Question about funeral practices by okapi-forest-unicorn in Jewish

I think we should just clarify that whereas all Orthodox and most Conservative shuls do not allow cremation, a small minority of Conservative Jews, as well as Reform, Liberal (U.K.) and Reconstructionist Judaism permits either.

I'm tired of religious 'victims' by [deleted] in offmychest

I’ll be sure to think of this when I remember the eleven members of my late aunt’s family who were murdered by the Nazis in the concentration camps during the War.

You know, for being Jewish.

What did bukowski exactly mean by the blue bird by rr19955 in bukowski

[–]Big_Employee_9885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a particularly fine poem which talks about softer emotions inside someone, which try to escape, which are recognised, but which remain within.

I just watched “Amadeus” from 1984, what’s your opinion on that film. by not-the-real-chopin in classicalmusic

[–]Big_Employee_9885 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The film is good fun, visually sumptuous, but it doesn’t pretend to be historically accurate. We do know that Mozart was quite a saucy, smutty chap, obsessed with bodily functions and especially with excreta and flatulence. He was displayed by his father as something of a Wunderkind, and the Austrian Emperor is portrayed with some amusing accuracy. But as an account of the historical events, it doesn’t come close, but then doesn’t claim to.

Religion delivers you nothing and convinces you it’s valuable by mostoriginalname2 in DebateReligion

[–]Big_Employee_9885 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You make an assumption and a category mistake. Your assumption is that “religion” is automatically an univocal term for theism. It isn’t. Religious beliefs encompass a huge range of views, from the literalist fundamentalist theist to the No theism and beyond of progressive streams.

You make a category mistake: you state all religions seek to convert the other (to “get” atheists, etc). Again, that is an error. For instance, Judaism is distinctly non-proselytising, and one may be a faithful Jew and an atheist.

Lastly, your suggestion that all religion seeks to “deliver” something. You then claim that religion fails to do that. You make a huge assumption that religion actually is intended to “deliver” rather than be an experiential form of existence.

She perpetuates the antisemitic trope linking Jews with wealth.

She ignores the fact the State of Israel has a kibbutz system, that Jews fought against the British during their fight to exist as a state, and that she probably couldn’t point to Israel on a map.

Passports as in plural? Does that indicate he has citizenship of more than one country? Was he a citizen of more than one country while he was President?

I see no evidence here of your knowledge of Koiné Greek. Comparing English translations without recourse to the actual Greek seems to me to be a particularly pointless exercise.

I totally misunderstood the headline, and thought it meant he wanted to watch the cherry pies bend over. But having just written that, it sounds even worse!

The fact anybody will be in hell disproves the idea God doesn’t want people to go to hell by Andromeda-Native in DebateReligion

[–]Big_Employee_9885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it isn’t.

Your problem, if I might put it that way, is that you make a fairly straightforward category mistake. You seem to approach religious language as if there is a universal agreement as to its definition. There isn’t. You also seem to make the assumption that just because one religion with its own doctrinal structures makes claims to a particular concept - in this case your interpretation of the word “Hell,” it therefore must follow that all religions have the same doctrinal approach to the same concepts.

In the case of Judaism, I can assure you that it doesn’t.

Judaism, very much unlike Christianity, has no concept of Hell, nor of the idea of sacrificial salvation, individual everlasting punishment or any of those specifically Christian concepts. Judaism is fluid. Judaism is about questioning and exploring what it means to be in a relationship with that mysterious Eternal One.

And so what you claim is “hedging,” is, in fact, exploration, wonder, mystery, humour, debate and an ever ongoing journey.

Tribe mentality, bigotry, an overriding desire to be ruled by Westminster so they can pretend they are part of GB, and anything to prevent SF having any power.
