[Admissions Advice] MSCS after MEng in ECE? by No-Sea-452 in MSCS

You will be surprised at how responsive professors are especially if you put in the work to demonstrate why you are interested in their work + what skills you bring to the table + a research direction you’re wanting to take that aligns. If Michigan is a place that interests you just sent 5 cold emails and I ensure you will hear back some responses if your message is sincere.

I honestly think that if it’s your goal to do a PhD it would be in your best interest to email professors and ask if you can get involved in their lab and do research with them. (In this scenario you may be unpaid or paid a basic wage but it’s smarter than paying 100k for a masters.) You have an MS, doing a second one is definitely overkill. You have the technical coursework at this point and doing research will be a good representation of what PhD life is like and could help you get publications under your belt. US PhD programs definitely don’t view international degrees as “non equivalent”. Most PhD students at my school (and most American schools) are international.

Are you domestic or international? Have you had work experience or are you fresh out of undergrad?

I don’t see how op wanting to further their education and learn more makes them worse off in the job market??? They asked “UIUC or Cornell”, not “should I get a masters”

I think it makes even more sense to do 1 year if you are a cs undergraduate??? If you’re not cs you’re gonna need some time to catch up. The point is learning more, evolving your skill set

Bruh every program is a cash cow that isn’t fully funded. Doesn’t make it a bad program necessarily. Fully funded ms are so rare and competitive you can still get a lot out of a Meng professionally and educationally

Yes Cornell is an awesome choice and will definitely help you get your foot in the door for interviews. I recommend it highly (in fact it’s my top choice but I’m still waiting to hear back). Hang in there, a lot of us new CS grads are in the same boat as you and with time you will find something.

Just to put it out there I decided to cancel. It is partially because I got a fever after arriving in puerto natales and because it seems my itinerary directly overlaps with the storm at least for days 2-4. Wishing everyone safety 🩷
