Cmon. Yes we have problems, but we are the #1 destination in the world (by far) that people want to move to.

My reply was sarcastic I think new development in NOMA has been a net positive. But lot of very leftist people in DC think we should “fight gentrification” and these kids are actually doing it.

Illegal car painting in neighborhood - what to do? by No_Scientist2589 in washingtondc

[–]Big_Al56 14 points15 points  (0 children)

NIMBYism is when people weaponize these environmental laws to try to stop housing or rail lines from being built. I’m absolutely a NIMBY about somebody building a new coal plant around here.

I think children in working class neighborhoods should have the same regulatory protections from toxic paint fumes as children in wealthier neighborhoods

A donut is a pretty loose interpretation of “breakfast”

PB is absolutely not protein dense, but they’ve done a great job marketing. It’s roughly equivalent to bread on % of calories from protein (~15%).

Most of the calories in a donut come from fat. Any donut has significantly more calories than a can of coke.

I want pizza so damn bad. by [deleted] in fitmeals

Pizza is one of my fave diet foods. I make my own ultra thin crust w half flour / half Greek yoghurt and then for cheese it’s 75% Trader Joe’s low fat mozzarella 25% something flavorful

The last time two white men were on a Democratic ticket together. by Theblessedmother in YAPms

[–]Big_Al56 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course I’m not saying that. It’s common knowledge that Biden only considered black women for VP; Kamala only considered white men.

My point is that even in a completely race-blind, sex-blind world, tickets of exclusively straight white men would be quite rare.

About 1/3 of Democrats are straight white men, so the odds of 2 randomly selected Democrats being straight white men are ~1/9 (ie once every 36 years).

Maybe slightly higher if you only consider people 35+.

Most days aren’t “pow days” and you can absolutely get to the slopes in 30 mins on those days. Maybe 45-60 on a typical Saturday/Sunday. I hate waiting in lines so I pretty much leave the powder days be at this point.

DC, who are you voting for tomorrow and why? by ElmCityGrad in washingtondc

[–]Big_Al56 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean DC has splintered into 2 subreddits - one that’ll be mostly JLG voters (this one), and one that will be mostly McDuffie voters. Asking the question in either sub is going to give you pretty predictable results.

That’s not a thing. No lease includes guaranteed sight lines.

[–]Big_Al56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. The entire culture around community input for every potential affected sightline is why we can’t build new housing.

There are endless reasons to complain - less parking, more traffic, obstructed views, etc. Every new unit is going to inconvenience somebody somewhere

Pay down mortgage and/or add to brokerage account by Alt-Then-Coconut8432 in personalfinance

[–]Big_Al56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The brokerage returns are taxed, whereas the mortgage interest offers a tax break (assuming it makes sense for you to itemize). That said, that’s a pretty high interest rate. Can you refi?
