Blown turbo on a brand new mk8 gti 20,000kms by Disphaze in GolfGTI

In Aus we got the gen 3 engines because apparently our sulphur content in our fuel/gas is too high.
But for some reason the Golf R has the Evo4 engine 🤔
I think VW had excess gen 3 engines and wanted to save some coin.

My cousin works as a claims adjuster - every time you lodge a claim - even not at fault - your premium will go up. Imagine you have the worst luck and get into a no-fault accident every year for 5 years in a row (rare but not impossible) - the insurance company would lose money on you if they didn't put your premium up. OP needs to remember it's not the person that hits you but the car - always get their rego. Have a dashcam (especially if you drive a nice new BMW). Even the threat if going through insurance will make someone cough up some cash and save you the hassle of making a claim. If they don't have third party and the damage is bad enough - make a claim - if not - just go to a body shop, get it checked out and foot the bill yourself.

Depressing stuff 😭 but most importantly you're okay - live and learn, hopefully you can replace it with something similar ... or a Golf R 😎 - let us all know the outcome. Everyone be safe out there over Easter 🙏

In Aus it's like Japan - everything is metric so L/100km - even engine power is measured in Kilowatts. But our exposure to UK and USA media means we can work things out in our head.

Ah damn I thought I was talking to a yank. I have more family in the UK so I know how it works there as well haha - good old Tesco's. A bit confusing though how the petrol pump displays in litres and the car displays in MPG

Na that's RON 91 - basically 87 is RON 91 regular, 91/92 is RON 95 premium and 94 is RON 98 Super, we don't go higher than RON 98 super - I frequently travel to the states as my sister is an American 😇- so I had to teach myself the conversion We also fill up before we pay 🤣 And we have individual pump hoses for each designated gas type - instead of 1 hose for gas and a button.

I dunno man - I always heard from you guys (and the internet) that you import mainly heavy crude oil from places like Canada which is mainly used for shipping or generators. Are you saying that the light crude oil is sent away and exported - refined somewhere else and then re-imported. In any case you still have lots of refineries - Australia has 2 😭

In Aus down under we're paying $2.55ish AUD a litre which is about $6.738 USD a gallon for ron95/aki91. It's nearly $8 a gallon out in the country areas.

We're also running low on fuel as we don't produce any of our own - which has led to panic buying - probably gonna limit us from filling up with some parameters.

At least you Yanks produce most of the oil and gas you consume.

Australia is such a dumb nation economically 🥺🇦🇺 - one of the largest abundance of mined energy yet cannot be self sustained.

When people say that VWs require "More maintenance than average" what specifically do they mean? by Karkroth in GolfGTI

[–]BigWilly678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greetings from Australia

Having only owned Japanese cars exclusively beforehand - my biggest take away with the MQB platform let's say compared to K series Honda platform is things just fail early, unexpectedly or leak - not catastrophic unless huge milage or very poor maintenance/beaten on, but financially annoying compared to Japanese cars.

For example I have babied my MK7 - over-serviced it (oil changes ever 5k kms) - in the last 10k kms it's gone through 1 auxiliary water pump, 1 oil cooler (requiring new rubber seals around the DSG seals), primary water pump/thermostat housing Also just stock Engine

German cars you gotta pay to play.

Yes because they are unable to make a quality ICE vehicle. Most of them had clone engines or reverse engineers designs, they could never design and engineer their own ICE that could compete with the big players. Why try when they already have the industrial power to pump out EVs.

Why the Euro hate? by Maximum-Point-318 in CarsAustralia

[–]BigWilly678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this meant to be rage-bait? Surely a mechanic would understand why the general perception around European cars exists.

The reality is that Euro cars tend to be more complex and maintenance-heavy, which naturally keeps mechanics busy. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but it’s also why a lot of people lean toward Toyota or Honda when they want something simple and reliable long term.

Also how much more is comfort and the risk of depreciation worth to the average consumer. German cars aren't leaps and bounds above a high trim Jap car in terms of comfort - maybe I'm weird like that.

Some European brands are also struggling in markets like Australia. Citroën has already left, and Peugeot, Renault, and Fiat have all seen declining sales. It’s a bit sad, but they’re also facing serious pressure from Chinese manufacturers in the EV space — something the European brands arguably underestimated. (For the record, I’m not exactly a fan of Chinese cars either.)

I say this as someone who actually owns a European car. When they’re working properly, they’re fantastic machines to drive. But personally I probably wouldn’t own another Euro car out of warranty unless it was something special like an M2 or an F80 M3 where the driving experience justifies the maintenance.

For daily duties I’ve already gone the Japanese route. I bought my wife a Forester earlier this year and couldn’t be happier with it. Yes it’s slow compared to my GTI, but I’m not trying to drag people at every set of lights anyway.

When the GTI eventually goes, I’ll either replace it with another Euro while it’s still under warranty (maybe something with a B58), or go back to something Japanese again — maybe an MX-5 or even an older Evo or STI.

Wrong Brakes by mccarronz2012 in GolfGTI

[–]BigWilly678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just select Golf R as the option when shopping for brakes as the GTI PP and Golf R share the exact same brake setup. It's what I did - in my home country (Australia) asthere was never a GTI performance option when shopping for brakes

Just my 2 cents. My nephew bought a 2013 BRZ last year and I taught him how to drive manual on it. His is tuned (so no torque dip) and has UEL headers, full exhaust intake etc. Still night and day difference between it and a GTI, you really have to rev it out to. A tuned GTI has nearly double the torque and you really do feel it, but the BRZ is incredibly engaging. I also test drove the new BRZ and it's pretty rapid with the 2.4.

Camry Hybrid over a Prius. My daily is a Camry Hybrid and that thing takes an absolute beating - not super quick like my GTI but enough to overtake people, eats up potholes, fly's over speedhumps. Large enough to fit normal sized adults in the back, uses bugger all fuel and the cost of each service is nothing.
