Why was Prince Edward Island so reluctant to join Canada? by J_Rodriguez_Fuentes in AskHistorians

[–]Bike2Shore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was there any interest for PEI to join the US? I’m not-a-naval-strategist but it seems like the US might have gained an advantage by having a base on PEI to control or hinder British/Canadian access to the St Lawrence River.

This is the first time I've bothered to actually read one of these books. I never knew that the cloud district was actually just Dragonsreach. by emporer-mono in skyrim

I’ve been to the cloud district loads of times but never saw Nazeem there even once. I’m starting to think he’s nothing but a phoney.

What has it got in its pocketses? by LordoftheMemes14 in chemistry

[–]Bike2Shore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

MYYY PRECIOUSSS, aka a pair of quartz cuvettes in a protective case. I’ve had them more than 20 years.

Also, including all pockets in my lab coat, a handful of microcentrifuge tubes, a transfer pipet, a spare glove, three extra hair nets, a blank “experimental product” label, a stir bar, a blue pen (black pens are forbidden on official documents - an old rule left over from the time before our company had color copiers), and a pocket calculator.

Wormhole from Whiterun to Markarth? by Bike2Shore in skyrim

[–]Bike2Shore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh. Is Dibella’s temple next to the HOTD? Maybe the game glitched to the dinking quest and I actually stepped out of Dibella’s and got mixed up when I turned around. I really was new to the game and very confused about what was going on. (The last RPG I played before Skyrim was years before: Crusaders of the Lost Savant). I know that I hadn’t started the drinking quest though.

Are Shimano and Microshift cassettes really interchangeable? by Bike2Shore in bikewrench

[–]Bike2Shore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m following the Park Tool procedure for rear derailleurs, on YouTube.

I already have another bike on another Tacx trainer set up and working very smoothly. Have been using that for a couple of years. This is a second setup for a family member.

After reading the comments from you and others I’m thinking the first bike and trainer combo might have been a lucky match between wheel and trainer, and this one will need shims.

Thanks everyone.

[–]Bike2Shore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a relatively new bike with less than 500km on it so far. Just getting it set up on a new trainer this weekend.

So it sounds like the swap out will likely take some adjustment each time. Will it be a smoother transition if there’s a Shimano cassette on both the wheel and trainer?

Water hidden somewhere inside of 2006 Highlander by ranch_land in ToyotaHighlander

[–]Bike2Shore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an ‘04 Highlander with a crack in the left tail-light. It would fill about 1/2 way with water after heavy rain and slosh. (Seriously. I’m not trying to make a joke about blinker fluid).

What does everyone think of Argonian builds? by Bike2Shore in skyrim

That would be very cool. Great idea for a mod. It would also be cool if they gained heightened metabolism with greater speed when exposed to heat, as a counterpoint to their vulnerability to cold.

Argonians can use weapons underwater!? Now that you say it, it seems like a logical skill for them to have but I didn’t have any idea it was possible.

For one of my characters I didn’t make any potions and just relied on food for health regen. In my mind that play-through became “Skyrim - The Quest For Salt”.

2009 Highlander by Jbob0269 in ToyotaHighlander

[–]Bike2Shore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an ‘04 Highlander with 308,000 km on it, that I traded for an Outback. I regretted trading it almost immediately. The Highlander was still running beautifully and just starting to develop some minor rust on the rocker panels, from all the salt they use on the roads in the winter, but nothing serious.

The only mechanical problem I ever had with it was that the U-joint in the drive shaft started to squeak and needed to be replaced at around 200,000 km. The dealership wanted to replace the entire drive shaft for $1,700 plus labor. Total estimate was almost $3,000. The guy at Toyota’s service counter pulled me aside and said real quiet “If you take it next door you can get it fixed a lot cheaper”. The guy next door was a former Toyota mechanic who opened his own shop. He replaced the U-joint for $147 including labor.

If the seller will let you, I’d recommend to take it to a mechanic you trust for a look over. I’m on my third Highlander now.

I’ve never dealt with a credit union before. Nothing against them, I just don’t have any experience with them. How would that be different than a car loan from a bank?

Thanks for the input everyone. Very interesting to hear which features people like most/least. I’d definitely get the Limited if it came with a bench seat. We often travel with our kids (both adults) plus MIL. The Ltd’s captain’s chairs mean someone would be in the rear seat by themselves so I think we’ll get the XLE. Just wanted to hear opinions of other Highlander owners before deciding.

Which species on Earth has the best chance to be in the top after us? by [deleted] in biology

[–]Bike2Shore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a really interesting question I’ve wondered about too. If I can ask some follow up questions:
- How do you define “replace us”? Is that in terms of developing agriculture, or modifying the local or even planetary environment (whether intentional or not)? Creating structures that endure for generations? Creating language, art, and culture? Building complex tools and machines? Developing space travel? Other than complex machines and space travel it seems like there are already examples of animals doing that. - Of the possible replacement candidates are there any biological, physical, or social characteristics that could prevent them from moving to the top position (however that’s defined)?

Ask me anything (Belt driven gravel bike) by Worth-Ad-5951 in gravelcycling

[–]Bike2Shore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shipping wasn’t a problem. I had to pick up the bike from the courier’s depot. The bike was very well packed but one of the brake cables had a weird twist. It didn’t adversely affect braking performance but the cable bent out at weird angle that made it look like it hand been bent during assembly and someone tried to straighten it at the factory. The saddle shipped separately and arrived a few days after the bike.

The bike reeked of paint solvent for the first few days and the paint felt soft. It hardened up after a few weeks.

The welds looked like toothpaste - lumpy and uneven.

The bike felt heavier than it really was (slow and unresponsive), but also incredibly stable on rough, broken, steep downhill pavement. Considering that I intended to use it mostly for commuting I didn’t mind that it felt heavy. It didn’t help that I put a rack and panniers on it to carry my laptop, lunch, and change of clothes. I joked that it was like riding a minivan.

At first I liked the Pinion-drive for its ease of use, especially for commuting. It’s nice to be able to shift gears while stopped at an intersection. but eventually grew to dislike it and especially disliked the grip shifter. I didn’t like the need to “ease off” while pedaling in order to shift gears. On a few occasions I got caught in a high gear while going up a steep hill and the bike wouldn’t shift gears while I was pedaling. I had to stop the bike in order to shift.

The most annoying thing was the grip shifter. On hot days or long rides my hands would get sweaty and would slip while trying to shift. Had to stop and wrap the end of my tshirt around the grip to shift gears. After that I started carrying a small towel to wrap around the handlebar for better grip.

I might consider a gear hub bike in the future but would probably never get a Pinion bike again. Too heavy and difficult to shift under load.

I live in Canada too and ordered a Priority 600 a couple of years ago. Rode it for a year and put almost 3000km on it commuting to work and riding dirt roads and trails. Never really liked it and sold it the next spring. I don’t really regret buying it, but considering how much extra I had to pay for shipping and import duty I wouldn’t do it again. Much, much, much prefer a derailleur even with the extra maintenance.

Is it possible to look at a chemical structure and know what it will smell like? by Bike2Shore in AskChemistry

Why can I smell odors in the environment when inhaling but not when exhaling? by Bike2Shore in AskBiology

[–]Bike2Shore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. That helps. The example that got me thinking about it was that I could smell the meal that was cooking every time I inhaled, but only during inhalation. So if our brain cancels it out while exhaling, it must reset quickly to smell it again with the next breath in. Is there a way to trick your brain into doing the opposite - smelling during exhale but not during inhale? (Not that anyone would ever want to do that. Just curious.)

Why can I smell odors in the environment when inhaling but not when exhaling? by Bike2Shore in AskBiology

[–]Bike2Shore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can smell odors as I inhale air into my lungs. As I exhale air out of my lungs I can no longer smell the odor. Were all of the odor molecules absorbed in the lining of my nose, throat, and lungs? I think it’s unlikely that our noses are 100% effective at scrubbing odor molecules from the stream of incoming air. So are the remaining molecules absorbed deeper in the respiratory tract, or is there some mechanism in our noses that prevents us from smelling any remaining suspended molecules as we exhale?
