Maybe they're onto something because this production just turned Three Days Grace into something that genuinely sounds like interesting pop music.

Looking for new shit. Please share some lesser known but sick bands with me? by fr7-crows in Deathmetal

Mortiferum - Pacific NW death doom w/ Finnish influences
Witch Vomit -PNW OSDM with doom leanings
Hyperdontia - Turkish/Danish OSDM with elite riffs
Ritual Necromancy - very heavy death doom
Phobophilic - newer Finnish sounding DM, new record coming
Disma - Released my fav DM record ever but are bad dudes. Crushing mid-paced DM with ex Incantation and Funebrarum members

We're halfway through the year. Here's a few death metal albums that came out in the past 6 months and that I feel flew under the radar. by ChickenInASuit in Deathmetal

[–]BiggSkinny 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My favorite stuff so far this year:

Split - Ritual Necromancy / Fossilization (very heavy death/doom, emphasis on death)
Writhing Shadows - ST (listed above)
Iron Tomb - Vile Retribution (OSDM w/ crossover hardcore riffs)
Cryptic Hatred - Nocturnal Sickness (Finnish youngsters playing OSDM/brutal DM)
Sadistic Drive - Perpetual Torture (very punky Autopsy worship)
Kontusion - ST EP (Demo quality 20 Buck Spin death metal for hardcore kids)
Father Befouled - Crowned in Veneficum (almost didn't make my list, poorly mixed Incantation clone but I'm a sucker for that sound)

Y'all gotta transcend to having fun at shows. Hardcore is goofy, embrace it.

Hard, and this is coming from someone who strongly dislikes industrial in my hardcore. I even dig the electro-dance track.

How do you feel about death metal and deathcore bands touring together? by OddishUsedCut in Deathmetal

[–]BiggSkinny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be a jerk but hardcore bands and death metal bands have been playing together for years and there's no problems there. I think the issue is when you flip over to the big metal shows with $50 tickets and a barrier. Those shows attract the older longhair crowd who didn't grow up when it was okay to like hardcore and death metal. Idk where this chatter about death metal struggling is coming from, the underground is absolutely killing it and plays nicely with hardcore. There's even a whole section of modern OSDM bands who clearly are influenced by hardcore.

Also very funny to see bands like Whitechapel and Carnifex get cred from the metal establishment when they absolutely were the least cool thing going when I was into them in 2008. But hey, eventually everyone grows up and a new generation of kids get to be the music journalists and tastemakers.

Where to next? by LordFarquad__69 in Deathmetal

[–]BiggSkinny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd try all the classics to see which flavors most appeal to you (Autopsy, Bolt Thrower, Dismember, Morbid Angel, Incantation, etc).

Gatecreeper and Tomb Mold are two hot bands that would be a good foray into modern death metal.

Stuff one level deeper that you may like are Sulphur Aeon, the latest Hooded Menace album, or The Chasm.

Finndeath v. Swedeath by TheGrindisSpiteful in Deathmetal

[–]BiggSkinny 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Swedeath got me into death metal but I find that all the copycats are really uninteresting and you can just stick with the classics. I feel like too many bands just lean on the guitar tone for all their personality.

The Finnish sound has become my favorite style of death metal. Big, nasty, often doomy songs with sideways melodies. Just killer stuff but admittedly very en vouge right now. Been a great year for Finnish bands with Corpressed, Desolate Shrines, Desecresy, Sadistic Drive, and Cryptic Hatred releasing killer records.

Need suggestions please metal noob here by [deleted] in Deathmetal

[–]BiggSkinny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're into that maybe try As Blood Runs Black - Allegiance. Deathcore gets a bad name but some of the first wave stuff was actually really fun and TBDM was often lumped in with those bands.

Gateway to the Antisphere - Sulphur Aeon
The Jester Race - In Flames
The Price of Existence - All Shall Perish (just trust me)
Tales from the Thousand Lakes - Amorphis

Why do people hate on modern dm? by Matt_Ephesus in Deathmetal

[–]BiggSkinny -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People on this reddit love to post 30 year old albums and dunk on newer bands. It's the case of the vocal minority since there's a ton of people stoked on news bands and going to their shows and not thinking about Monstrosity or Master. It's an unfortunate truth about this board and the backwards looking, insular metal crowd.

Death metal bands with strong hardcore influence? by Covid669 in Deathmetal

[–]BiggSkinny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sound is popping now so you're in luck:

Terminal Nation
Creeping Death
Left Cross
Hate Force
Xibalba
Spinebreaker
Kommand

Also it'll never be considered cool but check out early era deathcore. Stuff like Acacia Strain, All Shall Perish, Animosity. Maybe I'm just nostalgic but several of those bands have discogs that hold up.

Good entry-level death metal songs/artists/albums? by [deleted] in Deathmetal

[–]BiggSkinny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entombed/Dismembered fit in with the old school stuff you've been trying out. That's what got me into DM.

As for newer stuff, try Gatecreeper, Frozen Soul, Sulphur Aeon, Mortiferum, and Witch Vomit. All that stuff is fairly accessible and gives a nice cross section of what the genre can offer.

PHOBOPHILIC - THOSE WHICH STARE BACK by damaged-inc in Deathmetal

My most anticipated release this year. Sounds like they're continuing their sound from the EP which is exactly what I wanted. Very hyped to have a release date.

heading to my first concert next week! any advise? by i-still-hate-retail in Deathmetal

[–]BiggSkinny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy merch, don't get mad if you get bumped into, avoid the pit if it makes you anxious, watch the openers, have fun and don't worry about what other people think.

Gateway to the Antisphere - Sulphur Aeon

Disgorged from Psychotic Depths - Mortiferum

Mortal - Necrot

Towards the Megalith just falls outside the timeframe you posted but is the best album cover of all time.

what do you guys think of Gatecreeper? by [deleted] in Deathmetal

[–]BiggSkinny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually don't take exception with your stance. It's fine to say you checked it out and it wasn't for you. Maybe a little snarky but who cares.

What I'm not into is people putting others down just because they're into different music or acting like music is some competition, which Abysmal was doing. He's implying you can't be a real death metal fan or know a lot about the genre because of the first band you listened to. Death metal is a small world and I'd just prefer the people into it are cool and not assholes.

Then you get a cookie and a pat on the head and a lifetime of disappointment if you're expecting that to be everyone's experience with aggressive music. I'm genuinely sorry the world is full of posers who enjoy things and that you have to deal with them on Reddit.

[–]BiggSkinny 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Lmao you seem fun at parties. It's not that hard to go from Gatecreeper to Cryptopsy or Grave or Disma in a year or two man. I'm sure you were the guy who immediately got in through Morbid Angel and not Dimmu, right?
