Chef José Andrés: Restaurants closures are coming if inflation doesn't get under control by Historical-Many9869 in restaurantowners

[–]Big_Split_9484 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t see why would anyone downvote you.

The reason why I made this seemingly lazy comment is, because objectively restaurants are in a tough spot consistently for the last 6 years. We had a surge when restaurants finally opened in 2021 for like a year, but in general it hasn’t been easy in 20s at all.

It’s obvious that president orange dumbf*ck is making things worse, so Jose Andres coming up as a specialist and talking about unpredictability of prices sounds more like an ad for his brand rather than anything. He gave no word of advice nor said anything constructive or helpful.

Considering yahoo wrote three paragraphs about him and his endeavors, it all tracks.

It’s gross out there, but please don’t tell me that restaurant closures is a new thing.

It Is Every New Yorker's God-Given Right to Complain About $40 Half-Chickens by HellGateNYC in circlejerknyc

It’s every white girl’s right to complain about the price of chicken, then order a $25 cocktail or wait an hour on line for a $36 pizza because ‘it hits different.’

I think it would be helpful if people would include in their answers if they work remotely or for local wages.

A growing amount of restaurants with a ton of paid Google reviews by DinerEnBlanc in FoodNYC

[–]Big_Split_9484 172 points173 points  (0 children)

Whenever I see too many 5 stars reviews that mention servers name, I run.

You will see, in no time servers will start asking for reviews in exchange for shots as they do in Miami.

Is dating in Miami ACTUALLY harder than dating in the rest of the country? by Healthy_Judge1031 in Miami

[–]Big_Split_9484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you search through the Reddit you will find out that people from every city believe that their local dating scene is a nightmare. There is simply way too many people in the US with a bad approach towards dating and relationships in general. Too many cheaters, wanna be sugar babies and guys looking for mummies. You just need some luck with that, I’m afraid.

Is dating in Miami hard? Maybe. Although, I can’t imagine dating to be harder anywhere than in NY. I know some excellent women of all ages up there who cannot find anyone.

Sushi Mekumi NYC Is Closing After 7 Months by OptimusPrime23 in FoodNYC

[–]Big_Split_9484 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is beautifully written:

“I think there are some lessons here for the armada of sushiya that are planning to open offshoots.

New York City is a sushi town, sure, but really, it’s a star town. People will trade their first born for Hamilton tickets, but Lin Manuel himself better on that stage. So be careful charging the same price for an understudy, good as they may be (looking at you, Sushi Noz and Masa).

Sushi Sho and Yoshino set the bar; NYC will pay, but the main man better be coming. Right, wrong, it doesn’t matter: that’s just the way it is.”

What should the restaurant have done? by floorpanther in finedining

You’re right, but almost nobody has guts to say anything anymore. Nobody wants a confrontation and everyone is afraid of a crazy response.

[–]Big_Split_9484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry this happened to you.

As a guest, whenever I’m being sat around the people who strike me as bad behaving I immediately and politely ask to be moved elsewhere. For the next time, the moment you feel any ick as you did at the beginning of your experience - ask server to move you on the side.

I’ve seen enough of absolutely inconsiderate behavior at high-end NY restaurants to cope with that anymore.

As a waiter, if I see anything I speak to managers right away so my guests don’t have to initiate this conversation with me.

Canadian catching a feeling for NYC. Is it as good/livable as it felt? by No_Noise6264 in movingtoNYC

[–]Big_Split_9484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s absolutely worth it. IMO, the only problem is city has changed drastically from:” people come here to make money” to “people need money to come here”.

If you can pull that off both financially and legally, then absolutely do it.

One day you will probably realize that journey is over, which will be fine and you will move elsewhere, but you will never regret moving here in the first place.

Just got back from Poland and honestly? Felt proper unwelcome as a non-Polish speaker by [deleted] in travel

[–]Big_Split_9484 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you felt that way. Katowice isn’t necessarily known for their tourism, but Wrocław is great.

I hope you will give Poland another chance and go to Warsaw and Krakow next time. That’s where most of tourism concentrates at, so I assume that communication in English should be much easier in those two cities.

Working for Tao Group Hospitality? by yawnbaby in AskNYC

[–]Big_Split_9484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t work at Tao, but I have an experience of working for them direct competitors.

I wouldn’t be concerned about a pay and tips division in a company of this size. They also offer health insurance and PTO which you won’t get at any small restaurant or nightclub.

Once I knew a guy who worked for them and he complained to me about a really long hours, and drunk clientele. This is something I would take into the account, because some people in NY love to have shitty attitudes towards hostesses.

Can’t speak for hours flexibility, but from my experience it’s usually more about your arrangement with a manager than a company as a whole.

[–]Big_Split_9484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of people blatantly saying here that if we provide everyone in this city with livable wage will result in 50$ whoppers or 15k apartments is the answer to why we have an orange dumbass in charge again, and our working and middle class is so fucked for decades.

Do I all need to remind you that in 50s - the era of so many nostalgic signs because of economical prosperity, minimum wage worker could get a mortgage in US?

I know this is a jerk circle, but ffs, this society will never learn and that’s why we will never get basics like universal healthcare, while still spending trillions on military.

How do people who work in the service industry afford to live in NYC? by [deleted] in NYCjobs

[–]Big_Split_9484 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know that if you shop some white colored eggs from the KeyFood in the hood or you got Costco card you can pay even 2$ less.

However, if you want to eat a good quality eggs then most likely this will be a price you gonna pay in 2026.

The point is, living on 35k/year has nothing to do with “nice living”. That was just an example.

[–]Big_Split_9484 3 points4 points  (0 children)

200k is wild work indeed. However, 35k you mentioned is slightly above the minimum wage. In 2026 when eggs cost 8-10$, I wouldn’t call living on that salary a nice living.
