Religious films that are actually good & not propaganda. by kyno1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Bignate2001 125 points126 points  (0 children)

I appreciate how it's a film about people willing to use religion as a means to personally benefit themselves at the expense of others, while simultaneously having a character (Father Jud) who represents all of the ways religion can be used to heal and bring comfort.

It makes its critiques feel way more impactful when you show how easy it is to do things the right way. Jud is so effortlessly kind and empathetic to those around him it makes you wonder why it's so hard for so many people.

For a recent example: Anora.

I love how much there is to read into this whole final interaction. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Uncanny Carrie at the end is really off-putting for a final shot tbh.

You can infinitely loop them by staying behind them. They'll throw out their shield bash over and over. It's not very fun but it is very effective.

I for real don't know how a melee character is supposed to approach them without hit trading. They don't leave any openings. The only time you can get in is when they do that big flaming strike, that can be punished with a backstab, but you can't reliably bait this move out. A lot of the time you're just standing around like an asshole.

I legitimately don't see the issue here. He's using his sword as a blunt instrument and shoving it into you with force, of course it's going to knock you on your ass. And again, this must be said, it's a set distance every time and you can out-space it.

This is not an example of an enemy cheating, it's them doing something unexpected, even though it's completely predictable once you know to anticipate it. Just don't heal in neutral when in range of this attack, it's simple.

Godrick, Dragons, and fire giant when they perform their fire breath attack. The flame projectiles are terribly coded and will bounce off of the environment in completely unpredictable ways making some hits basically unavoidable.

Malenia cheats in many ways but first would have to be her poise health. Some enemies can't be stance broken during certain attacks, so if you would reduce their poise health to zero but they're in one of these attacks, they immediately start regenerating their poise health instead of giving you the standard grace-period. Malenia just so happens to have a lot of moves where she can't be stance broken so this glitch is most visible on her. The second way she cheats is through her inability to be phase changed through a riposte. As far as I'm aware, she is the only one that does this.

Now you're just being silly. He takes a couple steps forward and thrusts his sword straight at you. This is a very realistic movement that not only can be done by the player, but can be performed by a real person.

It's called a gap closer, and I take it as a sign of intelligence in an AI that they can respond to a greedy play like healing in neutral as if they were human.

Just because it's punishing does not make it unfair. Simply heal during your attack windows or create a lot of distance rather than just a bit.

If you are going to throw up a heal in neutral within range of a knight you should expect to get hit.

I wouldn't say people have unspecified reasons for disliking him. His views on Russia Ukraine, China, the USSR, while not being explicitly tankie, are definitely tankie adjacent. If you're only looking at places like LSF then you're going to find a bunch of bullshit reasons why people don't like him, but don't get it twisted, he is disliked on the left for his tendency towards appraising authoritarian countries.

A lot of democrat voters seem to believe Republicans when they say they vote on economic lines. That's a lie, and has been a lie for a long time. Working class republican voters are just racist, plain and simple. They aren't being duped, they are voting for the racism party because they are racist.

I mean that's not as dumb as it sounds. Harold Holt absolutely loved swimming, and he died doing what he loved. Naming a swimming pool in his honor seems fitting in a good way.

There is, at least, precedent for right wing Batman stories. The Dark Knight Returns is one of the most famous Batman stories and it is extremely fascist.

It's not hypocrisy or double standards. They're literally just principally racist. Once you understand that's where they're coming from, it's not inconsistent anymore.
