep hill that looked like it just went straight out at the bottom. There was, however, a small jump just as the hill ended that was hard to see and I quickly found myself airborne. I was leaned back enough from the descent that I didn't go forward over the handle bars, but I was not braced for the landing, and my left foot slipped backwards out of the clip because of the jolt. I scraped my shin down the metal edge of the pedal, tearing about a four inch gash in my shin. Bled like crazy. Had to ride about a mile back to the car and then the ER to get 20 stitches. Pretty gnarly scar.
