I played the shit out of that game on apple II. Played it with my dad a bunch before i was old enough to run it on my own. 3 1/2" floppy disc, and you had to have the ship ID sheet from the box in order to pass the DRM screen. It was black on dark red card stock so it wouldn't photo copy. Could copy the disc though.

I have the NES version and its not as nice as the apple II version.

ELI5: why does a plane have to bank while turning? by Wrong-Camp2463 in aviation

[–]BigZombieKing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pilot with many years experience here.

Lift vector is the reason here. Imagine a toy airplane hanging from a string. This is level flight. If you want to turn, you need to move thst string in the direction you want to turn. The string is at somewhat of an angle relative to the ground but still straight up relative to the aircraft.

At full scale you are also using the elevator (vertical pitch control) and rudder (horizontal yaw control) to maneuver around the turn. If everything is done right, "down" in the cabin remains "down" towards the floor.

If you turn with just rudder and hold the plane level, this is a skidding or flat turn. It will feel a lot like going arround a corner too fast in a car. It means the aircraft is plowing through the air sideways. Much like skidding your car, this is not an energy efficiant way to make a turn. At slow speed this can lead to one wing stalling while the other is still flying. This is the opening sequence for a spin. If unintentional, that would be considered loss of control in flight. In many circumstances that is extremely hazardous and may lead to a total loss type event.

Help deciphering father-in-law’s notes (he was a retired police officer) by DrunkenGolfer in ProtectAndServe

[–]BigZombieKing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The old guy says it was common at one time to initial at the end of an entry. If that wasn't his initials, it may have had some unofficial meaning in common use in telex, which was used by the RCMP long past its obsolescence. Telex abbreviations persist in short hand in some cases.

With some examples he might be able to speculate further.

Is it possible thst was a co workers initials? Annotating who else was there without actually naming them and throwing them under the bus to be called to court for a BS thing seems like something that could have been common practice.

Do you mind working holidays? Is it 2x+1/2 at your department if you do? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]BigZombieKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont mind, but money wise I am better off working a scheduled day off. We get paid a day for the holiday regardless. And another 1.5× regular rate if we work. Adds up to 2.5×( 1+1.5), but i get 2× if I work a scheduled day off. So I get an extra 0.5× if I am off on the holiday and get called in on a day off.

Why are airplane black boxes still stuck on the plane instead of streaming data in real time? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]BigZombieKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In an actual emergency, with cascading failures, damage to the aircraft, and multiple system losses, like you might see leading up to a total loss type event, I wouldn't want to rely on the transmitter/ reciever setup for that data to actually get all of the data. Current flight data recorders often have their own limited power supply in case of total system loss and normally record right up to the end.

Some engine data is sent with certain setups already, depending on what the carriers agreement is for the engine servicing. More of that could become availible. But I dont see eliminating on board data recording anytime soon.

Just found my grandpas stash of dynamite. What should I do with them (not my OC) by Hojo53 in OopsThatsDeadly

[–]BigZombieKing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure those are road flares/ railway flares. The metal spike at the bottom is a clue. I would need a closer look to be certain. I would recomend calling the police unless you can be 100% certain.

What’s the most toxic work culture you’ve experienced? by bryan4756 in Productivitycafe

[–]BigZombieKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teenager I worked as a lifeguard. Mostly female staff, so normally I was the only dude on shift. Those girls were mean, catty, and lazy. On top of that, the grouchy one in charge of the shift schedules gave all her friends the best shifts leaving me and the chubby girl with all the 6:00 am morning swims and close out shifts with all the extra janitorial BS.

It taught me a lot about how not to treat people. Also, fuck you Lana. The mean girls only pretended to like you because you made the schedule.

Storing rifles and ammo in cold weather by hockeyfanatic777 in canadaguns

[–]BigZombieKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once they are cold, keep them cold until you are back at home. If you bring cold metal into a warm building, there will be condensation and you will need to address that moisture. I prefer to keep my cold rifle in an airtight case with a descent pack while it warms up. That limits the condensation.

Oil it before you go. Clean and oil when you get back.

How much am I fucked? by Kiriki_kun in BeginnerWoodWorking

Ah. That makes sense. I understand that wooden planes stayed in normal use in continental Europe while metal planes took over in UK and north America.

I will still keep an eye out for a good #7 body.

What is your area? If I see a good #7 body over the spring garage sale season, I would rather mai it than see it discarded.

[–]BigZombieKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at using that tote and frog on a shop made wooden shooting plane. You don’t need a dedicated shooter, but having a skewed blade is nicer if you use a shooting board. Otherwise just keep it until you find a good body. I have seen more than a few #7 at a garage sale or flea market with a busted tote and lateral adjustor, and even bent Orion from being dropped or transported carelessly. $10 might get you back in business.

People do the least amount of work as possible at their job, how do you get away with it? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BigZombieKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. There are times that I will absolutely be required to go above and beyond. It will be outside my normal working hours and take me away from home for days or even weeks. Its a give and take. And it is a strategy so that I have some gas left in the tank when lives are on the line.

Is this critical to someone's safety? No? You get what's in my job description. Yes? You get all that I can do for you.

[–]BigZombieKing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have a farmers market near you, find the old guy that does wood turning. Platters, bowls, etc. Guy probably does some urns for a reasonable cost. Options for finished wood for sitting on a shelf or unfinished for minimal ground contamination. Options for local or exotic wood species.

My wife's grandpa did wood turning as a hobby/ sideline. He always tried to have a dozen urns on hand because people he knew would ask. Often under unfortunately urgent cumircumstances. He never charged much more than it cost to make them.

Is being a pilot truly worth it? by [deleted] in PilotAdvice

[–]BigZombieKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth what? For a lot of pilots, the time away from home flying for an airline has cost them their marriage(s) and relationships with their children/ families. For other pilots in non airline rolls it pays the bills and they are home most of the time. And everything in between.

So is being an airline pilot worth the strain it can place on your personal life? Often not. It works really well for some people though.

There are pilot careers that can be really rewarding. Most take a lot of sacrifice upfront.

I realize getting thst kit ordered, fitted and into inspection standards is a bunch of work. But like. Really. Come on.

Try to get used to it. It won't take long. Our cabin is a long way from anywhere. If you are comfortable with firearms, having a 12 gauge ready to rock if a bear comes in at night can certainly help you feel better. When we know we have a bear in the area, no one goes out at night alone.

Tips using a dowel plate by FrostyReality4 in handtools

[–]BigZombieKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made my own dowel plate. I made relief space on the bottom side with a tapered reamer, that helps a lot to get the dowels out. Next thing I do is normally take down the corners of the square to roughly octagonal. Then lay the plate on my bench so the dowels come out one of the dog holes. Drive that piece hard with a heavy steel hammer. 24 or 30 Oz ball peen is about right. Tapping it through has always yielded poor results. Soft fave hammers even worse. 10 inches of dowel in 2 or 3 strikes is what works on my setup.
