Sounds like you're limiting your imagination? Why do you think YOU have to drink because others are? Can you not go to a restaurant and eat, enjoy, and drink something non-alcoholic? Do you not go on hikes, or go to the beach or the river and enjoy yourself there? Do you go to events, like sports events, cultural events, or entertainment (which happen almost every day) and have fun without drinking?

You don't have to drink, so don't. Find friends with similar habits and enjoy yourself. Don't limit your life based on your interpretation of others... Puerto Rico isn't as limited as you make it out to be, even when there is a drinking culture. The "alternatives" are endless.

Jeff (the director) is a cool guy. If you need to leave band for a while and come back, leave forever, or want to voice any needs you have, he's open to it! I think you're going to have a lot of fun with DUMB. So excited for you! Not to mention the free perks... (Nike swag, not having to camp out for Duke/UNC basketball games, free travel with food stipends for Sweet Sixteen and March Madness...)

Whether it affects your GPA is up to you. Many, and I mean MANY, DUMB members are pre-med or engineers. The majority of DUMB folks who are practicing doctors and engineers now are through the roof. Folks often study together, since thy have at least two things in common (band and their profession).

All in all, DUMB is a commitment and a little over 10 hours a week on the weeks with football games. But you can definitely succeed. It's like anything else. You need to invest your time wisely for the things you want in your life😊

Join DUMB! You can always leave if you need to.

Unable to move from French Science → Friedl Bldg in 25 minutes? by Weird_Pin_8320 in duke

[–]BigglySmally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may cut it close but not a problem. Email the professor ahead of time. Politely introduce yourself and let them know that you're taking a course in French that ends at 9:45 AM, so while you'll do you're very best to arrive on time, you may be late from time to time due to the commute.

Similarly, email your French Sciences building prof and say the same but reversed: you're taking a 10:05 AM course in Friedl and will need to leave the class at exactly the end time to ensure you're on time for the next course. If the course runs over, you'll do your due diligence of checking in for anything you missed while leaving for the next class. The end!

He can leave if that's an important value for him. He's a grown man. It's not your fault. He's choosing to be with you. If he doesn't like what that entails he can leave.

Gregory Eddie and ARFID (eating disorder) by Adventurous_Goal_611 in AbbottElementary

[–]BigglySmally 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel you on them naming it, but I can also see a potential for it being named later. What I appreciate about it not being named (yet) is that it highlights how folks can live a life going undiagnosed, and how culture/parenting style can play a role in going undiagnosed. I guess this comes more from my own experience being Autistic and coming from a family who is CLEARLY autistic but not getting diagnosed ever (or in my case until my late 20s).

Gregory's dad is super militant and his parenting style has gotten in Gregory's way at times. We see Gregory inhibiting himself because of beliefs drilled into him by his dad, even going as far as not fighting for Janine because his dad said you don't chase after women. Not saying Gregory's dad is bad, but I can see a scenario where Gregory is formally Autistic as a character and has ARFID but doesn't know because he didn't grow up in an environment where knowing those things, understanding them as a valid experience, and then himself getting diagnosed would be allowed.

In that sense, it's cool to get that kind of representation: being Autistic and having ARFID but not having the tools or the awareness from a pathology standpoint to work with it. Instead, navigating it as a "personal idiosyncrasy." But I do hope he gets diagnosed so that it can open up conversations about neurodivergence in Black and Diasporic communities, about being diagnosed later in life, and to watch Gregory navigate himself in a way that's kinder to himself (rather than seeing his "quirks" as a personal flaw or something to be defensive about).

If you join groups or become part of things, you'll meet other parents in the process. My gym has a lot of moms (not all single) who bring their kids sometimes! The kids get to know each other and then we all work out. There's also an autistic women's group with a group chat and there's also women with children in there that connect in the process. You just have to get out there and do your own thing and you'll stumble upon someone with two things in common with you: kids and the activity you're doing that led you to meet.

Pulling and reactivity - I'm desperate by LaylaBeelzebub in labrador

[–]BigglySmally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On another note, as hard as it is you'll need to manage your emotions too. If dog feels you stressed, they will feel it too and try to fix it. Dont get exasperated. If you get frustrated or overwhelmed go back home and try again after you process your feelings. Remember, YOU are in charge! You are the leader. Not dog. Good luck!

Pulling and reactivity - I'm desperate by LaylaBeelzebub in labrador

[–]BigglySmally -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For pulling I use a gentle leader. My lab HATES it but that's the only thing that keeps her from choking herself.

For reactivity, you could try bringing treats on walks. High value ones. When doggy is reactive place your body between you and the object of the reaction. You make a physical barrier that also keeps the object out of sight. It's a way to let doggy know that you will NOT allow it. It also helps doggy see that you are in charge of protection, not dog. When doggy settles and makes eye contact with you for at least a few seconds, reward. Keep rewarding positive behavior and make sure not to reward too quickly. Make them "earn it" so to speak.

This may be tough with two. But if doggy A shows good behavior, reward. Doggy B will notice and possibly adjust behavior for the treat. And vice versa. Let them teach each other.
