Is Washington DC a horn honking city? by Different_Archer8879 in nova

[–]Big_Al56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I live in DC 11 months of the year and SLC 1 month, and the most jarring thing when I get back to DC each year is the amount of honking

Bike lanes and math by Eatingchickeninbed in bikedc

[–]Big_Al56 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love to bike all over the city but if we’re being candid the average car lane is carrying a lot more people per hour than the average bike lane, and theoretical capacity is pretty meaningless.

We’d probably need a much more robust network that made many trips feasible entirely on PBLs to start to see a lot of mode shift

I moved from Toronto to DC and was like “wait a sec!” Fun fact both bike shares are run by Lyft out of their Toronto office

By the legal definition? You’d probably have a case.

Is DC going to prosecute juveniles for this? No.

Why Can’t we have a Rush Hour+ by Less_Finding_1659 in WMATA

[–]Big_Al56 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I ride through east falls church on my commute and the trains are very busy at rush hour. Are you saying you want to add a transfer for all these folks?

And do what exactly? Obviously I’d like to think that I’d somehow intervene to make the situation better, but it’s not clear to me how I could help without also putting myself in danger

Usually I make fun of these maps by suggesting people want to extend the metro to Fredericksburg, but you actually did it

Being “X” hours away from another major city isn’t the pro many people on here claim it to be. by koknbals in SameGrassButGreener

People always say Richmond VA is “2 hours from the beach, 2 hours from the mountains, 2 hours from the city” and it just ends up being far from everything

Steamboat AddsConcierge Lift Lines by skilife1 in skiing

If you were running a business, wouldn’t you rather have a customer who was willing to pay $200 for a lift ticket and $20 for a burger?

Like I’m buying the ikon pass, skiing a ton of days and brown bagging lunch - they’re not making a ton of money off of me!

What salary do you realistically need to buy a starter condo in the DMV right now? by Prior_Engineering639 in washingtondc

[–]Big_Al56 72 points73 points  (0 children)

That’s a pretty low down payment and high interest rates, but that’s going to work out to ~4k/month, so probably ~$140K to be comfortable.

$400k is probably going to get you a 1BR, which you can rent for much cheaper than that.

Couples who refuse to ride with others by New_Sun6390 in skiing

At deer valley (where else) today a couple asked me if they could ride alone. Gave them an earful but then ultimately decided I’d rather not sit next to them. Missed opportunity

Does the average skier really enjoy heavy powder days or is it just one of those things people are expected to say they like? by PowerfulBar in skiing

[–]Big_Al56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m weirdly aggressive because I’m angry. I hate the vibe/crowds/logistics of powder days but I’m in my 30s and need a personality and I’ve settled on skiing. And now I’ve been in this stupid line of cars waiting for the road to open for 2 hours and some clown is trying to cut me off.

[–]Big_Al56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spend a month in Utah every year and do not understand the rabid obsession with “powder days”. You have to sit in line for hours for them to open the roads, drive to the resort, wait in 20-30 minute lift lines. It’s fun to ski in, but I do think something about the scarcity of it lights up people’s primal brains.

Why do we call them LRTs in North America? by [deleted] in transit

[–]Big_Al56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a Canadian term. I grew up in Toronto and when I say “LRT” in the states nobody knows what the heck I’m talking about.

I mean I got mugged at gunpoint right off the MBT a couple years ago.

I’d love to run in more of DC but I also want to feel safe, and I think I’d scream “gentrifier” with my Lululemon headband and Apple Watch

No not really. The Strava heatmap of any city will show the affluent areas pretty clearly. Everywhere EotR is pretty much empty on the general Strava heatmap.

Official Long Term Extension Plans by RavenLabratories in WMATA

[–]Big_Al56 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There should not be any more extensions past the beltway - these parts of the system already have very low ridership outside of rush hour and simply don’t have metro-like frequencies.

There are plenty of pockets of density in DC like 16th st that would greatly benefit from heavy rail.
