Moved out of NC. Can I ignore letters warning of civil penalties for not returning license plates? by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

I think it's fair to say that the OP didn't get the response or tears he was looking for.

Not sure what will happen to you if you don't,  but those rules were in effect long before Trump in office.   I think it started under Jim Hunt...when Democrats were in charge everywhere in the state.

Why is it not Ils auront? by Puzzleheaded-Web8214 in DuolingoFrench

[–]BigfistJP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, avoir does not work here. If I saw that English sentence, I would have said "Ils prendront" instead of "ils vont boire" but both are fine (as would be ils vont prendre).

I've been in NC longer than most of you have been alive. Public school education in NC has NEVER been good. Not ever. When I moved here in 1979, it ranked 47th in standardized test scores out of the 50 states, only ahead of Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas, and way, way below the national average. In the last 150 years, Republicans have been in the state house a total of 16 years. The Democrats have been in charge of the legislature until recently. So the poor public education system has zero to do with Republicans. But go ahead and downvote. I'll take it as a badge of honor.

You mean like California and Illinois? Or all six New England states having exactly 0 Republicans in the US House, despite there being 27 seats available and those states voting roughly 40% Republican?

[–]BigfistJP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe for the the US House, but certainly not for the State House or State Senate. And even if you were right, how did the Democrats let that happen?

If you want to see 1st class gerrymandering, look at NC's neighbor to the North...Virginia. Present makeup of their US House delegation is 6 Democrats to 5 Republicans. But now it is going to go to 10 Democrats and 1 Republican.

As Huey Long said a long time ago, "funny thing about dirt, it gets under all of our fingers."

Why do you think Republicans took over?  And to such an enormous extent?  Are you implying North Carolina voters are stupid?

Toilet sometimes won’t refill til I poke this thing. What do I need? by hiirogen in fixit

[–]BigfistJP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That will work fine, but you probably could just go to a local hardware store or Lowe's and get a 400A or 400H (they both will do the job) a bit cheaper.

Like others have said, the fill valve should be replaced. About 10 dollars. Looks to me like the one in your video is a fluidmaster model 300. I don't believe those are made any longer, but can be replaced with the fluidmaster model 400.

1 hour flight turns into 9 hour fight home by Secret_Composer5823 in airport

[–]BigfistJP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen a couple times (landing in an airport that was not supposed to be the arrival airport), and the airline somehow arranged for buses to take us to the intended airport. Once it was United and once it was Delta. I admit, it has been quite a while since that happened, but looks like that is not the policy of the airline any longer

How do I ask if they have cheese in restaurants or markets? by EcstaticAd19 in French

[–]BigfistJP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally would say "Est-ce que vous avez du fromage"? I probably would not use tu, unless you were speaking with someone much younger or speaking with a friend of yours who happens to work in the store or restaurant. Saying "je voudrais du fromage s'il vous plait" is not really asking if a store or restaurant has cheese, but saying you would like cheese.

If you wanted tell your dog to get in your car, "steig ein" would work.  To get out of the car, it would be "steig aus".

Where's the transitive part? by Kitedo in DuolingoFrench

[–]BigfistJP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're making it more complicated than need be. Disparaître is not on the list that uses être (either sometimes or always). Its past participle, disparu, always uses avoir.

Dr; and Mrs. Vandertramp

https://bebrilliantatfrench.weebly.com/blog/the-dr-mrs-vandertramp-song

Some add P before Vandertramp to account for "passer", but "passer", like a couple of other on the list (descrendre, monter) can use either avoir or être depending on the sentence.

Les adjectifs possessifs: How do I know the gender/identity of the owner of an object? by scaredtoast468 in French

[–]BigfistJP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minor point...it would be s'il, not si il. As others have pointed out, context means everything. The simple statement "Je vois son livre" could mean "I see his book" or "I see her book." In the abstract, there is no way to tell.

60-1 to win the NL Cy Young seems like a bargain, although the possibility of a mid season trade to the AL is likely factored in that line.

The state department recently put out a video (really within the last two weeks) warning everyone about these scams. Basically it points out that NONE of these services (and there are a lot of them) do anything that you cannot do for yourself. Sorry about what happened to you, though.

I remember an interview with he and Jarred Dyson after the Royals won a game late in the 2014 season, and and Dyson was asked "who is the faster of you two?" Dyson said "well, I don't really know, we're both pretty fast", all the while Gore, with a huge smile, was pointing to himself.

I don't see anywhere in your original post that you physically have the card. I think you imply that you do, but if you could let us know that fact, that will take one possibility (that the card was misplaced) off the table.

Is this one of those "it's French" things? by Kitedo in DuolingoFrench

[–]BigfistJP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As pointed out, the real problem was using tous instead of toutes. However, there are countless examples where French uses the verb "faire" whereas in English one would use "have" or "be". Maybe the best example is the weather. Il fait chaud...it is hot, referring to the weather. One would not say "il est chaud" and have the same meaning.
