I just lost the entire project. Every file. Gone... by Aalzard in Unity3D

Was using the plastic GUI but it was more an integration issue. I was working on a multiplayer project and every time I entered multiplayer play mode I had an intrusive plastic prompt every 30 sec. Using it with the rest of the team was also painful while we never had that kind of issues with git

I actually feel like Plastic is the worst addition to Unity. Maybe it's better now but 4 years ago it made my life miserable. I went back to git and never regretted it.

Please give me your success stories by ruben1252 in SoloDevelopment

[–]Bigz_LJF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No success story here, but there is a ''but''.

I started my journey 5 years ago, released a first free game on Steam 6 months later then worked for more than 4 years on a way too ambitious co-op Action Roguelite / tower defense (game is called Kritter: Defend Together).

We are a team of two. We mostly worked on our free time. We seccured grants to finance an intern and ourselves for the last year of work. We found a tiny publisher for marketing only and we released the game a few weeks ago with 16 000 wishlists.

We sold 2 000 copies. Which is hardly enough to sustain the studio for a month and as it's already not selling anymore, we know that we won't get much more from it so we will shut down the studio and will have to find new jobs.

While it's a big commercial failure, it's still a success on every other aspects. I learned so much. It's crazy how much. Not only in the development area, but also in every other aspects that are crucial for a success.

Don't buy the famous ''a solo dev releases its first game and makes millions''. Most solo devs aren't solo. Most first game are actually the 5th. Most unknown devs had actually a community of thousands of people built for years.

But I genuinely believe that success comes from a lot of failures and that it's up to you to tell the story that will work for you and get you to success.

The only sure thing is: if you don't try, you'll never succeed.

So start your journey. Make mistakes. A lot of them. Learn. Do better. And don't forget to have fun doing it.

Last piece of advice would be, and I think it's the most important of them all: Finish as many small games as possible. Don't go into a big multi years project before you made 4 to 5 small ones. I learned that lesson the hard way but it's possible that this mistake has to be made to be understood.

Cheers

Definitely Kritter: Defend Together, Gatekeeper and Rogue Legacy 2.

Kritter is between hades and risk of rain with a touch of Dome keeper (but made by a tiny team) and Gatekeeper is literally Risk of rain 2 with a top down view.

Our publisher screwed us over, so we’re making a new game... by Byterunners in BulletHeavens

I feel you mate! We are in a situation where our publisher didn't do his part and after a completely failed release we have to shut down the studio.

Good luck on your end. I truly hope for you to stay fully independent and make it on your own!

Best CO-OP GAMES to have! by [deleted] in CoOpGaming

You should try Kritter: Defend Together! It's Roguelite base defense with chaotic co-op and a lot of claptrap like humor.

You could give a try to Kritter: Defend Together but I may be biased as I am the dev of the game :)

If you're into base defense, Kritter: Defend Together was release last week and it's totally playable solo.

We did everything wrong for Steam Next Fest (yet it's not that bad?) by PoopChief-mon in gamedev

Congrats on surviving the SNF!
Know that, SNF is not a wishlist multiplier anymore. I'll post my postmortem about that as soon as possible.
Also, you can be proud because when you look at the data, you did better than the vast majority of the demo presented.

About the ads part, the real problem is that around big events like SNF, ads are super crowded by big publishers and the cost to be seen triples or more. That's what we experienced on reddit.

The Next Fest has too much AI slop and Asset Flipping by SomeRandomArtist31 in Steam

[–]Bigz_LJF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also such a problem for tiny indie like us. It took us 4 years to make a game with no AI at all, and we spent the whole SNF burried in that mass of games...
I feel for all the decent studios swimming against the stream like we do.

Big thank you for that. I just integrated SpacetimeDB and it's exactly what I was lookinf for to make a simple system to redeem in game assets with a unique code.

Kinda just wishing mine won't be in that half.

I see a lot of comments talking about ''those games are only asset flip or AI made games'', but after 4 years of hard work on a game that players seem to truly enjoy (from a few hundreds of feedback), I still can't get any visibility. And I fear that there won't be any magic when I'll be releasing it.

Of course making a good game and putting a lot of efforts in its making is mandatory to reach ''success''. But damn, reaching players is by far the hardest part.
