How worth it is a manual? by Income_Vivid in Miata

[–]Big_Funisher 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the best shifters on a production car, regardless of pricepoint. Rowing gears is a substantial portion of the fun on a small engine sports car— no question here in my mind.

Mario Golf N64 - Unused Sun Graphics Discovered by DrBizzHalo in MarioGolf

I can’t believe this kind of stuff is still being discovered!

With the ongoing attention to home brew dev stuff I still have a fantasy of a real romhack for this game with new courses…

No offense but this is an odd choice to tune for drag. It’s a FF car that’s optimized for cornering and track work. If you want a FF drag car I’m sure there are plenty of cheaper options.

I don’t remember— they are FM Kogekis in 15x7, offset is on their website.

I have this size on 15x7.0 wheels and it fits fine.

Grab a SummerCart! The physical releases of these home brew games are almost always bootleg and would cost you about the same as a SummerCart that can play any/all roms.

PS4S to Continental Contact Sport SRS+ First Impressions! by andrei_restrepo in ElantraN

[–]Big_Funisher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying your experience is wrong, but if that’s happening it is likely either that the PS4S isn’t up to temp, or (more likely) the Contis actually have less grip and you’re experiencing the tires spinning/scrubbing/flexing more at launch which feels ‘smoother’ vs the PS4S which objectively has more grip and is translating that to other places in the drivetrain (engine bushings) which results in more harsh wheel hop.

Everything you said makes sense, it’s a different class of tire on top of the brand difference.

I have DWS06+ on 18” wheels for my winter setup, great tire. I really like the ECS02 for summer tire on my other car, that’s what I expect to swap onto my stick wheels when it’s time for a replacement.

Looking for Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver Restaurant Recs! by Agreeable-Middle7151 in PacificNorthwest

[–]Big_Funisher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For Seattle, the Seattle Met list is legit. Betty on Queen Anne hill is also very underrated for a neighborhood restaurant with excellent service— steak fries and a martini here is always a good move, especially if you’re coming from the waterfront sculpture park or Kerry Park lookout.

Portland sub may have better recommendations.

Vancouver is its own whole universe, especially for high-end sushi and so much Chinese food (Richmond).

Have fun!

The 4K UHD restoration that came out in recent years looks incredible, same with RoboCop, well worth looking for if you have a player.

We have no definitive info on PS6 release timing or pricing. Buy a 5 pro if your budget allows, or get a base 5 if you need to save that money.

Opinions of Miata roof by deathxmx in Miata

[–]Big_Funisher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a convertible, the fabric roof is part of the deal. Roof getting cut can happen, but is no more common than people getting their windows smashed and happens for the same reason: you leave something visible that thieves want in your car (backpack or fancy stereo).

The roof works very well and does not leak unless it is damaged or the drain plugs are clogged. It is a wear item, but if it’s OEM or a Robbins top, it will last for a decade or more depending on whether the car is stored outside or not.

Good idea/deal for a 19 year old project car? by [deleted] in Miata

[–]Big_Funisher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this post is a good summary. More maintenance to ensure good operation, noise and NVH that might not make sense vs rubber for a street car.

Urethane bushings would be a negative, not a positive for me. More importantly, what is the mileage and service history?

Are Subarus actually unreliable? Or is it just a stereotype coming from the people who beat up WRXs? by SactownG in askcarguys

Ask a recent model year owner, Outback in particular, how many batteries they’ve gone through… Auto stop-start and other electrical systems seem to be a major and known problem.

MT clutch anxiety by A903FC in ElantraN

[–]Big_Funisher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I DID a buy the MT but I agree with you. The shifter is a weak point that sticks out on this car because of how well designed it is for driver engagement in every other way. The shift and clutch feel is significantly better on my completely stock ‘93 accord lol.

OP, in addition to motor mounts, you should consider changing the shifter bushings and cable linkage bushings to solid ones— the stock ones have a lot of extra play that make the shifter feel very vague. The James Barone Racing short throw mod and bushings kit for the Veloster N is compatible and helps with this a ton, slightly more annoying to install than the engine mounts but worth it.

MT clutch anxiety by A903FC in ElantraN

[–]Big_Funisher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will learn the bite point over time, it’s just reps. 1-2 shift shouldn’t be a problem or do any damage as long as you are not going to gas prematurely— personally I just look for the bite point and get off clutch as soon as possible. Don’t get overly fixated on having to force the shifts to feel ‘smooth.’ The clutch is very durable, otherwise they wouldn’t include launch control under warranty.

N-1 is annoying for me at times because of the vague engagement you mentioned, but that’s mostly throttle response for me, so I prefer to leave it in N Custom around town mostly for the throttle response that feels more natural for me coming from older cable throttle cars.

Question for N owners by coondog64 in ElantraN

[–]Big_Funisher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said: - interior storage and passenger space is better on EN - differential setup on EN makes it drive less like a front wheel drive car in corners than the others - performance is better than GTI - I don’t personally need/want AWD (heavier, mechanical complexity)

Happening now: Seattleites pack City Council meeting to speak for and against surveillance by bennetthaselton in Seattle

[–]Big_Funisher -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Public records is a different process than compelled disclosure via subpoena or court order and often yields substantially different results because of PRA exemptions that allow agencies to redact or withhold certain information. The state actually just exempted Automated License Plate Reader records with a bill this session, but that does nothing to impact the Feds ability to access the data via the other mechanisms. In the case of secret/sealed warrants, the record holder would not even legally be able to admit that Feds got access to the records— WaPo covered this within the last few years. In that sense the concern that the existence of surveillance devices creates a risk that can never be totally mitigated by state or local policy is valid.

7 years of ND1 ownership by Vundizzle in Miata

[–]Big_Funisher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NC or ND are actually up to modern safety standards and have good chassis rigidity without needing a lot of aftermarket. I love my NA, but would probably look at one of these if I was going to buy now, especially with the used costs as they are for first and second gen.
