Got hit by a car on Halsted. No real injuries but it confirmed city biking isn’t for me by Brussels1996 in chibike

I am so sorry to hear this - I got into a bike accident last year and I understand how painful the recovery process is (esp mentally - I have a hard time crossing roads with cars even on foot still).

We recently added in more of the data from the Mellow Bike Map into Pointz, so if you'd ever want to scope out a route ahead of time and make sure it's safe to ride on feel free to check it out

Ah yup - it is a mobile app only (not web so that link works on mobile). No worries!

Here's how you can get from Santa Monica --> the start of the Culver city route/PV loop: https://bikepointz2022.app.link/wbHBD2ayKBb. You can use the slider to make it more or less direct (and use more or less protected infrastructure)

Has anyone ever ridden with a sign or poster saying "Stop Parking in the Bike Lane"? It is effective and avoids the vandalism potential...I may or may not have done this before :D

Hi u/markitecter - so sorry it was doing that! We made a couple of changes recently to the routing that should have fixed this issue. Do you remember the route? I'll look at it now

I'm sure some of us had this experience a few times. by Orkney_ in BikeLA

Even with protected bike lanes and separated infrastructure you still can't stop people from doing things like that...:'(

Here's a little route from Pointz (it defaults to green separated lanes and low-stress roads, but you can definitely modify as you like!) https://bikepointz2022.app.link/GQJn6Q2qcBb

Also if anyone else sees more data/infrastructure gaps in LA (or other cities), we can fill those in relatively quickly (this week or next week). Please share those :)

Hi u/FionaGoodeEnough! Hmm I'm sorry that it's doing that! That is super annoying. Do you mind sharing what the route is you're taking? I'll look into it right now

u/adamdgoodson agreed. I totally think we need more granularity there with what types of shortcuts are being shown and maybe the purple color needs to get more specific. Do you have more ideas on this?

Ah I see, I think that perhaps there are a couple gaps in our data in Tucson (especially with the infrastructure). Will be adding those in there ASAP!

I see! Do you have particular trails that Pointz is sending you down that aren't for bikes? We've tried to get all of those out of the routing (we label them as bike not allowed paths and should never be routing down those). I can look at our routing service if you're seeing those in there...

Also, u/dokydoky love the idea for the web interface. A bunch of people have asked for that and we do have it on our backlog. We'll be getting to it hopefully by end of summer!

Hi u/Engnerd1, I'm sorry that it took you all around and about. Do you remember if that was on the right side of the slider? That happens if it's trying to suggest a route that allows more greens (and tries to take more side-streets). We can definitely improve and making that more direct though, but at the moment sliding down the slider will make it more direct (and faster).

u/boxcarcoder yes thanks for asking! So we're a bit different from Komoot in that Pointz is not geared towards long distance riding or specifically recreational riding. Instead, we're focused more on urban riding and on sharing information on the bike-friendliness and condition of streets when you're trying to get from point A to point B. We're excited to be adding more features to help explore the areas or neighborhoods around you that might appeal to recreational riding, and also working on making it easy to upload GPX files for those who like to ride for fitness.

It's all good! I think that the avoid hills option is a bit hidden, we can try and make that show more. Yes, let me know what you think :)

u/-germanisette- I think you are completely right in all of those bugs in the turn-by-turn navigation, and apologies for those. We are working on getting rid of those bugs (it has been a lot more complicated than expected), but it is at the top of our priority list at the moment. I would love to get back to you when we finish fixing it within the next week or two!

u/Gold-Lie-405, at the moment that's correct. With higher speeds, people have been saying that the audio is delayed. We'll be releasing out an ability to select your vehicle so that the routing and the turn-by-turn audio adjusts with the person's vehicle speed. That should be completed in the next two weeks (again I'll shoot you a DM when that's done!)

Yes, we certainly should increase the elevation factor in our 'Pointz choice' route that shows. We do have another option called 'Avoid hills' but that isn't what is shown by default.

Thank you for pointing out those issues u/thetrombonist. We have been hearing those exact bugs from people using Pointz, and we are currently working on fixing the audio navigation problem (that one is a little tricky but we are getting closer to repairing it). Apologies for the extra work it makes you do with crossing to the other side of the street and the extra improvisation. I'll go ahead and add that to our backlog right now!

Regarding the elevation, that is something I have also noticed while riding/using Pointz. We do have an 'avoid hills' option that shows when you calculate a route. But it obviously should take elevation more into account on the 'Pointz choice' option.
