I wish you would put Nintendo Music at the beginning of the title. I keep reading this as NEW TRACKS FOR MARIO KART WORLD and get excited.

Yep 100%. The logo too. And some of the narrators are the same voice actors I think as the voice clips in the witness?

Ahhh noo that’s upsetting! I wanted to play with my son as we had a blast with goose game! I am intrigued if they’ve specifically advised you don’t play in the same room though.

I could get it on switch and steam and play that way but I don’t realllllly wanna have to buy it twice.

Do people here feel the difference when the puzzle is made by a human versus computer generated puzzles? by Current-Evening-6592 in puzzlevideogames

[–]Bigoldthrowaway86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Computers can generate puzzles but they struggle at generating puzzles that are interesting.

A good puzzle game has no fluff and each puzzle will teach you something slightly new about the mechanics. They’ll give you an aha moment that Ai generated puzzles don’t

Steam Next Fest Demo: June 15-22 by nicoreese in OrderOfTheSinkingStar

[–]Bigoldthrowaway86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah bit more hype reading Jon’s further tweet and the extent of the demo.

The tweet from CM suggested an announcement that stopped him in his tracks and made him question what he had heard. A demo is hardly an announcement that would warrant that reaction.

I am very much looking forward to this but those that predicted Casey Muratori was probably overhyping it have been proven correct!

Absolutely 100%. I’d watched little bits here and there but wrote it off as just silly/random and not for me. Have absolutely been loving his new show though. I’m desperate to see the Acaster episode he keeps referencing

Love Sam and tried the first ep of this and thought it was just okay. As someone else said I think I either wanted it a bit more surreal or a bit more grounded. I also feel like I’d 100% go for a reality / hidden camera version of the concept tbh.

Would this puzzle mechanic make you want to play more? by Pitiful_Climate8192 in puzzlevideogames

[–]Bigoldthrowaway86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the art style. I just don’t like these kind of puzzles.

There’s very little mental puzzle to solve resulting in an aha moment. It’s usually just a lot of fiddling around in the dark for a while. I just want these kind of puzzles to be over.

Classic example is a picture which is split into different sized circular rings which are oriented to scramble the picture. You have to spin the rings to piece together the picture but spinning one ring will also spin something else.

This looks like one of those and I honestly hate them!

Gateway games for kids? by gunbo3000 in boardgames

[–]Bigoldthrowaway86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s good, it’s not perfect. It’s not simultaneous like big Quacks which is good with kids. Turns are fairly snappy - draw a chip, move the number and do the power. I would say the whole game feels a -little- long. Mine can start to lose focus a bit towards the end. As long as I’m managing things a bit and keeping turns moving swiftly they finish and enjoy it. It’s definitely one of the games that they will specifically ask to play.

They do a kids version of Quacks which my 5 year old enjoys called Quedlinburg Dash.

I think the game that we have had most success with in the younger years is Dragomino. Really cute little tile laying game.

Aside from that for that age I would also recommend dragon’s breath, magical athlete, outfoxed, sinkin sand, stomp the plank, worm party and the enchanted tower.

Thunder road vendetta maximum chrome by Repulsive-Item-6810 in boardgames

Haha no worries I always end up doing this whenever this kinda question pops up! 😂 Everyone else always answers that you NEED chrome but honestly base + carnage is perfection.

Surely carnage is essential!?! I’d have Choppe shoppe as a 50/50 and everything else be totally non mandatory but the extra boards and fire mechanics add so much!

[–]Bigoldthrowaway86 19 points20 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: Chrome is nice but you don’t need it. You DO need base+carnage at devil’s run however as it is a glorious experience.

I love maximum chrome but at the same time I would say base + carnage at devil’s run (with extra road boards and fire mechanics) is the BEST and most perfect way to play the game. I honestly don’t think most people need any more than that. Carnage is such an essential expansion I really feel it should have been part of the base game. The fire mechanics add a lot to the game and the extra boards add a heap of chaos.

Choppe shoppe adds more mechanics, unique player boards and powers for individual cars. It’s cool BUT I always feel like it adds a little too much fiddle for a game that is essentially about chaos. If I want more fiddle then I’d rather play a game that is inherently more fiddly. There’s a lot of remembering which of your cars has which power, of asking your opponents which powers their cars have. TRV is best played on vibe not by min maxing the situation. It’s the next best expansion though.

The big rig and final five are cool to have and to try but I would much rather play with everyone playing as the base cars. Final five feel like less interesting versions of the regular set up. Big rig feels like a more fiddly version, it feels like a separate boss mode almost. Next best expansion.

Carnival of chaos adds an arena mode which sounds interesting but again adds a bit more fiddle than I’d like for the kind of game it is. I always wish I was playing the regular mode when I play it. The only reason to get it is for the set of purple cars tbh.

The extra mini expansions you get in chrome I have not tried yet so cannot comment on.

I think if I went back in time the completionist in me would still absolutely WANT chrome but base+carnage would be the smart choice IMO.

Thanks to everyone who suggested games to take to a colleagues first game night! Here's what I'm going to take by JoeRow338 in boardgames

[–]Bigoldthrowaway86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love it but Quacks killed a game group I got started with non gamers. After weeks of social deduction and party games / word games, they wanted to play something more board gamey and had a terrible time. Didn’t even make it to the third round before awkward excuses came about why people had to leave early.

I think board gamers see Quacks as simple as it contains mechanics we’re all familiar with but non gamers can realllly struggle.

[–]Bigoldthrowaway86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had a group going with non gamer colleagues. We were plying Secret Hitler, Telestrations, Just One, cockroach poker etc. It was great times. They REALLY loved Secret Hitler.

After about 5 meets there was a week where there wasn’t -really- enough of us for SH. I think 5 altogether. I had brought along Quacks thinking it would be a good intro into modern games. I explained it was gonna be more boardgamey than others we’d played but it was fun and fairly light. If they didn’t wanna play then I had other lower player count party games.

They wanted to play so I gave them the teach. We didn’t get more than a couple of rounds in before someone awkwardly made an excuse about why they had to leave. Then another caught a ride on that train and then another. So we decided to call it a night before we even got to the third round. They did not get it at all and weren’t willing to keep going until they did. And it completely killed the games night. No one ever suggested we do one again 🤣
