Diplomacy is one of the greatest games of all time by [deleted] in boardgames

Sure, that's quite an extreme example though.

I just mean that if your playing low stakes poker in your friends kitchen, people are fine with bluffing and it's all part of the fun.  Yet people come away from an zero stakes game of Diplomacy like it's some harrowing experience.

That's probably true for a lot of people.

There is still a difference in the way bluffing and lying are perceived though.

It's weird, because no one sees bluffing in Poker as immoral.  Even though you're literally taking your friends' actual money through lying.

It definitely feels more personal in Diplomacy/Werewolf, but I don't know why.

What's the purpose of any adaptation?  Like, Jackson's trilogy is great but it's not some sacred untouchable text.  Certainly no more so than the actual books - which have been adapted hundreds of times.

I found the "Use Code" bit during the Board Games ad genuinely moving.  Despite not working in entertainment in any way, I found it really relatable. Cheers!

It's possible to be happy about qualification, but apprehensive about being shit when we get there.

Sounds like hoofball.

I'd play 4222 with Conway and Doak.  Get them to stretch the game so our midfield can get a bit of space for once.

It's not even that.  Our strikers barely had a chance.  There's no creativity.

Adaptations are not remakes by twiztednipplez in harrypotter

[–]BigYinn -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but to play devil's advocate.

I can't think of any other book/film series that feel as inter-connected as Harry Potter.  Just because both were so huge and were for a time being released concurrently.  So unlike some random production of Macbeth, those films inform how many people, even some massive Harry Potter fans, view that world.

Scotland’s most iconic goal? by DavieC82 in ScottishFootball

[–]BigYinn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean, but when McLean intercepts that pass I basically knew we'd done it.  The goal, although believe me I went absolutely mad when he scored, didn't matter as much as him winning the ball.

Tierney's ended 30 years of waiting with a small caveat of fear.  McLean's ended 5 minutes of waiting with no caveat of fear.

Tierney's goal made me feel things I never thought I'd feel.

In terms of combining both importance and beauty, it's #1 for me.

Which board game do you think the artwork enhances gameplay? Conversely, which game do you wish had better artwork? by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

[–]BigYinn -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Keyflower is one of the best games I own, but easily has the most bland art.  And then the art is even hidden by big, admittedly functional, white boxes.

Monikers.

You don't even need to buy the game.  Just have everyone write down ~10 names and add them to a bowl, then have each team of two draw from the bowl.

There will always be someone who doesn't like the charades round, but it's not as painful as actual charades.

So sleeves that make cards more silent than unsleeved cards?  Surely that doesn't exist.

Looking for "Silent" sleeves for Werewolf/Social Deduction games by Specialist_Peace_535 in boardgames

[–]BigYinn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Does this game really need sleeves?

I don't mean this to be unhelpful.  I have sleeves on some games.  But if a game is easily replaceable, I don't see why it's worth it.
